33 They came to Capernaum. When he was in the house, he asked them, "What were you arguing about on the road?" 34 But they kept quiet because on the way they had argued about who was the greatest.
35 Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, "Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all."
36 He took a little child whom he placed among them. Taking the child in his arms, he said to them, 37 "Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me."
How important are you? Are you in charge at your job? Do people stop and listen when you start to talk? Does everyone want to know what you think all the time? Do you hold people's lives in your hands?
Or are you lowest on the totem pole? Do you think that if you left a room no one would even notice? Does it matter what you say at all? Are you in control of anything at all?
The thing is that if we base our worth and importance on what other people think of us, or on physical earthly things, it is all subjective. You may not be important at your job, but you are the most important person to your spouse. You may not be able to hire or fire anyone, but you can certainly care for someone, and when you do you will become most important o him or her.
Despite even all of that, you are of utmost importance to Jesus. You are worth his coming to earth, his life, his death, and his resurrection. Even if you were the only person on the earth to have ever lived, he would still have done it all just for you!
Stop trying to find worth in your appearance, your financial status, your ambition, your social status, or even in your abilities. Start fi9nding worth where it is truly found! Find your worth in what JESUS thinks of you!
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank you for thinking so much of me that you gave up your life for me. Help me to find my worth and purpose in you so that, whether I'm a trash man or president of the United States I am still completely loved by you. Amen.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ: Here's a "funny" question, was James, the brother of Jesus, older or younger than Jesus? Explain how you know. When Jesus was conceived in Mary, his mother, he was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and the VIRGIN Mary.
Mary hadn't had sex with anyone so there were no other kids before Jesus.
Jesus was the oldest. Imagine having him to look up to, but also have his example to have to follow. Mary would say, "Why can't you be more like your older brother, Jesus?"

13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. 14 But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. 15 Such "wisdom" does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. 16 For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.
17 But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. 18 Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.
4 What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don't they come from your desires that battle within you? 2 You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. 3 When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.
4 You adulterous people, don't you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. 5 Or do you think Scripture says without reason that he jealously longs for the spirit he has caused to dwell in us? 6 But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says:
"God opposes the proud
but shows favor to the humble."
7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.
Everything that James, the brother of Jesus, says above can be boiled down to one word, "submit". If you're not getting what you pray for it is because you haven't submitted to God's will and so you're asking for wrong things, you're asking selfishly, or you're not believing that God can do what you ask.
If you're fighting with the world, guess what, it's because you haven't submitted to him nor have you submitted to the world as a servant like God wants you to be. You want to be god. You want to be most important. You want your needs and wants to be met first.
Instead true wisdom, wisdom from the Lord, works itself out in humility and submission. True wisdom from on High shows you that you are a sinner like everyone else, that you aren't god, and that you will keep making mistakes. This will keep you from the selfish ambition that James talks about. It will also keep you from judging others as if you were higher than they are.
True wisdom will also show you that you are not in control of one bit of your life. You can't make one more breath come out of you if God doesn't will it. You can't keep yourself safe no matter what. You will not live forever no matter how hard you try. This realization should not alarm you or cause you to give up. On the contrary, it should be freeing thing for you, because it will cause you to give everything up to God so that he can direct your path. When you make decisions you do God's will, and when you don't necessarily know what God's will is in a specific situation you make the decision and then leave it up to God to do His will with it, because he promises that he will "work all things out for the good of those who love him and are called according to his purpose."
Let us pray: Lord, make me to submit to you and to others out of reverence for you that you alone may be honored, praised, and glorified in my life. Amen.

18 Because the Lord revealed their plot to me, I knew it, for at that time he showed me what they were doing. 19 I had been like a gentle lamb led to the slaughter; I did not realize that they had plotted against me, saying,
"Let us destroy the tree and its fruit;
let us cut him off from the land of the living,
that his name be remembered no more."
20 But you, Lord Almighty, who judge righteously
and test the heart and mind,
let me see your vengeance on them,
for to you I have committed my cause.
Jeremiah is in the middle of great turmoil here. His own hometown, Anathoth, and the people he knew very well are plotting against him. His own church wants to kill him. He is only preaching and proclaiming what the Lord has given him. He isn't doing anything wrong. It is a classic case of blame and kill the messenger.
Yet, Jeremiah finds strength and courage for he says, "20 But you, Lord Almighty, who judge righteously and test the heart and mind, let me see your vengeance on them, for to you I have committed my cause." He has given it all up to God. he knows that what he has been doing and saying is from god and so to back away or to do differently wouldn't help but only hurt him and his people. So he has committed his cause to the Lord.
Do you know that what you are doing is right? If it is, then commit it to the Lord. Set your course to follow him and keep on doing it despite the worldly opposition you face. If it isn't now is the time and the perfect opportunity to repent. Turn from your wrong ways and turn to the Lord. Don't keep going in the wrong direction. Turn today!
The other thing here is that Jeremiah doesn't take vengeance. He doesn't repay evil with more evil. Instead, he submits that to the Lord too. He wants vengeance. He wants the people to pay, but he knows that it is not good or right for him to be the one to do it. He's happy to let the Lord take care of that.
Don't let bitterness, rage, anger, or malice even spend one minute in your heart. Get rid of it. Forgive as you have been forgiven. Give it all up to God and he will direct you.
Let up pray: Create in me a clean heart, O God and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence, nor take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the JOY of your salvation and uphold me with Your free Spirit. Amen.

Psalm 54
For the director of music. With stringed instruments. A maskil[b] of David. When the Ziphites had gone to Saul and said, "Is not David hiding among us?"
1 Save me, O God, by your name;
vindicate me by your might.
2 Hear my prayer, O God;
listen to the words of my mouth.
3 Arrogant foes are attacking me;
ruthless people are trying to kill me—
people without regard for God.[c]
4 Surely God is my help;
the Lord is the one who sustains me.
5 Let evil recoil on those who slander me;
in your faithfulness destroy them.
6 I will sacrifice a freewill offering to you;
I will praise your name, Lord, for it is good.
7 You have delivered me from all my troubles,
and my eyes have looked in triumph on my foes.
How often do you feel as thought he whole world is against you? Does it seem as though you just can't win no matter how hard you try or what you do? You're not alone. David had the same feeling as Saul and his men, the Ziphites, kept searching for him to kill him although David had done nothing wrong. David had gained notoriety and fame for killing Goliath. After his great feat of courage and strength he was elected, by Saul mind you, to be the commander of the army. More than that, way back before he even defeated Goliath, Samuel had anointed David as king even while Saul was still king.
Now, because David had gained this power and strength, and because God was with him in everything he did, Saul became increasingly jealous and full of rage, so much so, that he sought to kill David with everything he had. David had to run and hide for his life with his men. He sought rest, but never found it. He wanted to be reconciled with Saul, but Saul wouldn't have it. Eventually, Saul would go down to his own death searching for David and trying to kill him.
It is in this mess that David cries out to god and says, "Save me, O God, by your name, vindicate me by your might."
It is also in this Psalm that David exclaims "Surely God is my help, the Lord is the one who sustains me."
When you are going through the worst of times, there is nothing better, more calming, and more satisfying than crying out to God. When you are weak then HE is strong. It gives you confidence, hope, and peace in the middle of your circumstances. Cry out to God in the day of trouble and he will sustain you! Give him your troubles and he will give you his peace! Try it today and see what happens.
Let us pray: Lord God, you alone are my help and my shield, a mighty fortress and help are you, sustain me in my weakness. deliver me according to your good will. Amen.
