DEVOTION:  Isaiah 40:21-31 English Standard Version (ESV)

21 Do you not know? Do you not hear?
    Has it not been told you from the beginning?
    Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth?
22 It is he who sits above the circle of the earth,
    and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers;
who stretches out the heavens like a curtain,
    and spreads them like a tent to dwell in;
23 who brings princes to nothing,
    and makes the rulers of the earth as emptiness.

24 Scarcely are they planted, scarcely sown,
    scarcely has their stem taken root in the earth,
when he blows on them, and they wither,
    and the tempest carries them off like stubble.

25 To whom then will you compare me,
    that I should be like him? says the Holy One.
26 Lift up your eyes on high and see:
    who created these?
He who brings out their host by number,
    calling them all by name;
by the greatness of his might
    and because he is strong in power,
    not one is missing.

27 Why do you say, O Jacob,
    and speak, O Israel,
"My way is hidden from the Lord,
    and my right is disregarded by my God"?
28 Have you not known? Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
    the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He does not faint or grow weary;
    his understanding is unsearchable.
29 He gives power to the faint,
    and to him who has no might he increases strength.
30 Even youths shall faint and be weary,
    and young men shall fall exhausted;
31 but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength;
    they shall mount up with wings like eagles;
they shall run and not be weary;
    they shall walk and not faint.

What does it mean to "wait for the Lord"?  Does it mean wait for the Lord to return?  Does it simply mean wait for the Lord to do something for you?  Actually "wait" and "Hope" come from the same root word in Hebrew, and if you think about it, they kind of mean the same thing, or at least they should when it comes to Jesus.

                When we, as Americans, think of the word "hope" it often means that we want it to happen but it might or it might not actually happen.  Hope is more of a wish than a certainty for us.  For the people in Isaiah's day and even in Jesus' day, hope was more of a certainty.  Hoping for something was the same as waiting for something.  So when the Bible says that we should hope in the Lord, it isn't something that may or may not happen.  It's a certainty.  Therefore in our passage above, those who wait "hope" for the Lord WILL renew their strength.  It simply is not a matter of if but of when.

                Sometimes you have to wait longer than others.  Sometimes you may wonder what is taking God so long.  Sometimes you may even get angry with God for not taking care of things in your time but his.  Whatever the case, know that God's promises are certain.  He WILL renew your strength.  You will mount up on with wings like eagles.  You will run and not grow weary.  You will walk and not faint.

                The ultimate fulfillment of this promise will come on the day the Lord Jesus takes you to be with him forever.  After that time there will be no more waiting for the Lord, because all of his promises will be fulfilled in the present time for you and you will be with him forever.

Lord, thank you for making me wait for you.  Make me to be sure of your promises and confident that you will fulfill all of them in your own time and in your own way.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ:

What was a tabernacle?

From Don Nolte- It was the tent of Jehovah, or movable sanctuary which Moses was directed to erect in the wilderness.  It could be easily taken down and erected during the Israelites wanderings.

From Pat King- Oh! I know this! And no, Sandy, it is NOT because I helped build the first one.

Anyway, it was a portable place of worship. Sort of a mobile home church. It was first built – using God's precise instructions - during the time of the Exodus, when the Jews were wandering around in the desert, looking for the Promised Land.

You can read about it on Wiki, if you want more info. But, if you really want to know about it, there is a PDF you can download at this link: http://netbiblestudy.com/00_cartimages/Tab-Lesson%205.pdf

NEWS:

RETIREMENT SEMINARS AVAILABLE.  WHO IS INTERESTED?

Denny Hagan from eldercare associates would like to know how many people would be interested in attending one or more of the following seminars if he were to come out to St. John's to do them.

  1. Identity theft. With tax season coming, this is a serious concern to not only seniors, but to everybody that has a Social Security Number. As a matter of fact, the most profitable Information on the net, is for children. It takes much longer to catch the issue, due to lack of use of the children's numbers.

  1. Changes in how Medicare Part B, is billed to Seniors, It is more important than ever that one takes the time to plan their retirement. Medicare part B is billed based on one's income, and to make it even more confusing, it is based on your income of 2 years ago.  Now, before we start scaring anybody, If they are already receiving benefits, this new rule, will not apply. All of these rules, are changes in Social Security.

  1. Understanding Social Security: how to get all that is coming to you and making the most of it.

If anyone is interested in any of these, please let me know, and if we get enough people interested, we will get Denny to come out and do a presentation.

DEVOTION:  Psalm 147:1-11  English Standard Version (ESV)

He Heals the Brokenhearted

147 Praise the Lord!
For it is good to sing praises to our God;
    for it is pleasant,[a] and a song of praise is fitting.
The Lord builds up Jerusalem;
    he gathers the outcasts of Israel.
He heals the brokenhearted
    and binds up their wounds.
He determines the number of the stars;
    he gives to all of them their names.
Great is our Lord, and abundant in power;
    his understanding is beyond measure.
The Lord lifts up the humble;[b]
    he casts the wicked to the ground.

Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving;
    make melody to our God on the lyre!
He covers the heavens with clouds;
    he prepares rain for the earth;
    he makes grass grow on the hills.
He gives to the beasts their food,
    and to the young ravens that cry.
10 His delight is not in the strength of the horse,
    nor his pleasure in the legs of a man,
11 but the Lord takes pleasure in those who fear him,
    in those who hope in his steadfast love.

I know a lot of people who are walking around with broken hearts right now.  In fact, I think we live in an age of a broken heart epidemic.  There are a lot of hurting, sad, and broken people out there.  There are those who have lost loved one, those who have had their marriages torn apart, those whose parents have abused or abandoned them, those who have been sexually abused or harassed.  I could go on and on with a list of how people are broken hearted.

        We can either dwell on that list and let them stay broken, or we can do something about it.  We can turn to Jesus for what we need!  It simply requires a heart that is willing to be turned, and the means by which to turn. The Holy Spirit has given you both.  He has given you the will to turn, and the means of grace by which he makes you able to turn.

        There is so much encouragement and peace in these verses!  God takes you and puts the salve of his mercy on your wounds.  He bandages you up with his grace and forgiveness.  He lifts you up with His joy and peace!  He cares for you and restores your broken heart!  He alone can truly do it!  Trust in him!  Believe in his power!  Have life in his name!

Prayer: Lord, heal my broken heart.  Help me not to continue to rehearse and dwell on my past hurts and offenses, but to live a new and free life in your mercy and grace so that others may see our joy and glorify you!  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ:  What were they to do with the lamb at the first Passover?

From Pat King: Well, duh! Eat it! With a nice jelly sauce. Here's a link of Seder meal for dummies: http://www.dummies.com/education/holidays/the-symbolic-foods-at-a-passover-seder/

But,seriously, the Korban Pesakh – aka: sacrifice of Passover or Paschal Lamb – was ritually slaughtered on the eve of Passover, then eaten on the first night of the holiday with certain herbs and matzo. In the original Passover, the blood of the lamb was smeared on the door post, so that the Angel of Death would "pass over" that home and spare the family. You guys can read all about this on Jewish sites.

Anyway, today, Jews don't do the whole slaughter thingie – PETA would throw a fit – but apparently it is still done on Mt. Gerizim by those pesky Samaritans.

DEVOTION:  Mark 1:21-28 English Standard Version (ESV)

Jesus Heals a Man with an Unclean Spirit

21 And they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath he entered the synagogue and was teaching. 22 And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes. 23 And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, 24 "What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God." 25 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be silent, and come out of him!" 26 And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying out with a loud voice, came out of him. 27 And they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, "What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him." 28 And at once his fame spread everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee.

Jesus has power, more power than the president, more power than the biggest truck engine there is, more power than your mom.  He has ultimate power.  When he says something, not only do people listen, but stuff happen.  He commanded this unclean spirit to come out of the man.  In a different passage he turned water into wine.  In yet another passage he raised Lazarus from the dead.  The most important thing for us that he did was defeat the devil, death, and hell by his death on the cross and his resurrection from the dead.

            The Scriptures don't lie.  They have been proven over and over again from generation to generation.  It's your choice whether you believe it or not, I suggest you do, but it's still your choice.  That's how powerful Jesus is, he can do all that he has done for you and still give you a choice as to whether you accept it or not.

            I encourage and urge you to believe and trust in Jesus today!  If he can really do all that he did in the Bible, he can certainly forgive all your stupidity, selfishness, and sins, and bring you to eternal life with him!

Prayer: Lord, thank you for using your power to save me and all believers.  Help me to trust in you more and more each day.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ:  How many times did Pharaoh agree to let the Israelites go out of Egypt to worship the Lord only to take it back?

From Pat KingPharaoh promised Moses 10 times they could leave, then changing his mind at the last minute. Actually, the dude knew he wasn't going to let them high-tail it out of town when he made all those promises. It was just typical political double-talk. So, they had it, even back then.

From Don Nolte: I think it was 9 times that Pharaoh changed his mind.

PRAYERS FOR OUR MILITARY PERSONNEL:

For COLTON FIGURA deployed to Turkey, SAM HARGROVE deployed in Kuwait and DAN DREYER deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan, that the Lord would keep them safe from harm during their service and bring them home safely.

For DAVID TATE stationed in Japan, and ALEX WALTERS, stationed in Tennessee.  That God would bless their service to our country and keep them safe as they all await possible deployment.
