Professional Church Workers' Conference

The Missouri District's Professional Church Workers' Conference themed "The Reformation: What Does This Mean for Today?" was held Nov. 14-17, 2017 at Tan-Tar-A Resort in Osage Beach, MO.

During the conference, nearly 600 district pastors, educators and commissioned LCMS workers built relationships and encouraged one another through worship and fellowship. Attendees heard plenary sessions by Drs. Erik Hermann, Patrick Ferry and Jon Mielke, along with a variety of informative sectionals and continuing education experiences. One of the highlights was the worship service on Thursday morning hosted by Trinity in Altenburg and Concordia in Frohna and featuring the Perry County Lutheran Chorale.

Senior High District Youth Gathering A Big Hit!

More than 150 Missouri District youth and adult leaders gathered at Crosspointe Camp in Rocky Mount, Mo. the district's first ever Fall Sr. High District Youth Gathering.

The theme for the weekend was "Filtered" and the students explored Ephesians 4 and how they view the world. The first session was led by DCE Aaron Hansen, who helped the youth consider how the filters that they view the world through shape their perceptions, and how they could view the world through the filter of a disciple of Jesus.

LCMS Rural and Small Town Mission Conference

The LCMS Rural and Small Town Mission Conference was held November 9-11 in Kansas City, Missouri. There were attendees from seven congregations across the district, including two recent seminary graduates.

"I felt that I needed to go to the RSTM conference because I myself serve a small town parish in Northeast Missouri. Having just been installed in July, I wanted to learn from other rural or small town pastors because I know I need to learn a lot in how to best serve my people. I grew up in rural parish, and I am accustomed to some of the same things that rural life brings with it. However, the conference gave me an opportunity to see how other pastors work and live in other rural settings. Not all rural settings are the same and to learn that early on is important. I wanted to receive great teaching and ideas of how to make myself the best pastor I can be for the people God has placed in my care. The best way I know how to do that is learn from fellow brothers in similar rural settings," stated Rev .Jacob Hercamp of St. Peter Lutheran Church, La Grange, Mo.

The conference included Rev. Dr. Greg Seltz as the Bible Study leader. The plenary sessions and sectionals were geared to help pastors and lay leaders to better understand small town communities today. From sessions on teaching of youth and adults to partnerships and lay leadership development, the conference is a popular resource for rural and small town congregations. The conference will return again to Kansas City in 2018. Watch

DEVOTION: Matthew 25:31-46English Standard Version (ESV)

The Final Judgment

31 "When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. 34 Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.35 For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.' 37 Then the righteous will answer him, saying, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink?38 And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? 39 And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?'40 And the King will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers,[a] you did it to me.'

41 "Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.' 44 Then they also will answer, saying, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?' 45 Then he will answer them, saying, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.'46 And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."

I've always had trouble explaining this passage, because at first glance it looks like Jesus is telling us that we have to do good works to get into heaven.  This isn't true, but that's the way it looks.  One important thing to remember here is good works always follow faith.  The other important thing to remember is that the Christian who does them, doesn't even realize he is doing them.  He does them automatically without ever even thinking about how he will gain points with God.  He also does them out of love for God and not obligation. He does them out of response for what Christ has already done for him on the cross.  That's the difference.  Works follow faith.

No faith, no works.  That's what Jesus is getting at here.  The goats are the one who may have works that the world sees as good, but since they are done without a heart of faith, God doesn't see them as good.  All our own righteousness, our own good deeds, done apart from faith are nothing but filthy rags in God's sight.  He doesn't even acknowledge them or the people who do them.

At the same time, we must always remember that it isn't our deeds that will get us past the gates and into heaven.  It is trust in Christ and in the work of the Holy Spirit in us that brings us to and keeps us in the faith!  It is all God's work!  We must always remember that, and thank the Lord for working in us the good works that we will do.

Thank the Lord for all his blessings today and tomorrow!  Thank him that he has given you this land in which to live.  Thank him that he provides for your daily bread.  Thank him that he provides daily works for you to do.  Most importantly, thank him for the gift of his Son, our Savior Jesus!

Prayer: Lord God, thank you for everything.  Amen.

VOTER'S MEETING RESULTS FROM SUNDAY

  1. The voters nominated President Lee Hagan for district president and VP Ron Rall for another term.
  2. The voters voted to keep the same mission project, Rev.. Micah and Dorothy Glenn in North County, for 2018.
  3. Larry Schulze, Jim McRae, and Teresa Brockfeld all volunteered to be on the board of trustees!  Thank you to these three volunteers!
  4. We are still in need of two board members for the board of education, and four members for the board of elders.
  5. The voters approved the budget for 2018.  Thanks to Alan Hofeldt for putting it together.
  6. Since we continuously have trouble filling our boards and committees and since things could be done a whole lot better and more efficiently with a different structure, the voters approved the appointing of a task force to study changes to our governance structure so that we can tap into all the unused potential, so that people who want to do good in the congregation don't have to commit to boards and committees for 9 years, and so that the work of the church can be disbursed among those who actually want to do it!  PRAISE THE LORD!!
  7. The voters approved changing the overflow accordion door to a permanent wall with doors and windows in it to convert the overflow to a cry room.
  8. The voter's also approved a budget of $450,000 for our building project so that we can move forward with hiring an architect.

As you can see, a lot is getting done in and around St. John's.  It may be slow going at times, but God is definitely moving!  I'm excited to see what God has in store for 2018!!  It's gonna be a great year watching A LOT of people come to Christ and become members of St. John's!  If you'd like to volunteer for our task force to look into structure changes, please reply to this email.  Please look for lots of wonderful stuff to be happening in the near future, and PRAY, PRAY, PRAY for St. John's that we can grow in making disciples in, out and together!!

DEVOTION:  1 Corinthians 15:20-28  English Standard Version (ESV)

20 But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. 23 But each in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ. 24 Then comes the end, when he delivers the kingdom to God the Father after destroying every rule and every authority and power.25 For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet.26 The last enemy to be destroyed is death. 27 For "God[a] has put all things in subjection under his feet." But when it says, "all things are put in subjection," it is plain that he is excepted who put all things in subjection under him. 28 When all things are subjected to him, then the Son himself will also be subjected to him who put all things in subjection under him, that God may be all in all.

What a glorious and peace giving thought this is from the Apostle Paul this morning!  It is peace giving for us.  Those who are in the dark…. not so much.  But that's the thing, they're in the dark so they don't see it coming.  They are just going about living their lives in the dark, aimlessly wandering around looking for food, drink, and whatever else their bodies and minds desire to give them a little fleeting comfort.  It is a sad way to live if you ask me.

I'd rather be in the light. I'm looking forward to the end.  As much as I try to cling to this life and try to keep myself and others alive, I am looking forward to the day when it will all come to an end and the Lord Jesus will usher in the prefect life 'that he died for!  I'm looking forward to the end of these aches and pains, these sorrows and heartaches, this death filled life.  I'm so looking forward to Jesus coming back that I can hardly stand it sometimes.

Yet, he is patient with me, with us, not wanting anyone to perish, but all to come to a knowledge of the truth. If you are wondering why Jesus hasn't returned yet, all you need to do is look around you at all the people who have yet to come to faith.  Look at all the people who need to hear the Gospel; the love, forgiveness, grace, and peace for Jesus!  Then, if you want Jesus to return, get back to the business of sharing the good news of the love of Christ!  Get back to being the Christian God wants you to be.  Repent!  Turn from your sins!  Turn from your inactivity.  Turn from all the things that are entangling you and causing you grief, turn to Christ and let the love of Christ flow over you!

Prayer: Lord, thank you for being patient with us.  Help us to be bold in our proclamation of the Gospel and help us to get to work in the business of making disciples.  Amen.
