"Rest in Peace ... Really!"

May 1, 2014
thunder bay(Jesus said) "Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life." Revelation 2:10
William Hahn, Jr. lived from 1905 to 1980. His tombstone reads, "I told you I was sick." The stone which sits over the deceased talk-show host, Merv Griffin, says, "I will not be back after this message," and the gravestone over Mohammed Said al-Sahal affirms, "I am not really dead. Do not believe those American lies."

Of course, the shortest obituary I have ever read was composed by Swedish native Stig Kernell. Before he died at the age of 92, Kernell had given strict instructions to his funeral home. They were to send his obituary to the papers without making any changes. When he died, the morticians made good on their promise and, sure enough, in the two local papers, under his name on the obituary page, it read, "I AM DEAD."

That's it, three words: "I AM DEAD."

Well, the media got hold of the unusual death notice and began contacting Kernell's two sons. Eventually, his boys got together and wrote a more traditional announcement. This they did because they didn't want anybody to think there had been bad blood between them and their dead dad.

One of them explained, "The short obituary is reflective of our father's sense of humor." He continued, "It has helped us to cope with the loss of him, in that he was not at all scared of death."

Scripture tells everyone who believes in Jesus as their Savior that they can share Kernell's lack of fear when it comes to dying. When an unbeliever has to regard death as a step into the "great unknown," Christians know their Savior has prepared a place for His forgiven followers in heaven. Believers of Islam must concede that Allah is not bound by any rules, and he will do what he is going to do. There's not much comfort there. Other major faiths tell their adherents that since they may not have done enough good in this life to balance the scales of justice, they may be repeating life until they get it right.

Only Christianity lays down the comforting truth: "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved" (see Acts 16:31).

But there's more. Believers in the risen Redeemer can appreciate the words of Revelation that tell us not to be afraid of persecution or death because those who remain faithful will receive a "crown of life."

It's good to know. After all, the day is coming when a memorial stone will be put above each of us. When that day comes, may those who are left behind be comforted by the knowledge that, for us, death was only the gateway to eternal life with our Savior.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, as a sinful human being, I am unable to see what is going to happen in the future. Even so, as a forgiven follower of the Christ, I am sure the approach of death cannot fill me with fear and trembling. For this transformation brought about by Jesus, may I always give thanks. In the Savior's Name I ask it. Amen.

Prayer requests from Sandy Robine

Prayers for our Seminarians that received their first calls last evening at Concordia Seminary/St. Louis.

Especially for  Harrison & Stacy Parker going to Anchorage, Alaska AND Jacob & Alexandra Wampfler going to Topeka, KS.  BTW, Harrison & Stacy are both FROM San Diego, CA, so Achorage should be a real experience.  At least, this year in St. Louis, was a great dress rehearsal. ha.

These couples are renters, in St. Louis, of Sandy & Steve Robine.

Prayers to for Matthew & Kathleen Resner who will be returning this summer from his vicarage year in Litchfield, Illinois, to St. Louis, for Matt's 4th year at Concordia.  Through these past 3 years at the Seminary Kathleen has continued to teach at Salem Lutheran School (Black Jack).  She has been commuting between Litchfield and North County all this past year!  Especially now with this nasty Spring weather, please pray for her safety on the highways!

DEVOTION: Asa did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, a his father David had done......  He even deposed his grandmother Maakah from her position as queen mother, because she had made a repulsive image for the worship of Asherah.  The Story p. 200

Sometimes you have to do some really hard things as a disciple of God, even depose your own grandmother for making a false idol.  Sometimes it means getting rid of something comfortable and familiar.  Sometimes it means ridding yourself of a bad habit.  Still other times it means forgiving that person you really don't want to forgive.  Still others it means getting rid of friends that are dragging you down and weakening your faith or making you get rid of it all together.

Jesus never promised that life would be easy as a Christian.  In fact, he said just the opposite, "I have not come to bring peace but a sword.  And again "I have come to set a son against his father, a daughter against her mother...."  Just because you are a Christian, confess Jesus, and mostly do the right things, doesn't mean that all of your relationships are going to go smoothly or that everyone is going to like you.  Anyone who has been a Christian for any length of time knows this.

What Jesus does say is this, "Come to me all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you, for my yoke is easy and my burden is light and you will find rest for your souls."

Jesus is the way and the truth and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through him, and yet, because of your sinful nature and the sinfulness in the world, as Jesus once again said, "In this world you will have trouble, but take heart I have overcome the world."

Don't trust in Jesus to take away all your problems.  If you do you will be disappointed.  Trust that Jesus has overcome the world and take you at last to paradise where, once and for all, trouble will be gone forever!

Prayer:  Lord God, I thank you for overcoming the world on my behalf and giving me rest!  Amen.

Video Troubles and Apologies

I apologize for the difficult start to the video of the eighth graders reading their essays and the sound quality.  Please go to right around minute 4:30 of the video and turn your speakers up to maximum.

1. First the microphone at the pulpit quit working sometime between Monday when we practiced and Sunday during the service.

2. Then the microphone on the lectern needed to be turned up and down from kid to kid.  Once we figured it out, it worked well.  (We didn't plan on using it.)

3. The first couple girls talked very quietly and were kind of hard to hear.  (Nothing I could do about that.)  They did a tremendous job, and I am very proud of them!

All in all, it went very well!  I am extremely proud of these kids.

Side note-- If anyone has experience or knowledge on video and sound systems I would love his or her input and help from time to time to make sure everything is working properly.  This is certainly not my area of expertise.

DEVOTION: Even after this, Jeroboam did not change his evil ways, but once more appointed priests for the high places from all sorts of people.  Anyone who wanted to become a priest he consecrated for the high places.  The Story p. 197

Sometimes people just refuse to repent and believe.  It happens every day.  You can provide all the evidence that anyone would want.  You can prove that Jesus really did die on a cross and really did rise from the dead.  You can prove that everything that the Scriptures say is true, and if someone's heart is turned against God they will still deny Him.

Such is the case with Jeroboam.  He had every opportunity to turn to God.  He had proof after proof of God's existence and God gave him every chance to repent and believe.  Yet, he would rather go with what the world says and turn after other gods of wood and stone.

Is there anything in your life keeping you from turning and believing in God's pure grace?  Maybe it is a long held belief in something like evolution.  Maybe it's that the world has told you that unborn children are not really humans.  Maybe it's that you don't want to surrender to God that party lifestyle that you have so grown accustomed to.  Maybe it's that you just like to be in control and have everything just the way you want it and if you give it up to God and just sit back and relax you won't be in control anymore and that really scares you.  Maybe it's that if you really truly forgive someone the way God wants you to, you will lose your (make believe) power over that person and you really like holding that wrong over his or her head, because it makes you feel superior.

Whatever the case, know that these things ARE NOT God's will.  What he wants is a humble, contrite, and broken heart.  He wants you to surrender to him so that He can give you the real rest and peace you so desire!

SURRENDER TO HIM TODAY!  Don't be like Jeroboam.

Prayer:  Lord God do whatever you have to do to make me surrender today.  Amen.

DEVOTION:  When King Jeroboam heard what the man of God cried out against the altar at Bethel, he stretched out his hand from the altar and said, "Seize him!"  Bu the hand he stretched out toward the man shriveled up, so that he could not pull it back.  Also, the altar was split apart and its ashes poured out according to the sign given by the man of God by the word of the Lord.  The Story pp. 196-197

Sometimes God does things to make sure that we know who is in charge and even at times to reset the course of human events and/or to make people repent of their sins.  Remember the exodus and the crossing of the Red Sea?  Remember the anointing of David?  Today we have another one of those instances jeroboam was going against the Lord, offering sacrifices at the high places, and God would have none of it, so he sent a prophet to speak out against the altar and against King Jeroboam.  Jeroboam didn't like it so he pointed the guards toward the prophet and said "Seize him".  As he did, he lost the use of his hand and as it says it "shriveled up".   Along with that, the Lord struck that altar and smashed it to pieces.  He did this to show the king who was really in charge and to get the king to turn back to him as he should have.

Has there ever been a time where God has stopped you in your tracks from doing something against Him?  Have you ever suffered such severe consequences for your sin that you immediately turned away from that sin and turned back to God?  We all have, and we almost always realize and recognize the hand of God in whatever happened.

Those times may be hard to go through.  It may hurt or a little or even a lot to suffer the consequences of our sins here on this earth, but it is a whole lot better than suffering the eternal consequences we truly deserve.  Today I urge you to thank the Lord for your suffering because suffering produces perseverance, perseverance produces character, and character produces hope!  And that hope will never disappoint us, because our hope is in Christ Jesus!

Prayer:  Lord God, thank you for allowing me to suffer so that I may turn back to you and live forever.  Amen.
