DEVOTION:  "Then the temple of the Lord was filled with a cloud, and the priests could not perform their service because of the cloud, for the glory of the Lord filled the temple of God."  1 Kings 8:11

This past weekend we had 184 people in worship.  That was the most people we've had in worship since Easter.  It was wonderful to see so many folks there.  It made my heart glad to see church like that.

When the house is full there is gladness, but always know this, where two or three are gathered in His name, He is there with them.  It doesn't matter how empty or full worship is, the Lord is there.  And it is a good thing!

Of course we all LOVE to see the house of the Lord full every time we come to worship.  That is because the fuller it is the more people are hearing God's Word and receiving His gifts of forgiveness, grace, and peace from Him.  We want everyone to hear God's Word and receive His gifts!

What is even more wonderful is that the past few weeks we have had quite a few visitors, quite a few who haven't heard the Gospel in a very long time if ever at all.  Many of these are interested in becoming members of our church.  Did you know that usually, when people come to visit St. John's looking for a church home, they usually stay and become members.  It is so exciting to see God working through His Word to bring people back to Him after a long absence from His house and to bring people to faith through His Word and Sacraments!!

In the reading for today the Lord showed His presence through the cloud by day and fire by night.  In these last day he shows His presence through His Word and Sacraments and through His faithful followers who share the love of Christ with each other and with the world.

BE PROUD OF YOUR CHURCH!!  INVITE PEOPLE!  BE AN AMBASSADOR FOR CHRIST AND HIS CHURCH HERE AT ST. JOHN'S!  You will be pleasantly encouraged by the results of God's work!

Let us pray:  Lord God, we know that you are omnipresent, but we especially experience Your presence and receive Your gifts in worship.  Help us to take advantage of the wonderful place and people You have provided for us.  Amen.

The Kermit Gosnell Verdict

The Kermit Gosnell Verdict:
Implications for Pro-Life Lutheran Christians

A statement by LCMS Life Ministries
May 13, 2013

After a nine-week trial, which included weeks of graphic testimony, a Pennsylvania jury found Dr. Kermit Gosnell guilty of three of four counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of babies who were born alive, but who died after their spinal cords were severed in procedures Gosnell called "abortions." He was acquitted on the fourth murder charge. Gosnell also was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the botched abortion death of one mother. He faced 258 counts total, including 24 counts of performing abortions after 24 weeks gestation, which is illegal in Pennsylvania, and hundreds of charges of violating Pennsylvania's informed consent and 24-hour waiting period laws. The jury is now in the penalty phase.
Gosnell's murder trial became the subject of much debate nationally after pro-life activists and others criticized the mainstream media for ignoring the trial early on.
As pro-life Christians devoted to the biblical understanding of the sanctity of human life, we grieve over the tragic loss of these lives and the thousands of other children and mothers who die daily as a result of abortion. Today's conviction of Gosnell brings justice for the many victims of this horrific abortion facility and demonstrates that abortion is clearly a slippery slope that seeks to deprive the most helpless of their basic human right: life.
The LCMS develops and promotes resources and support for pregnant women so they can avoid seeking abortions. Abortion doesn't solve — but only masks — problems many women face and leaves many of them grieving the death of a child.
The Gosnell case generated a larger debate and rightly caused people to consider the philosophical issue of why an abortion procedure performed in utero is legal, but also how a similar act a few minutes later, outside the womb, is considered homicide.
Clearly, the case was about the death of five persons and no one can argue against the personhood of these four smaller humans. This case has exposed the ugly underbelly of the pro-abortion movement and it has brought the humanity of unborn children before the public conscience.
We call upon legislators and citizens to examine the brutality of abortion, which takes the lives of 1.2 million children every year, and the mothers who die as well. (The Center for Disease Control reports that about 400 women have died as a result of legal abortions since 1973, and 12 died in 2008, the last time such research was gathered.)
Our church aims to be a place of forgiveness, mercy and healing for all people as we continue to proclaim Christ's comfort and truth in love. As we move forward following this ruling, we offer up our prayers for women and children in need, for families, that those still participating in the abortion industry would stop, and for our nation.

DEVOTION:  (from Lutheran Hour Ministries)

But let all who take refuge in You rejoice; let them ever sing for joy, and spread Your protection over them, that those who love Your Name may exult in You. For You bless the righteous, O Lord; You cover him with favor as with a shield. Psalm 5:11-12

In the last few months there has been some serious news coverage concerning North Korea's desire to shoot some nuclear weapons in the direction of the United States.

Apparently, there seems to be some disagreement on the matter.

Understand, there's no disagreement about that nation's desire. The leaders of North Korea most definitely want the technology. Nor is there any disagreeing about that nation investing almost every penny into making the wish a reality. No, the disagreement among U.S. intelligence agencies is just how long it's going to take for North Korea to develop that ability.

You see, the Defense Intelligence Agency is pretty sure North Korea could launch a missile at us right now; it's just not sure if it could hit us. The Pentagon says the missiles North Korea has featured in its parades have not been flight-tested. Even so, our generals concede North Korea is committed to scaring us by putting into their arsenal a deliverable nuclear weapon.

Well, I can't speak for you, but I think that's pretty scary.

You know, if North Korea were a little child and nuclear weapons were a pocket knife, we would stop that child and carefully take the knife away. But I guess you can't do that kind of thing when you're dealing with a sovereign nation. This means we will just have to live with the idea of North Korea's saber-rattling.

The only thing that surprises me about this whole thing is that while people seem to be frightened about a nuclear war, they're pretty complacent when it comes to the idea of spending eternity in hell.

While neither of those prospects is pleasant, if I were given a choice between being vaporized in a moment by a North Korean nuke or spending my everlasting tomorrows in the torments of the hot place, well, there really is no choice.

Thankfully, the hatred directed against us by sin, the devil and death is not something people have to worry about. Oh, the hatred these three generate is real enough, but just as real is the defense system the Lord Jesus has put into place to protect us.

The Savior's supreme sacrifice has made it possible for us to be free from the condemnation of sin, the consequences of Satan's temptations, and death's cold clutches. With Holy Spirit-given faith in Jesus as our Savior, we are sheltered, safe and secure.

Let these unholy three do their worst, believers can be at peace. David said it rightly: "Let all who take refuge in You rejoice; let them ever sing for joy, and spread Your protection over them."

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, the world is filled with the negative results of sin. May I rejoice in the Savior whose sacrifice has cleansed and keeps me. In Jesus' Name I give thanks. Amen.

A Friday Night at the Rascals game at TR Hughes Ballpark, May 24

Hey folks,

I had originally scheduled this to be an event for our 18-35 year olds, but I am having trouble getting them to sign up and commit to being there.

So I am opening it up to the whole congregation!!

Here's the details,

The cost is $25 per person for the Dog Pound Patio which includes all you can eat food and drink (including beer) from 6:30-8:30pm plus your ticket to the game.

We will leave from church at 6pm.

Babysitting at church may be provided if there is enough interest and I can get a couple babysitters to help us out.

Reply to this email asap to let me know if you are interested!!

Peace be with you all!
Pastor
