"Unfactual Facts"
June 26, 2014
Some things don't change. Long ago, when I was in grade school, I was fascinated by dinosaurs -- just like my grandchildren are today.
A month or so ago I had a conversation with them about the giant beasties. Remembering my education, I commented on how big those dinosaurs were. Very politely, my grandchildren informed me there were a lot of small dinosaurs too. Remembering my textbook's pictures, I noted how dinosaurs were all gray or green in color. Apparently, the textbook was wrong. My grandchildren shared that while some dinosaurs may have been gray or green, they could have been many other colors too.
Trying not to be a dinosaur myself, I shared the one fact about which I was positive: "Dinosaurs were all cold-blooded."
I should have stayed silent.
Speaking for the others, one of my grandkids said, "But Grandpa, don't you know the latest findings show that dinosaurs were probably warm-blooded?" That was when I remembered I had to rotate my tires and left the room.
Friends, I can't wait until I see those grandkids again. That's because a new study says dinosaurs weren't warm-blooded and they weren't cold-blooded, they were something in the middle: they were mesothermic. Somehow or another, the scientists checked out the growth rate of the bones and linked that information to the beasts' metabolic rate. Their calculations showed dinosaurs were in a whole new category.
Now this vignette from my family life is not without a point.
The point is this: once upon a time, the experts assured us that dinosaurs being cold-blooded was a fact so certain you could take it to the bank. Then, not so long afterwards, the experts assured us they were pretty sure that dinosaurs were warm-blooded. That was a fact. Now there is enough supposed evidence for the experts to tell us dinosaurs fit somewhere in between being cold- and warm-blooded. This, they assure us is also a truthful fact.
The only comfort I derive from this ever-changing bunch of facts is this: someday my grandchildren will grow up and have grandchildren of their own. Those new grandchildren will correct the adults and say, "The experts tell us dinosaurs were polka-dotted and did the waltz."
Now the reason I tell you this is just to say the truth of man is a pretty shaky thing. This past week I read an article about how scientists were wrong about the earth's age by some 40 million years. I read another story of how Columbus lied when he said his ship, the Santa Maria, was sunk. Facts keep coming fast and are dismissed even faster.
This is why I am thankful we have an unchangeable God whose Word is truth.
There aren't many facts in this world I am sure will remain the same year after year and century after century. Those facts which make the cut of confidence are those which tell me humankind is sinful, and the Lord unilaterally devised a plan to rescue us from the punishment, which was sure to come. I know I am saved because, 2,000 years ago, God's Son, according to prophecy, lived a perfect life, carried my sins, was crucified, died and rose from the dead.
And those are facts which aren't going to change ... ever.
THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, I give thanks Your love, Your grace, Your Son, and His resurrection are facts in which I can believe and be saved. No matter what else I believe in this world, may I cling to the truth of salvation by Your grace. In the Name of Jesus I ask it. Amen.
The Savior asked His followers to share His story of salvation. Sadly, doing so can be frightening and intimidating. If you would like to learn how to be more comfortable fulfilling the Lord's request, Lutheran Hour Ministries is holding a SENT outreach conference in Detroit, covering the dates of July 24-27. For more information, see www.lhm.org/conference.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ: (A bit harder question again today.) Why was Joseph's plan to divorce Mary quietly actually an honorable thing and one that would be somewhat good for Mary?
(A great answer from Pat King) When the marriage between Joseph and Mary was arranged by her parents, and they became engaged, it was considered the same as being married – just without the fringe benefits. So, for all intents and purposes, Mary was a married woman. If it was discovered that she was pregnant, as a married woman, she could have been stoned to death for adultery. So, Joseph decided to divorce her, so that she wouldn’t be stoned to death.

TODAY'S QUIZ: What was Mary's cousin's name? (The lady she would go and visit to tell her about being pregnant with Jesus.)

For hundreds of years people have been trying to understand this Virgin birth, and in order to understand they have instead ruined its meaning by trying to explain it away, or by using their own human reason to say something other than what the Word of God plainly says.
Truth is, it doesn't make sense to our common brains. Virgins can't have children. It is not scientifically or biologically possible. So people have said things like, "The word virgin doesn't really mean 'virgin' in the sense that we know it today. It should mean 'young woman'." Or they will try to explain it in some other logical and scientific way so that it make sense to their finite human brains.
The real truth is that God is the creator and master of science. He created the biology we have. He knows exactly how everything works, because He started it all. So, since He is the master of it, He can also go above and beyond the rules of science when He wants to, and that is exactly what He did when He did what is commonly known as the Immaculate Conception. He literally came into and overshadowed Mary. He put baby Jesus into Mary's womb by supernatural means. She was a virgin. She didn't not have intercourse with anyone till after Jesus was born. Both the word virgin and the context of the passage and others like it show this very clearly.
Why did God do it this way? Well, in order for the Son of God to be sinless He couldn't be the product of two human parents. If He was, he would have inherited the sin of Adam and Eve (original sin). Yet, because he was conceived of the Holy Spirit He was sinless from the beginning. We were sinful from birth, sinful from the time our mother conceived us, because of the sin we inherit, just like any other hereditary illness. Because of genetics, some are born with a propensity for heart disease, some for diabetes, others with other cancer genes. All of us are born with sin. We can't escape it. All of us that is, except for Jesus.
Jesus had no sin, but He became sin for us, so that we might become His righteousness. He left perfection at the right hand of God, came down and was born perfectly, lived a perfect life, and died a perfect death so that He could take on our sin upon Himself.
That all began at the Immaculate Conception. Even that was part of God's plan from the beginning! All for you!
Prayer: Lord God, Your thoughts are not our thoughts, neither are Your ways our ways! Thank you for that, because if they were, we'd be really messed up. Amen.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ: In what year (approximately) was Jesus born? ( A bit harder question for today.) It is estimated (no one is sure) that Jesus was born approximately between 6 and 3B.C. It used to be thought that our calendar (the Roman calendar) was started with the year of Jesus' birth, but further investigation and evidence suggests that Jesus was born earlier than that.

For LIBBY PAILER, who is recovering from a broken pelvis at The Cedars in Chesterfield.

Agape is in desperate need of Help this Saturday for their fundraiser
This coming Saturday, June 28, is the Summer Agape Luau Fundraiser which raises $10,000+ for Agape. We eliminated our large committee this year in hopes of raising more money and thought we could secure young people to help with the event, but I am running short in this area.
We need volunteers to help set up at 10:00am Saturday morning (2 hours) and we need 4 valet parkers for the event (5:30-11:30) and we need 2 people to work the event (5:30-11:30, cleaning tables, running for ice, light candles, etc).
If you know of any responsible young people, 18 years +, it would save us from hiring our employees at $10+/hour. I hate to deduct from the proceeds to hire people, but I have already reached out to the law enforcement “Explorers”, the Warrenton “Iteract Club” and St. Dominic HS for service hours (through contacts with each).
Thanks in advance for your help.

Have a blessed day everyone!
Prayer Request for Pat Puckett
Tuesday, June 24, 2014
We don't normally think of our parents as little kids, yet at one time they were. They were little kids just like you and I once were. Everyone had a beginning. Everyone that is, except Jesus.
We don't normally think of Jesus as eternal. We think of Him as that cute little baby born in a stable and laid in a manger. We think of him as the guy who suffered and died on the cross and rose from the dead. Very seldom do we think of Him as the creator of the universe. Hardly ever do we think of Him with the Father and the Holy Spirit being there from before the world began, having us in mind, and creating us as His own, that we might live under His in His kingdom and serve Him in everlasting righteousness, innocence, and blessedness.
He is exactly that! JESUS CHRIST IS ETERNAL! He was there before the world began and He will be there throughout eternity! From everlasting to everlasting, He is God! That should give us comfort, because we know that throughout the ages, whatever the circumstances in this world, changing as they might be, Christ has been there through it all and has been the one constant of peace and perfection through all time!
He is present for you too! He is present in you! He is present with you! Have comfort in that! Know that even as you go through changes each and every day, the Lord Jesus doesn't! He is the same yesterday, today, and forever! His mercies are new every morning! Great is His faithfulness!
Prayer: Lord God Jesus Christ, thank You and praise You for being eternal in my life and the life of the whole world! Amen.

"Reborn"
June 23, 2014
So, let's see the hands of those readers of the Daily Devotions who are getting older.
As far as I can tell from here, that includes just about everyone. Some of the folks who didn't hold up their hands say they didn't do so because they thought I would ask them to publicly reveal their age. Others didn't do so because they believe I can't see them from the keyboard of my computer.
The truth is we are all getting older, and not necessarily better. The things we used to do easily are now harder or impossible to accomplish. The illnesses we once shrugged off are now only conquered after a prolonged battle. Then, of course, there are the folks whose immune systems have been battered by chemotherapy.
Because all of this is true, many of us might easily find ourselves musing, "Wouldn't it be nice if we could restore those weakened immune systems?"
Well, it appears that scientists at the University of Southern California say they may have discovered a way to do just that. That way is: fasting. Yup. Fasting. When they put folks on a cycle of two-to-four-day fasts, which took place over a period of six months, the results were dramatic. As near as I can tell from their big words, the bodies of these folks ended up breaking down the old immune system and beginning with an almost new one.
Please remember the Daily Devotions are not designed to offer medical advice, and they certainly shouldn't be used to start some kind of procedure without a physician's blessing. All we are reporting is this: scientists think it is possible to jump start a new immune system.
Oh, there is one other thing this devotion is saying. We are also saying there is no way for anybody to regenerate a sinful soul. Scripture is plain: the soul that sins will die. (See Ezekiel 18:20.) Try as you will, you can't change that fact.
This is why we all need a Savior.
In 2 Corinthians 5:17, St. Paul tells us when we are in Christ, we have become a new creation, the old has passed away, and the new has come. Peter agrees with Paul and amplifies that concept when he says we have been born again to a living hope. (See 1Peter 1:3-9.)
Indeed, through the resurrection of the Savior, the eternal destiny is changed for all who are given faith in the Redeemer. Once they were destined to hell, but now they are headed toward heaven. Once there was no escape from damnation, but now salvation is their lot.
The rebirth the Savior brings about is a thing too wonderful for words. It may be too wonderful for words, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't try to express an everlasting thankfulness for God's gracious, blood-bought gift.
THE PRAYER: Dear Lord Jesus, I give thanks that through Your life and resurrection I have been born again. May I live as a thankful person who is most grateful for this new lease on eternal life. In Your Name. Amen.
All too often the job of reaching others is left to others. That can be unfortunate. After all, there are times when YOU may be the best person to reach someone who is lost or wandering. If you have always wanted to know how to do such a sharing of the Savior, you may want to attend Lutheran Hour Ministries' SENT Outreach Conference, which is July 24-27 in Detroit. For more information, visit www.lhm.org/conference.

JUST A NOTE OF ENCOURAGEMENT TO ATTEND WORSHIP
Always remember and never forget what you RECEIVE in WORSHIP! You get to hear words directly from God. You get to have fellowship with your brothers and sisters in Christ, and those who are confirmed get to receive Christ's body and blood for the forgiveness of their sins. Everyone gets to publicly confess their sinfulness and hear the DIRECT words of forgiveness of Christ through the pastor.
There is nothing more important in the life of a Christian on Sunday morning than worship!
So far this Summer our worship attendance has been awful. It is understandable if you are out of town, but if you are in town there is NO EXCUSE. Just because it is Summer vacation from school and other things doesn't mean it should be Summer vacation from worship!
God never takes a break from you and you shouldn't take a break from Him and His gifts either. His gifts of His Word and His Sacraments are of utmost importance in your life and your family's life. Please make every effort to be in worship for your own sake and for the sake of your brothers and sisters in Christ!
Make plans to be in worship this Saturday night or Sunday morning especially as we induct Kelsey Overbeck!
