DEVOTION:

This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118:24

Thirty-year-old Dan Suski is a business owner, and his sister, 39-year-old Kate Suski, is an architect.

Together they were doing well enough to take a vacation to Puerto Rico. There they chartered a ship to take them out for an all-day fishing trip. Now some might go fishing for a week and not get a nibble, but Dan and Kate were only a few hours on the water before a 200-pound marlin hit Dan's line.

That was when things "began to go south."

While Dan was still fighting his fish, the electrical system on the boat crackled and sparked. Water flooded the engine room and cabin. In a few minutes the captain told them to get into their life-jackets and abandon ship. They did as instructed and were soon joined by the captain and his mate. Dan and Kate waited for rescue to arrive. They waited for over an hour before they began the eight-mile swim to shore.

With their minds and hearts filled with imaginings of sharks and being swept further out to sea, they swam. They swam when a downpour made them lose sight of land. They swam until the sunset and then they swam some more. Eventually, around midnight they approached shore -- a shore with high cliffs, no beach, and surf that would have killed them, if they had tried to make landfall.

The pair kept swimming until they found a small bit of sand. There on a deserted beach, they came ashore and made their way inland. No help could be found, so they fell asleep covered with branches and boughs. The next day they walked three hours before they found someone who would call for help.

Now, my friends, you should know there is a reason why I have told you the story of Dan and Kate.

That reason is supplied by Kate. After her release from the hospital she said, "We are so grateful to be alive right now. ... Since this ordeal, I've been waking up at dawn every morning. I've never looked forward to the sunrise so much in my life."

I like that attitude.

Sadly, it often takes a tragedy or a near catastrophe before people begin to appreciate the day the Lord has made. Heart-attack victims, cancer survivors have often told me how much differently they see life. In other words, they value every 24 hours the Lord gives.

It's a good idea, you know. Not that we have to be afraid of dying. Jesus' sacrifice on Calvary's cross has made it so we don't have to fear leaving this world. Still, as long as we are here, we should give thanks for, and make use of, the time the Lord has bestowed. Like the man said, "This is the day the Lord has made; I will rejoice and be glad in it."

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, may I truly give thanks for all Your blessings. Most of all I rejoice in my Savior whose life, death and resurrection has given me heaven. But let me also give thanks for this day. May I give thanks and use it. This I ask in Jesus' Name. Amen.

DEVOTION:  (Jesus said) "These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life." Matthew 25:46

Some of you may remember the Jackie Gleason show: The Honeymooners.

If you do, you may also recall Ralph's threat to his wife. It went something like "One of these days, Alice, one of these days ... POW! Right in the kisser! BANG! ZOOM! Straight to the moon!"

According to the Dutch Company, Mars One, you can forget about going to the moon. The moon is too close. No, this company is looking for volunteers who are willing to fly directly to Mars.

Now if the idea sounds good to you, don't start packing your bags just yet. First, there will be a charge for those who are selected for the trip. Second, the timetable for blast off is somewhere around the year 2023.

Oh, there's one other thing you might want to know: the trip is one-way.

That's right. Mars One says the folks who go on this trip will be doing their best to establish a colony on the Red Planet. They will live their lives there, and they will die there. Understand, the company is not trying to be hard-hearted -- not at all. The only reason the trip is one-way is because the technology doesn't exist to bring anybody back.

Doesn't sound so good anymore, does it?

Well, my friends, the truth is all of us are on a one-way trip.

Jesus talked about that trip when He said some are on a one-way trip to heaven, and some are on a one-way trip to hell. Any way you look at it, we live our lives; we die, and are judged.

It's a one-way trip.

Now I would assume, given your druthers and for obvious reasons, you would prefer to have your trip end up with you residing in heaven. If so, I have Good News for you.

Jesus Christ -- through the perfect life He lived, through His complete fulfillment of the laws of God, through His victory over death -- has made it possible for you to make that trip. Today, by the Holy Spirit's power, all who have been given faith in the Redeemer are headed for heaven.

That's great!

What is even greater, unlike those who make the trip to Mars, you will never die. By God's grace, all forgiven souls who enter heaven will be spending eternity there in complete peace, contentment and joy. It is my prayer that you've been signed up for that trip.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, I give thanks that through Jesus' sacrifice I am headed for heaven. Now I pray You will use me to reach out to those who, as of today, are headed to hell. By Your power may they have their one-way destination switched. In the Name of the Savior I ask it Amen.

Update on Jonas Borchert: Don Nolte's grandson

The first two weeks of chemo and radiation are now behind us. Jonas has taken it all in stride and (other than a little puking) doesn't seem to have any horrible reactions like he has had in the past. Of course, this is a different kind of chemo and we are just in the "control" phase of his treatment -- keeping it from growing, before we can jump in with the big guns.
This week was technically his "week off" from treatment, but we have been to the hospital every day so far and will go again on Friday, to have his blood drawn for lab testing. Then, next week he starts two more weeks of chemo.
Today, we met for two hours with the Stem Cell specialist to discuss stem cell transplants. Stem cell transplant. is serious. business. In a nutshell, what they do is collect or "harvest" healthy stem cells from your own body and save them. Then they kill off your remaining stem cells and immune system with extremely high dosage chemotherapy (very gueling) and then readminister your own stem cells back into your body hoping that they will regrow without any cancer deviance. It is not a sure thing, it might just buy more time and sometimes can be thought of as a treatment of last resort, but it is an option we need to keep in mind. We could have opted for stem cell transplant right away, but we are going to give experimental treatment a try first. However, there is reason for us to get familiar with it now. If the experimental treatment we've opted for does not work, then there is a possibility that his blood and bone marrow could become cancerous-- thereby ruining the viability of his own stem cells. So, just as soon as soon as he has completed his next two weeks of chemo (and his lab work is just right) Jonas will be recieving daily injections to mobilize his stem cells. He will then be hosipitalized for 3 or 4 days while they hook him up to a machine which will collect them from his blood. (to be frozen for future use.)
We have such amazing friends. And amazing schools. Blaire is in kindergarten this year where Jonas went to school, at Woodland Elementary. They have been soooooooo very amazing at taking care of her. Our shy little bug has come out of her shell, riding the bus and speaking in front of her class. Who would have thunk?!! All the teachers and staff have put my scatter-brained mind at ease in so many ways. They are simply The Best.
AND.. Tonight they are having their student council fundraiser at Culver's on Douglas Rd. in Lee's Summit. From 4pm to 9pm a portion of the sales are going to help support Jonas! Our family is self-employed and struggling to make ends meet right now. So tonight, you can help....simply by ordering dinner! You can come in and sit down or just go through the drive-through. It all counts. Inside the restaurant, they are selling t-shirts and bracelets and will have a 50/50 raffle. Jonas says that you've got to try their butter burgers. They are delicious! What could be better before hunkering down for two days of snow?!!
You probably won't hear from me for about two weeks, but I will post more as they get ready to harvest the stem cells

DEVOTION:
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for our sins to deliver us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen. Galatians 1:3-5

At the age of six, Joey Welch can probably understand the concept of good news and bad news.

For Welch, the bad news began when he went out canoeing with his father in south Florida. Before they launched he wandered down to the water's edge. That was when the alligator grabbed his arm. It was also when his screams told his father something had gone very, very wrong.

By the time Welch's father got to the boy, the alligator had already pulled him into water which was waist deep.

That's the bad news.

The good news begins when the father grabbed hold of his son with one hand and began hitting the alligator's head with the other. Dad was assisted in his rescue attempt by the arrival of a stranger, who began kicking the alligator in the stomach. Rather than suffering such embarrassing abuse, the gator decided it was better to let the boy go and beat a dignified retreat.

The good news is that Joey Welch is alive and well, suffering only the most minor of injuries.

In some ways, I think, Welch's story is ours. For example, we, like him, were helpless. Caught in the jaws of sin, the devil and death, we were unable to set ourselves free. Left to our own devices we would have been eternally lost. Seeing our desperate helplessness and motivated by love, the Savior -- like Welch's father -- came to save us.

Yes, there are similarities.

But there are also dissimilarities between Joey Welch's story and ours. First, the Savior had no stranger offering assistance in the winning of our rescue. If we were to be saved, it was going to happen only because of His singular and special sacrifice.

But there's another difference between us and Joey Welch. The news story says he and his father emerged from that water without much damage. That was certainly not true for the Savior. When Jesus came into this world to save us, there was no doubt -- no question -- as to what would happen to Him.

So we might be freed from our enemies Jesus had to be beaten, whipped, spit upon and crucified. It was a price He was willing to pay for our forgiveness and eternity in heaven. As near as I can tell, St. Paul, without ever hearing of Welch and his father, understood all this. That's why he wrote:

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for our sins to deliver us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Indeed.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, may I always give glory to the Savior who gave Himself so that we might be rescued from the evils of our age. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

TUESDAY'S QUIZ: What does the word "selah" mean as it is seen in several of the Psalms?  kind of a trick question today.  The meaning of the word is uncertain.  All we know is that it has something to do with music.  Maybe an accent mark or a mark for a refrain or something like that.  (Good job Pam!  What happened to everyone else?)

PRAYERS FOR OUR SERVICEMEN
I have been compiling a list of servicemen who are members of St John's so that we can pray for them.  Below is a list of them and where they are currently stationed.  Please note that their stationing changes quickly, so this may not even be up to date, but it is the last known whereabouts that I have of these guys.

Danny Dreyer-  Army- 2nd Lieutenant- graduating from Ranger school Today.

Sam Hargrove- Army- 2 Lieutenant- Ft Rucker, Alabama, will be going through helicopter flight school and other training

David Mincemeyer- Army- Army Specialist- Ft. Carson, CO

Jon Rahn- Navy- Hawaii, not sure of his rank at this time

David Tate- Air Force- 2nd Lieutenant- Kirtland AF Base, Albuquerque, NM

Alex Walters- Navy- E4- Guam

Ryan Woolf- Air Force- Airman 1st Class- Buckley Air Force Base, near Denver, CO

If there are more out there that I just don't know about, please let me know, and I will include him/her on the list.

Also, if you would like your family member or friend included in this list, please reply to this email with all the information!

Pray for these guys.  Some of these guys are in harm's way right now, others are training to put themselves in harm's way.  All of them have volunteered to serve and protect their country (which is you).
