DEVOTION:  Jeremiah 11:18-20 (O.T. Reading for this weekend)
18 Because the Lord revealed their plot to me, I knew it, for at that time he showed me what they were doing. 19 I had been like a gentle lamb led to the slaughter; I did not realize that they had plotted against me, saying,

"Let us destroy the tree and its fruit;
let us cut him off from the land of the living,
that his name be remembered no more."
20 But you, Lord Almighty, who judge righteously
and test the heart and mind,
let me see your vengeance on them,
for to you I have committed my cause.

Jeremiah is in the middle of great turmoil here.  His own hometown, Anathoth, and the people he knew very well are plotting against him.  His own church wants to kill him.  He is only preaching and proclaiming what the Lord has given him.  He isn't doing anything wrong.  It is a classic case of blame and kill the messenger.

Yet, Jeremiah finds strength and courage for he says, "20 But you, Lord Almighty, who judge righteously and test the heart and mind, let me see your vengeance on them, for to you I have committed my cause."  He has given it all up to God.  he knows that what he has been doing and saying is from god and so to back away or to do differently wouldn't help but only hurt him and his people.  So he has committed his cause to the Lord.

Do you know that what you are doing is right?  If it is, then commit it to the Lord.  Set your course to follow him and keep on doing it despite the worldly opposition you face.  If it isn't now is the time and the perfect opportunity to repent.  Turn from your wrong ways and turn to the Lord.  Don't keep going in the wrong direction.  Turn today!

The other thing here is that Jeremiah doesn't take vengeance.  He doesn't repay evil with more evil.  Instead, he submits that to the Lord too.  He wants vengeance.  He wants the people to pay, but he knows that it is not good or right for him to be the one to do it.  He's happy to let the Lord take care of that.

Don't let bitterness, rage, anger, or malice even spend one minute in your heart.  Get rid of it.  Forgive as you have been forgiven.  Give it all up to God and he will direct you.

Let up pray: Create in me a clean heart, O God and renew a right spirit within me.  Cast me not away from your presence, nor take your Holy Spirit from me.  Restore to me the JOY of your salvation and uphold me with Your free Spirit.  Amen.

TODAY'S QUIZ: Who was Elihu, in the book of Job, and what was different about him compared to the others?

____________________________________________________________________________________________
LAST TIME'S QUIZ:   When was the book of Job written?
Here's a funny (and correct) answer from Pat King.  Thanks Pat!
So, gonna give this a try. And the answer is (drum roll here!)
Before there were typewriters!
Don't like that answer? How about during the time of the Patriarchs? (And here are the TOP 10 reasons why. Notice I didn't say, "the least 10." No, I found the TOP 10!!!)
Now, do you want me to narrow it down a bit more? (Of course you do. You're picky like that.) Well, it is generally agreed by scholars that the book comes from the period between the 7th and 4th centuries BCE, with the 6th century as the most likely date and most tend to think it was written by Moses.
At least, that what the sources I checked said.

OPERATION BACKPACK FOR SEPTEMBER  IS CANNED FRUIT!!
Many children in our community are very poor.  They are able to get some of their meals at school during the week, but often go hungry on weekends.  Operation backpack is a way that our community has decided to help these kids.

Every month throughout the school year, each church participating will take one food item and collect just that food item.  At the end of the month the food will be delivered to school.  The school officials along with volunteers will distribute the food to kids backpacks to take home.
Throughout the month of September we will be collecting canned fruit . All size cans and even individual portions will be accepted.  The fruit will be delivered to the schools October 1.   We will have a box in the narthex for deposits.
