DEVOTION: Joshua 7:10-15
10 The Lord said to Joshua, "Get up! Why have you fallen on your face? 11 Israel has sinned; they have transgressed my covenant that I commanded them; they have taken some of the devoted things; they have stolen and lied and put them among their own belongings. 12 Therefore the people of Israel cannot stand before their enemies. They turn their backs before their enemies, because they have become devoted for destruction.[a] I will be with you no more, unless you destroy the devoted things from among you. 13 Get up! Consecrate the people and say, 'Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow; for thus says the Lord, God of Israel, "There are devoted things in your midst, O Israel. You cannot stand before your enemies until you take away the devoted things from among you."
You ever wonder why you have that feeling in the pit of your stomach when you know that you've done something wrong and it just hasn't come out in the open yet? Ever thought about why you feel "cursed" when things seem to constantly be going wrong in your life? Ever wished you could restore a broken relationship, but you just don't have the guts to take the first step and ask for forgiveness, but then everything around you seems to remind you of that broken relationship?
There's sin in your life that you haven't dealt with, that's why! You haven't made amends with the person. You haven't confessed your sins to God and to the person against whom you sinned. You haven't taken the sin off your shoulders and laid it at the foot of the cross like you should.
In the story for today, some of the Israelites had taken golden statues and other artifacts out of the city of Jericho after God had specifically told them not to. Because they did this, God let the city of Ai beat them badly in battle. No longer were they the people who had just destroyed the famous city of Jericho, because the Lord let them suffer the consequence for their sin. And until that sin was dealt with it would continue to be that way.
Guilt is a horrible thing. Until you deal with it, it will plague you. You will become weak under its power. You won't enjoy life as much as you should, and you won't have that complete peace that passes all understanding.
I urge you to deal with you sin! REPENT! Turn away from it and turn to God. Let the Lord God deal with it according to his will. Give it up to Him daily! You are never going to be completely rid of sin all together, but God will cleanse your heart of the guilt of it, and give you opportunity to praise and honor him in your confession, repentance, and forgiveness.
Let us pray: Lord God, thank you for giving me opportunities daily to get rid of my guilt and to live in peace with you! Help me to use those opportunities and to grow in your grace daily. Amen.

"Whose Children Are We?"
March 10, 2015
"So they picked up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple" (John 8:59).
Read John 8:45-59.
Now the crowd could prove whether they were truly children of God as they claimed, or children of the devil as Jesus had said. Would they come running to the Savior for forgiveness and life, or cling to the dark lies of Satan? John tells us their grim decision: "they picked up stones to throw at Him."
You and I go to church and in Baptism God made us His very own children. But how often do we live as if we weren't? How attentive are we when we hear or read Jesus' words? How closely do we follow Him in our words and actions? Are we willing to pray "Your will be done?" or do we only want to accept Jesus on our own terms? Are we as quick to turn on Him as the crowds were?
Jesus miraculously hides Himself and leaves the temple grounds. The time for His death is drawing near, but He will not die at the hands of an angry mob under a pile of rocks at the temple. He will be dragged outside of the city at the hands of the Roman soldiers and nailed to a cross.
Even today Jesus' words often bring a violent reaction. If we are walking in darkness we are not always excited to hear the truth. But Christ promises to wash away our sins and restore us in faith. He will guard and protect us and finally bring us to our eternal home where we will always walk in His light.
THE PRAYER: Lord, give courage to all Your faithful people who bring Your light into our dark world. Empower me to turn from the darkness and share my faith as You guide and protect me. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

Too often we gloss over certain parts of scripture. It was like that for me this morning as I was trying to read through my daily Bible reading. The verse above is from a bigger section that is Moses' blessing to Israel right before he dies. It seems awful personal, like I am reading someone's personal letter to a good friend. Indeed that is what it is. It is Moses' farewell letter tot he people he had spent forty years with in the desert. He had gone through a lot with them. He had been their leader through some of the most memorable events in all of human history.
It got me to thinking what I would write in a farewell letter. If I knew I was going to die soon, what would I want to write to my kids, to the congregation, to everyone I know? I guess I would write something like Moses wrote in the verse above. I would give encouragement that as long as we have faith in Jesus we are saved by the Lord! I would say that there is no one like us on all the earth that have the Lord's protection from the evil one. I would, most of all, remind them that they are safe in Jesus for ALL ETERNITY, and that they will see me again on the other side.
What would you write? Would you give all sorts of wisdom on how to live on the earth? Would you tell them how much you love them? Would you encourage them?
Don't wait till you know that you're dying. That day may never come. Start doing all that today. Tell your kids that you love them! Tell all your loved ones that both you and they are safe in Jesus and that they can rest assured they will see you in paradise! Tell them that Jesus loves them and will never stop.
Prayer: Lord, thank you for protecting me. Thank you for assuring me of your salvation. Thank you for allowing me to rest in your grace. Help me to assure others of all off this too. Amen.
