DEVOTION:  Genesis 2:15  The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.

As I sat in the trustees meeting with a bunch of guys and one wonderful lady who had all worked at least 12 hours and many had come to the meeting at 7pm straight from work, I was humbled and at the same time honored that they took the time after working all day and just worn out to come to church for a meeting.  Who does that except those who are moved by the Holy Spirit to work for Him?

So I wanted to use this devotion to honor all of you who work hard all day and continue to serve the Lord in your work even when you are beat down, dog tired.  It is a God given thing to be able to work!  It is a wonderful thing to use the gifts God has given you to do work.  It says so right in the passage above.

Oftentimes, especially in our society today, work is considered an evil word.  This should not be.  Even in the perfect garden of Eden where everything was perfect, God put man in it to work it and take care of it. Did you catch that?  He put man to work right away.

Adam had things to do.  He had animals to care for.  He had a garden to tend.   It was work.

It is a God pleasing thing to work hard.  God has made you that way!!

I am honored to be the pastor of so many people who work so hard to provide for their families and to do God's will in this world.  I am honored to be your brother in Christ and your friend!

At the same time, I wouldn't be doing my job if  I didn't warn you to keep from making your work your god.  You can do that you know.  When work becomes more important than time spent in prayer and worship, and when making the almighty dollar becomes more important than your relationship with the Lord you are making work your god.  There needs to be a reconfiguring of priorities.  Yes, be proud of your work!  Yes, enjoy your work!  Yes, work hard and provide for your families.  But also be an example of faith to them and realize that God himself took a day of rest and enjoyed his creation!

Prayer:  Lord, thank you for giving us work to do and for moving so many in our St. John's family to work so hard!  Help them to keep their priorities straight and continue to grow in their relationship with you.  Amen.

OPERATION BACKPACK FOR SEPTEMBER  IS CANNED FRUIT!!
Many children in our community are very poor.  They are able to get some of their meals at school during the week, but often go hungry on weekends.  Operation backpack is a way that our community has decided to help these kids.

Every month throughout the school year, each church participating will take one food item and collect just that food item.  At the end of the month the food will be delivered to school.  The school officials along with volunteers will distribute the food to kids backpacks to take home.
Throughout the month of September we will be collecting canned fruit . All size cans and even individual portions will be accepted.  The fruit will be delivered to the schools October 1.   We will have a box in the narthex for deposits.
