Wear your St. John's shirts tomorrow at the carnival
Prayer for Hilda Heichelbech
Daily Email: Thursday, September 10, 2015
Even one sin separates us from God. And even if we never "committed" a sin we still would be sinful because we are conceived and born sinful. That is what Job is getting at here. At the beginning of the book of Job it says that Job was a "blameless and upright", yet, he was a mortal, he was human and so he wasn't "righteous".
Certainly there are people in this world who are "better" than others. They are "better" in the worlds eyes because they don't do as much wrong, or they are nicer people, or they go to church, or whatever. But "better" is NOT good enough to get to God. "Better" is not going to get you anywhere with the Almighty. Perfect is the only thing that is going to turn the Lord's favor from destruction to salvation. And Jesus was that perfect one. He was the perfect sacrifice. He was the perfect person who did ALL the right things on earth, lived a sinless life, and died a sinless death.
Job knew that, he was humble, and he relied on God's mercy and grace. He questioned God. He didn't like all the pain and suffering he was going through. Yet, when it was all said and done, all he could do was rely on God's love, mercy, and grace.
The same is true with you. You can rail against God. You can try to reason with him. You can dispute with him. You can even disagree with him. By the way, just because you disagree with him doesn't mean that you're right. In the end, all you can do, thanks be to God, is rely on Him!
Rely on Him today! Rely on him for your peace. Rely on Him for mercy and grace. Rely on Him for strength to make it through the tough day you're about to have. Rely on him to give you guidance on how to raise your children, deal with your strained relationships, deal with your finances, live your life. Take a lesson from Job. Don't curse God. Don't reject him. Just surrender to him, and in the end he will lift you up forever!
Let us pray: Lord, when I'm trying too hard, when I'm too proud, or when I'm relying to much on myself, help me to rely on you instead. Amen.

Come to the Carnival this Saturday! 11am-7pm
Daily Email: Wednesday, September 9, 2015
As I sat in the trustees meeting with a bunch of guys and one wonderful lady who had all worked at least 12 hours and many had come to the meeting at 7pm straight from work, I was humbled and at the same time honored that they took the time after working all day and just worn out to come to church for a meeting. Who does that except those who are moved by the Holy Spirit to work for Him?
So I wanted to use this devotion to honor all of you who work hard all day and continue to serve the Lord in your work even when you are beat down, dog tired. It is a God given thing to be able to work! It is a wonderful thing to use the gifts God has given you to do work. It says so right in the passage above.
Oftentimes, especially in our society today, work is considered an evil word. This should not be. Even in the perfect garden of Eden where everything was perfect, God put man in it to work it and take care of it. Did you catch that? He put man to work right away.
Adam had things to do. He had animals to care for. He had a garden to tend. It was work.
It is a God pleasing thing to work hard. God has made you that way!!
I am honored to be the pastor of so many people who work so hard to provide for their families and to do God's will in this world. I am honored to be your brother in Christ and your friend!
At the same time, I wouldn't be doing my job if I didn't warn you to keep from making your work your god. You can do that you know. When work becomes more important than time spent in prayer and worship, and when making the almighty dollar becomes more important than your relationship with the Lord you are making work your god. There needs to be a reconfiguring of priorities. Yes, be proud of your work! Yes, enjoy your work! Yes, work hard and provide for your families. But also be an example of faith to them and realize that God himself took a day of rest and enjoyed his creation!
Prayer: Lord, thank you for giving us work to do and for moving so many in our St. John's family to work so hard! Help them to keep their priorities straight and continue to grow in their relationship with you. Amen.

I usually get my readings for these daily devotions from my daily Bible in chronological order. Today's reading is the beginning of Job.
If you know the story of Job, you know that it is not a happy go lucky story. From the very beginning, Job is under fire. He loses everything including his children. He is inflicted with boils. His life is in complete and total disarray. And yet, as you read the passage above, you see Job.... worshiping.
It seems like a cruel thing. Job never did anything wrong to deserve what he got. In fact, from what we read, it was only because Satan thought that he could get Job to curse God and God knew that Job wouldn't do it, so he let it all happen as a test.
Yet, it is a perfect example of how things happen to us. The bad things that happen to us aren't always a direct result of our sin. Sometimes we are just going along just fine and serving the Lord and bad things happen out of the blue.
This is a perfect lesson to us because it shows us and tells us that the Lord gives and the Lord takes away. It is HIS to give and it is HIS to take away. Even our own life is HIS. And so we worship him no matter the circumstance. When he gives us he does so in mercy. When he takes away he still loves us and gives us more grace. His presence never goes away. His love never fails.
When bad things happen, don't curse God, don't blame God. it is ok to tear your robes. It is ok to feel bad and to let your emotions show. it is ok to grieve! But in your pain and grief worship! Worship the Lord in your grief! Give glory to God in your pain. May the name of the Lord be praised in your circumstances no matter what they may be.
Let us pray: Lord, you give and take away. Blessed be your name. Amen.

LAST TIME'S QUIZ: Who are Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego?
They were friends of Daniel and believers in God who defied the king's decree and were thrown in the fiery furnace. The Lord saved them and made them witnesses to the king of God's mighty power.

If you've ever heard me or another pastor talk about repentance and wondered what in the world he is talking about, this verse from Ezekiel is a very good explanation of it.
The real question, and one whose answer will help the definition is, what does repentance look like?
ANSWER:
Repentance looks like forgiveness where once there was bitterness, resentment and a grudge.
Repentance looks like selflessness where once there was selfishness and greed.
Repentance looks like humility where there was once pride and arrogance.
Repentance looks like love where there once was hate.
Repentance looks like a continual struggle against sin that continues to creep up on you and get you when you're weak. Think about those who have to deal with addiction.
Repentance looks like hate for sin of any kind. Even when it is unpopular. Hate the sin. Love the sinner.
Repentance looks like a surrender to God's will even when everything in your body and mind would rather do the opposite.
Repentance looks like turning away from sin and turning to God.
Repentance is realizing that you are a sinner and you are ALWAYS in need of a Savior. You will never be without sin on this side of heaven. The good that you want to do, you don't do, but the evil you don't want to do you keep on doing. Romans 7:17-25
My brothers and sisters, I beg you to realize that you are a sinner in need of a Savior. Turn from your sins and turn to God so that he can work in you!
Prayer: Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Amen.
