DEVOTION: Psalm 147:1-11 English Standard Version (ESV)
He Heals the Brokenhearted
147 Praise the Lord!
For it is good to sing praises to our God;
for it is pleasant,[a] and a song of praise is fitting.
2 The Lord builds up Jerusalem;
he gathers the outcasts of Israel.
3 He heals the brokenhearted
and binds up their wounds.
4 He determines the number of the stars;
he gives to all of them their names.
5 Great is our Lord, and abundant in power;
his understanding is beyond measure.
6 The Lord lifts up the humble;[b]
he casts the wicked to the ground.
7 Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving;
make melody to our God on the lyre!
8 He covers the heavens with clouds;
he prepares rain for the earth;
he makes grass grow on the hills.
9 He gives to the beasts their food,
and to the young ravens that cry.
10 His delight is not in the strength of the horse,
nor his pleasure in the legs of a man,
11 but the Lord takes pleasure in those who fear him,
in those who hope in his steadfast love.
I know a lot of people who are walking around with broken hearts right now. In fact, I think we live in an age of a broken heart epidemic. There are a lot of hurting, sad, and broken people out there. There are those who have lost loved one, those who have had their marriages torn apart, those whose parents have abused or abandoned them, those who have been sexually abused or harassed. I could go on and on with a list of how people are broken hearted.
We can either dwell on that list and let them stay broken, or we can do something about it. We can turn to Jesus for what we need! It simply requires a heart that is willing to be turned, and the means by which to turn. The Holy Spirit has given you both. He has given you the will to turn, and the means of grace by which he makes you able to turn.
There is so much encouragement and peace in these verses! God takes you and puts the salve of his mercy on your wounds. He bandages you up with his grace and forgiveness. He lifts you up with His joy and peace! He cares for you and restores your broken heart! He alone can truly do it! Trust in him! Believe in his power! Have life in his name!
Prayer: Lord, heal my broken heart. Help me not to continue to rehearse and dwell on my past hurts and offenses, but to live a new and free life in your mercy and grace so that others may see our joy and glorify you! Amen.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ: What were they to do with the lamb at the first Passover?
From Pat King: Well, duh! Eat it! With a nice jelly sauce. Here's a link of Seder meal for dummies: http://www.dummies.com/education/holidays/the-symbolic-foods-at-a-passover-seder/
But,seriously, the Korban Pesakh – aka: sacrifice of Passover or Paschal Lamb – was ritually slaughtered on the eve of Passover, then eaten on the first night of the holiday with certain herbs and matzo. In the original Passover, the blood of the lamb was smeared on the door post, so that the Angel of Death would "pass over" that home and spare the family. You guys can read all about this on Jewish sites.
Anyway, today, Jews don't do the whole slaughter thingie – PETA would throw a fit – but apparently it is still done on Mt. Gerizim by those pesky Samaritans.

NEWS:
RETIREMENT SEMINARS AVAILABLE. WHO IS INTERESTED?
Denny Hagan from eldercare associates would like to know how many people would be interested in attending one or more of the following seminars if he were to come out to St. John's to do them.
- Identity theft. With tax season coming, this is a serious concern to not only seniors, but to everybody that has a Social Security Number. As a matter of fact, the most profitable Information on the net, is for children. It takes much longer to catch the issue, due to lack of use of the children's numbers.
- Changes in how Medicare Part B, is billed to Seniors, It is more important than ever that one takes the time to plan their retirement. Medicare part B is billed based on one's income, and to make it even more confusing, it is based on your income of 2 years ago. Now, before we start scaring anybody, If they are already receiving benefits, this new rule, will not apply. All of these rules, are changes in Social Security.
- Understanding Social Security: how to get all that is coming to you and making the most of it.
If anyone is interested in any of these, please let me know, and if we get enough people interested, we will get Denny to come out and do a presentation.
