Burial immediately after funeral at Mt. Lebanon cemetery in North County

DEVOTION:  (from pastor)
He went in and said to them, "Why all this commotion and wailing?  The child is not dead but asleep."  But they laughed at him.  Mark 5:39
 
Can God do anything?  Can he turn water into wine?  Can he raise someone from the dead?  Can he heal the sick?  Can he rise from the dead?  Can he save you from your sins by His death on the cross? 
 
The answer to all these things is a definite YES!  Right? 
 
If he can do all these things, then my next question is, can he work in you and through you?  Can he work wonders with your tithes and offerings?  Can he make the most of your time and fill that time with all manner of good things because of the faith you have in Him?  Can he use the talents and abilities that he has given you to do His will and perform his good works?  If the answer to the above is yes, then the answer to all these questions is YES too. 
 
The next three Sundays we are going to have a sermon series called, " The joy of using all of God's gifts to God's glory."   Too often we like to think of it all as things that we do, that we give and that we spend, as if the money, goods, talents, and time that God gives us were ours.  These things aren't ours.  Our God just gives them to us.  They are on loan from His hands to do with what he wishes. 
 
When the people heard what Jesus said, they laughed at Him, because they didn't know or recognize His power to bring the girl back to life.  We often laugh or smirk at God when he tells us to do things too.  "GIve 10%, you've got to be kidding me.  I've barely got enough to live on myself."  "There's no way I'd every volunteer to be on a board, I just don't think they would want me."  "Oh, you don't want me to sing.  I sound like a bellering calf."  "Pastor just doesn't understand, I just don't have time to make it to church.  I'm way too busy.  There is not enough time."  And the list goes on and on. 
 
Truth is that the same God who created the heavens and the earth, the same Jesus who raised Jairus's daughter, the same Holy Spirit who filled the hearts and mouths of the disciples at Pentecost so they could speak in all of the languages of the world is the same God who lives in you and works through you!  He uses you, because He wants you to experience the great joy that comes from working in his kingdom and using all His gifts to His glory!  GET TO IT AND DO IT TODAY!!
 
Prayer:  Lord God, please help me to use all your gifts to your glory so that I may experience the joy of it all!  Amen.

STEWARDSHIP SPOLIGHT FOR THE MONTH OF OCTOBER IS PATRIOT PACKAGES
As we all know, our military forces are still spread throughout the world.  Many of our loved ones are deployed and arond the world and on bases throughout our own country.  Ptriot Packages, formerly known as G4U "Goodies for You" is a small yet effective way that we can care for all those men and women in a very real and practical way.  A group of people get together once a month to fill care packages to send out.  These packages have very specific items that these soldiers request, that are scarce or nonexistent where they are. 

 

What they need from us is money so that they can buy the specific items they need.  As always, make checks payable to St. John's and in the memo line write "patriot Packages".  Also, as always, this should be above and beyond your regular offerings.

 For MARILYN FOSTER'S NIECE, HEATHER.  She has a very rare spine condition, which has resulted in a spinal fluid leak. They are trying for the 2nd time to do a "blood patch" to stop the leak. Yesterdays try was unsuccessful and they are going to try again today. The only specialist in the US that treats these conditions is out of town until next week, the doctor that is caring for her has only done 1 of these before.

 

For CHRISTIAN WENZEL, art teacher at Blackhawk Middle School, who fell out of his tree stand while deer hunting on Saturday and broke his sternum and many ribs.  He has many things wrong with him and is in critical condition in the hospital.

For MARY SUE TOEDEBUSCH as she recovers from a very bad infection and as she continues to deal with very bad rheumatoid arthritis and other health troubles. 

 

For BOB LAMPEN, Karin Klaustermeier's dad, as he has begun a new chemotherapy treatment.

  
For ED, neighbor to the Fosters, who found out he has cancer. 
 

For STEVE, a friend of Tony and Sandra Perricone, who is a husband, and a father of 2 and is undergoing tests for fluid on the brain.

 

For JOSIAH TULEY, great nephew of DIANNE HANCE'S friend Cindy Schwada.  Josiah is about 2 years old, a beautiful blonde with sparkling blue eyes.  This baby has a tumor
on his brain.  He seems to be doing very well and was moved out of the ICU this past weekend.

Josiah Update

Here's an update for Josiah, the little boy with a tumor on his brain.

My Story

Welcome to our CaringBridge site. We've created it to keep friends and family updated.  Nathan has written the background story, and as of now, Amy will be the one updating the journal entries.  Josiah will have surgery on October 3rd at University of MO Women's and Children's Hospital in Columbia, MO.

Our morning started off pretty slow, but ended in a hubbub of excitement. Josiah got up, had some cheerios, milk in a bottle and some oatmeal. He enjoyed a walk in the wagon and some time in the exersaucer, then was ready for bed again. Nathan and I both laid down for a quick nap as well. The doctor came in and said that all his levels were looking good and he was completely off the medicines they wanted him off of and doing well with that. Then the doctor said to unhook Josiah off of all the machines, and informed us we would be moving out of the PICU today! I took a quick shower and then started getting our things together. Josiah woke up and ate his lunch of mashed potatoes, vegetable soup (the broth made wonderful gravy for him,) corn and carrots. By the time we got him cleaned up and changed, they were ready for him to move. Nathan had left to go pick us up some lunch before we moved, but thankfully his mom was here and able to help. So we gathered up our (many) things and moved upstairs into a regular room. Although Josiah was exhausted from being up so long, he enjoyed the wagon ride, but it took him awhile to settle down to sleep once we got into the room.

While I was back downstairs getting the rest of our things, I met the CCH campus minster and his daughter, who had brought us communion for the day. They helped me gather the rest of our things and by the time we made it back to our room Nathan was there with our lunch. We ate lunch and put away our things. Nathan's sister came up and then my mom brought up our other kids and we all enjoyed playing together. When they all left it took Josiah another while to calm down and sleep, but after some tylenol he did quiet down. Nathan and I decided to take a nap as well; we were both tired, and weren't really sure how we would all sleep tonight. We're going to have a difficult time adjusting to being at home and on a different schedule as well!

I ordered Josiah supper while he was still sleeping, so he would have it when he woke up. The kitchen closes at 6:30, and while there are a few options available up here, thought he would enjoy some hot food tonight. When he woke up he ate and then we went to the playroom to play for a while. He seemed to enjoy the new scenery. He was up for quite awhile this evening, and wasn't really ready to go to bed, but he did finally settle down for the night. We went to bed too.

DEVOTION:  (from Lutheran Hour Ministries)
His invisible attributes, namely, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. Romans 1:20

Every judge who sits on the bench hears excuses. There are good excuses, bad excuses, terrible excuses, acceptable excuses and humorous excuses.
I'm not sure how to rate the excuse made by Anthony Tilley.

Let me tell you about Tilley. It was last Christmastime, and he broke into his girlfriend's house, smashed her television, stuck knives into her walls, and threw her Christmas tree out the door. Then he went and kicked in the door to her neighbor's house, too. The prosecutor said that Tilley intended to assault the neighbor.

Tilley was arrested for breaking and entering and intending to commit an indictable offense.

Anthony Tilley admits he did everything, but he has an excuse. That excuse is ... are you ready for this ... no, of course, you're not. Tilley's excuse is he was too drunk to know what he was doing.

But there's more.

Judge James Walsh, at least, in part, agreed with Tilley's excuse. He ruled that Tilley was so drunk there was reasonable doubt he could think clearly enough to commit the crime of assault on his neighbor. So the judge, at least in this area, found Tilley innocent because he was too drunk.

So, you tell me: is it a good excuse, bad excuse, silly excuse or sad? Maybe a bit of all?

I guess all that can be said is this: it is an excuse which worked ... at least in part.

Scripture is clear that when the Lord Jesus returns, He is not going to be receptive to people's excuses. You can certainly understand why. His entire life was lived so sinners might be forgiven and declared innocent on Judgment Day.

So we might be saved is why Jesus fulfilled both law and prophecy. So that we might be made right with God is why He said, "No!" to all of Satan's temptations. So we might be released from sin's condemnation, He picked up those sins and, along with His cross, carried them to Calvary. Then, when all else had been done, He defeated humankind's greatest enemy: death.

You can see why Jesus won't be looking for excuses on Judgment Day. He endured much so that we might have the free gift of eternal life. This is why, when too-late day comes, there will be no acceptable reason, no satisfactory excuse that will move Jesus to say, "What? You didn't want to believe in Me? Well, that's just fine; you just come on in to heaven anyway."

As we all know, our military forces are still spread throughout the world.  Many of our loved ones are deployed and arond the world and on bases throughout our own country.  Ptriot Packages, formerly known as G4U "Goodies for You" is a small yet effective way that we can care for all those men and women in a very real and practical way.  A group of people get together once a month to fill care packages to send out.  These packages have very specific items that these soldiers request, that are scarce or nonexistent where they are. 

 

What they need from us is money so that they can buy the specific items they need.  As always, make checks payable to St. John's and in the memo line write "patriot Packages".  Also, as always, this should be above and beyond your regular offerings.

For CHRISTIAN WENZEL, art teacher at Blackhawk Middle School, who fell out of his tree stand while deer hunting on Saturday and broke his sternum and many ribs.  He has many things wrong with him and is in critical condition in the hospital.

For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become accountable for all of it. James 2:10

Jeffrey McMullen is a regular patron of AmeriServ Bank in Northern Cambria, Pennsylvania.

That's why, when McMullen handed two of the bank's tellers a note that said he was robbing the bank and wanted them to fork over $1, they thought he was pulling their legs.

Not to be put off by the tellers' unbelief, McMullen left them and approached an employee who was working with new accounts. Once again he said he was holding up the bank, and he wanted them to cough up one single, solitary dollar.

Finally, there was nothing more to be done. The police were called and McMullen was arrested.

Although McMullen's case was interesting now it became bizarre, as it became clear he had held up the bank because he wanted to be tried in a federal court. Apparently, it was his hope he might be sentenced to the minimum security prison in Loretto, Pennsylvania. As of this writing, nobody is sure why McMullen wanted to go to Loretto.

One thing we are sure of is this: the judge didn't take McMullen's bank heist lightly. First, he must take a mental evaluation, and if he wishes to be free before his trial, he has to post a $50,000 bail.

While the story's finish may not be written for some time, I think we are seeing the words of James come true: "For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point is accountable for all of it." McMullen may have been a nice bank robber; he may have been a polite, non-threatening bank robber; but he is still a bank robber. And, barring unknown and extenuating circumstances, he may be tried and sentenced like a bank robber.

This, of course, is a lesson for us all. We may be nice sinners -- caring, compassionate and kind sinners -- but we are still sinners. We may only commit little, almost microscopic sins, but we still are sinners. We may have the best of intentions when we sin, but we are still sinners.

And the wages of sin is death. That's what Scripture says. Elsewhere it rephrases the idea when it says the soul which sins shall die. For sinners like you and me there is no psychiatric evaluation, there is no bail. The sentence must be eternal death and damnation.

At least the sentence should have been death and damnation. You see, for believers there are extenuating circumstances, no, not in the commission of the crime; of that, we are guilty. The extenuating circumstance is the crime has already been paid for, and the sentence has been served.

God's Son Jesus Christ came into this world to offer Himself as the Person who would carry our sins and defeat death. Because of what He has done, when the day comes that we appear before the Judge, He will tell us that since Jesus has paid for our sins, we are free to go to our eternal home in heaven.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, I give thanks that Jesus' blood-bought salvation has been given to me and cancels out my sin and its penalty. May those who think they are okay doing little, minor transgressions see clearly that to be guilty of the law in one part is to break it in all parts. Bring them to repentance and salvation, which comes from Jesus. In His Name. Amen.

McMullen may have been a nice bank robber; he may have been a polite, non-threatening bank robber; but he is still a bank robber. And, barring unknown and extenuating circumstances, he may be tried and sentenced like a bank robber.

This, of course, is a lesson for us all. We may be nice sinners -- caring, compassionate and kind sinners -- but we are still sinners. We may only commit little, almost microscopic sins, but we still are sinners. We may have the best of intentions when we sin, but we are still sinners.

And the wages of sin is death. That's what Scripture says. Elsewhere it rephrases the idea when it says the soul which sins shall die. For sinners like you and me there is no psychiatric evaluation, there is no bail. The sentence must be eternal death and damnation.

At least the sentence should have been death and damnation. You see, for believers there are extenuating circumstances, no, not in the commission of the crime; of that, we are guilty. The extenuating circumstance is the crime has already been paid for, and the sentence has been served.

God's Son Jesus Christ came into this world to offer Himself as the Person who would carry our sins and defeat death. Because of what He has done, when the day comes that we appear before the Judge, He will tell us that since Jesus has paid for our sins, we are free to go to our eternal home in heaven.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, I give thanks that Jesus' blood-bought salvation has been given to me and cancels out my sin and its penalty. May those who think they are okay doing little, minor transgressions see clearly that to be guilty of the law in one part is to break it in all parts. Bring them to repentance and salvation, which comes from Jesus. In His Name. Amen.

Question:  What do the Scriptures teach about the gift of the Holy Spirit?
Answer: The Scriptures teach that the Holy SPirit gives gifts to His church.  They teach that
 
a. the Holy Spirit through the Word and sacraments freely gives to all Christians the most precious gifts: faith in Christ, the forgiveness of sins, and eternal life;
b. in apostolic times the Holy Spirit also gave some Christians the gift to perform miraculous signs and wonders (for example, healings, speaking in tongues, raising the dead).
 
The Scriptures do not teach, however, that God will necessarily give all Christians in every time and place special miraculous gifts.  The Holy SPirit besotws His blessings according to His good pleasure.

CHRISTMAS PROGRAM IS BEING PRACTICED EVERY WEEK AT SUNDAY SCHOOL FROM NOW UNTIL THE PROGRAM

Hey kids and families!!!  If you want to participate in the Christmas program then you need to be at Sunday school.  The program was introduced this past Sunday, and will be practiced every Sunday during Sunday school opening from now until the day of the program.

This food gets put in children's backpacks on Friday afternoon before they go home for the weekend.  Kids are able to get breakfast and lunch every day of the week, but often have to go without food on weekends.  Please provide for our kids.  There is a coolection box in the preschool room.

 CIRCUIT REFORMATION SERVICE THIS SUNDAY OCTOBER 28 AT 2PM!!!!

 St. John's is hosting our 2nd annual circuit wide Reformation service on Sunday, October 28!!!  St Paul's, Jonesburg; St. Paul's, New Melle; Grace; Wellsville, Trinity, Wellsville; Christ, Augusta; Immanuel, Wentzville, and Trinity, Troy will all get together to join our voices and hearts in praising our Lord for His grace and truth which was exclaimed and brought back to the forefront during the Reformation! 

 

Come and join with the rest of your Lutheran brothers and sisters in Christ as we celebrate!!

 

Toni Schwartz is leading a mass choir that day!  The choir will practice at 1pm at church.

 "All Hallows Eve Chili & Hot Dog Supper" AND "Trunk or Treat" being held on Wednesday evening, October 31st at St. John's 

 

1.  WE NEED TRUNKS!!!  We need people to sign up to take up a parking spot for our TRUNK or TREAT!!  Call the office to reserve your spot!!!  456-2888

 

2.  WE NEED CANDY!!  We are asking for your help by donating any kind of bagged Halloween candy so we can assemble 160 bags of "treats" for our supper attendees!  We plan to assemble the bags on Monday, October 29th, so we need to have all the candy donations by no later than Sunday Oct. 28th.    We will put a box for the candy collection in the narthex marked "ALL HALLOWS EVE SUPPER".  

 

***Don't forget too that there is a pumpkin carving/decorating contest that night.  3 prize ribbons will be awarded for carved pumpkins that are brought to church ON Wed. Oct. 31 by 4 PM.  The will be for:  1.  The funniest    2.  The scariest    3.  The best

 

They will be used for centerpieces on the dinner tables!!  You may take your pumpkins home with you after the event ends at 8 PM.

STEWARDSHIP SPOLIGHT FOR THE MONTH OF OCTOBER IS PATRIOT PACKAGES
As we all know, our military forces are still spread throughout the world.  Many of our loved ones are deployed and arond the world and on bases throughout our own country.  Ptriot Packages, formerly known as G4U "Goodies for You" is a small yet effective way that we can care for all those men and women in a very real and practical way.  A group of people get together once a month to fill care packages to send out.  These packages have very specific items that these soldiers request, that are scarce or nonexistent where they are. 

 

What they need from us is money so that they can buy the specific items they need.  As always, make checks payable to St. John's and in the memo line write "patriot Packages".  Also, as always, this should be above and beyond your regular offerings.

Yesterdays try was unsuccessful and they are going to try again today. The only specialist in the US that treats these conditions is out of town until next week, the doctor that is caring for her has only done 1 of these before.

 

For CHRISTIAN WENZEL, art teacher at Blackhawk Middle School, who fell out of his tree stand while deer hunting on Saturday and broke his sternum and many ribs.  He has many things wrong with him and is in critical condition in the hospital.

For MARY SUE TOEDEBUSCH as she recovers from a very bad infection and as she continues to deal with very bad rheumatoid arthritis and other health troubles. 

 

For BOB LAMPEN, Karin Klaustermeier's dad, as he begins a new chemotherapy treatment next Week.

For STEVE, a friend of Tony and Sandra Perricone, who is a husband, and a father of 2 and is undergoing tests for fluid on the brain.

on his brain.
