DEVOTION:  2 Thessalonians 3:1-13 (ESV)

"Pray for Us"

Finally, brothers,[a] pray for us, that the word of the Lord may speed ahead and be honored,[b] as happened among you, and that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men. For not all have faith. But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one.[c] And we have confidence in the Lord about you, that you are doing and will do the things that we command. May the Lord direct your hearts to the love of God and to the steadfastness of Christ.

"Warning Against Idleness"

Now we command you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you keep away from any brother who is walking in idleness and not in accord with the tradition that you received from us. For you yourselves know how you ought to imitate us, because we were not idle when we were with you, nor did we eat anyone's bread without paying for it, but with toil and labor we worked night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you. It was not because we do not have that right, but to give you in ourselves an example to imitate. 10 For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat. 11 For we hear that some among you walk in idleness, not busy at work, but busybodies. 12 Now such persons we command and encourage in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living.[d]

13 As for you, brothers, do not grow weary in doing good.

We often have prayer requests don't we?  I get tons of people requesting me to pray for them, for their families, for any number of reasons.  What good does it do?

Paul had a prayer request of the Thessalonians.  His request was that they pray that the "Word of the Lord may speed ahead".   What a great request.

When we don't pray, we tend to slip further and further away from God and we forget how much God is in charge of us and of the whole world.

We all need to pray for our nation today.  We need to simply pray that God's will be done, first so that we remember that God is the one in charge, and secondly so that we and the rest of our nation can conform our lives more and more each day to God's Word.

Let us pray: Lord, Thy will be done in America as it is in heaven.  Give us Your mind and Your will that we may truly be Your disciples and live as You want us to live.  Amen.

DEVOTION:  Malachi 4 (ESV)

The Great Day of the Lord

"For behold, the day is coming, burning like an oven, when all the arrogant and all evildoers will be stubble. The day that is coming shall set them ablaze, says the Lord of hosts, so that it will leave them neither root nor branch. But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings. You shall go out leaping like calves from the stall. And you shall tread down the wicked, for they will be ashes under the soles of your feet, on the day when I act, says the Lord of hosts.

"Remember the law of my servant Moses, the statutes and rules[b] that I commanded him at Horeb for all Israel.

"Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes. And he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the land with a decree of utter destruction."

Depending on your political affiliation, some might think that God is talking about today, election day, in the passage above.  Believe me, it'd be great if it was, then we wouldn't have to worry about these things anymore.

No, what God, through Malachi, is talking about in the passage above is Judgment Day.  It is not a day that is going to be brought about by man.  It isn't even dependent on man's actions.  This is God's day.

When we pray, "Thy kingdom come", that's what we are praying for.  We are praying for Him to destroy all evil and re-establish his throne forever!  We are praying that he comes to judge the living and the dead.  We are praying that we will finally see him face to face and live forever with him.

I urge you to pray for our nation today as you go to the polls and elect your candidates and vote on the amendments.  Pray that those who have turned away from the Lord will turn back to him, repent, and be saved.  Pray that all Christians everywhere will be zealous for the proclamation of the Gospel and that we will do what the Lord Jesus commanded us to do, love, forgive, and make disciples.  Most of all pray, "Thy kingdom come!"

Let us pray:  Lord, Thy kingdom come in our nation, our world, in my home, my church, and my heart.  Amen.

DEVOTION:  Psalm 98 (ESV)

"Make a Joyful Noise to the Lord

98 Oh sing to the Lord a new song,
    for he has done marvelous things!
His right hand and his holy arm
    have worked salvation for him.
The Lord has made known his salvation;
    he has revealed his righteousness in the sight of the nations.
He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness
    to the house of Israel.
All the ends of the earth have seen
    the salvation of our God.

Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth;
    break forth into joyous song and sing praises!
Sing praises to the Lord with the lyre,
    with the lyre and the sound of melody!
With trumpets and the sound of the horn
    make a joyful noise before the King, the Lord!

Let the sea roar, and all that fills it;
    the world and those who dwell in it!
Let the rivers clap their hands;
    let the hills sing for joy together
before the Lord, for he comes
    to judge the earth.
He will judge the world with righteousness,
    and the peoples with equity.

As I was watching the Vikes game yesterday, I was struck by how loud it was in their new stadium.  The crowd was roaring.  It was exciting.  But then the kicker for the Lions kicked a 58 yard field goal to tie the game as time expired in regulation and the crowd went quiet.  It got loud again as overtime began, but as the Lions scored the winning touchdown it all went silent and everyone left.

When it comes to being a Christian and especially when it comes to what our life will be like after we die, that "joyful noise" will never end.  Even while we are here on the earth we can rejoice because God is in control.  Even when we are going through trials of all kinds, we can "make a joyful noise", because we know that the Lord "works all things out for the good of those who love him and are called according to his purpose."

When life's got you down, when everything seems to be going wrong, when your life is in the dumps, MAKE A JOYFUL NOISE, because CHRIST IS RISEN!  He is risen indeed!  ALLELUIA!

Let us pray:  Lord, we thank you for giving us voices to holler out Alleluia, because You are indeed risen!  ALLELUIA!  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S  QUIZ:  Here's a what do you  think question: What the man who had an epileptic son mean when he says "I do believe.  Help me overcome my unbelief."

We all have doubts because we are human and sinful from the time our mother conceived us.  On this side of heaven, we will not "perfectly believe".  This is the essence of what it means to be sinful.  We should all cry out to God with this prayer daily.

Two volunteers needed

Since Bob Ruhl has gone to heaven, that leaves some work that needs to be done that he and Sue selflessly did for quite a few years:

1. SIGN CHANGERS:  This is an ongoing thing, more during different parts of the year than others.  Most changes go through me and then I pass them on.  I'll show you how to do it.

2. GIVING TREE:  Our narthex "Giving Tree" needs to be put up the week of November 14-18.  It needs to be assembled and decorated.

DEVOTION:  Matthew 5:1-12English Standard Version (ESV)

Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him.

"The Beatitudes"

And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

"Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

"Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

"Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons[a] of God.

10 "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 "Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

What does it mean to be blessed?  Some may say the Cubs were blessed to win the World Series last night, which means to them that God gave them the ability to win and in essence made them win or at the least made it favorable for them to win.  They might even say that he sent the rain to cause the rain delay.

Still others might say that certain people are blessed more than others, that they have more stuff, are better looking, more healthy, more friends, better parents, etc.

The trouble with these ways of thinking and many like it, is that is not what God says in the Scriptures.  What he says is just the opposite.  Blessed are the poor in spirit, those who mourn, the meek, those who hunger and thirst, etc.

In essence, he is saying that "blessed are those who have the attitude of Christ."  or even better "blessed are those who are Christians."

You don't need to be the biggest and the best to be successful in God's eyes.  You need to be broken, contrite, humble, and faithful.  That is success in God's eyes.  That is what he sees when he sees a Christian.  That is what he will bless.

Let us pray:  Lord, we are blessed because we believe in you.  Keep on blessing us with faith, life, and truth.  Amen.

DEVOTION:  Revelation 7:9-17 (ESV)

"A Great Multitude from Every Nation"

After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, 10 and crying out with a loud voice, "Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!" 11 And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, 12 saying, "Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen."

13 Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, "Who are these, clothed in white robes, and from where have they come?" 14 I said to him, "Sir, you know." And he said to me, "These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation. They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

15 "Therefore they are before the throne of God,
    and serve him day and night in his temple;
    and he who sits on the throne will shelter them with his presence.
16 They shall hunger no more, neither thirst anymore;
    the sun shall not strike them,
    nor any scorching heat.
17 For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd,
    and he will guide them to springs of living water,
and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes."

Once again, as I read this, tears come to my eyes as I think of all of my loved ones who have gone on to paradise.  The most recent one is Bob Ruhl.  He too is worshiping, holding palm branches in his hand and shouting hosanna as he sees the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ himself, face to face.

You might be feeling the same way as you think about those who have gone before you into paradise.  But don't be in despair.  You will, one day, join that throng in paradise!  You are a saint on earth and will join the saints in paradise.

Think about that when you are balancing your checkbook and come out with a negative balance.  Think about that when you go to the doctor and he tells you that you have to lose weight for the hundredth time. Think about that when you're struggling to communicate in any way with your kids or grandkids.... or wife.  Think about that when you hear the screeching as shrill on TV and radio as we get ready for a seemingly winless election.

Also think about that as you come to worship and realize that you are singing and worshiping with the same saints that you will see in heaven, yet without your sin or theirs.  Think about that as you go before the throne of God and plead for mercy over your sin.  Think about that as you live in the freedom of the Gospel day by day, knowing that your sins are forgiven and your inheritance is already prepared for you.  Think about Jesus and His glory when you think about it.

A blessed day after ALL SAINTS DAY to all and as we celebrate it this weekend!

Let us pray: Lord, as we struggle day by day and as we experience your grace day by day use our daily life to remind us of the eternal life to come and those who already enjoy it.  Amen. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________
