DEVOTION:  Romans 13:1-10  English Standard Version (ESV)

Submission to the Authorities

13 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, for he is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God's wrath on the wrongdoer. Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God's wrath but also for the sake of conscience. For because of this you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, attending to this very thing. Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed.

Fulfilling the Law Through Love

Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. For the commandments, "You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet," and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." 10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

I love this passage, because it speaks to many of the current struggles in our society so much.   If you do what is right and love others you will be free from guilt.  You may not always be treated the way you should, but at least you won't have to have that fear of shame and guilt.  You won't be constantly looking over your shoulder waiting for someone to catch you and convict you.

It's very simple, all the commandments can be summed up in two sentences.  Commandments 1-3 can be summed up with, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength."  Commandments 4-10 can be summed up with, "Love your neighbor as yourself."  It's that simple.

If you love God, you won't have any other gods, you won't use God's name wrongly, and you will be in worship.

If you love your parents and authorities you will do what they say as long as what they say isn't against God's will.  If you love your spouse, you will be committed to him/her as long as you both shall live.  If you love your neighbor, you won't try to harm him/her in his/her body, you won't try to get what is theirs, you won't talk about them in a wrong way, and you won't covet what is rightly theirs.

Very simple, right?  Yet, we aren't perfect and so we break the commandments.  After the breaking of these commandments and the guilt that comes with it, we have the greatest opportunity for love as we forgive if we were the one sinned against, and ask for forgiveness if we were the one who sinned.  Hard to do, but when you do it you will have the greatest satisfaction and peace that God can give.

I encourage you to love everyone today!  Love your enemies!  Love your neighbors!  You're your family!  Love God!

Prayer: Lord help me to love the way you want me to love.  Amen.

Pastor's weight loss journey and donations

You may remember that back in April I pledged to lose weight throughout the Summer till September 1. Some of you pledged so much per pound toward one of three charities: either Leadachild, Pregnancy Options Center of Warren County, or Warren County Literacy Inc.

As you may remember, my goal was 100lbs.  Well…. I didn't make my goal.  I lost 38lbs.   I'm a little bit disappointed in myself to say the least, as I expected a whole lot more, but circumstances and my own weak mind and body, kept me from my total goal.

The good news is that I'm not quitting.  I am continuing my weight loss journey and I plan on hitting it hard from now till the end of the year (and beyond).  My goal is still 100lbs. total by the end of the year.

So here's the deal:

  1. You can donate whatever you pledged right now and be done with it.
  2. You can wait till Reformation Day (Halloween for you non Lutherans) when I plan to be down at least 70lbs. total. (16lbs lost in Sept and 16 lost in Oct.)
  3. You can wait till the end of the year and donate then, when I plan to be at my goal weight of 100lbs lost.

  1. You can donate at all three times or whenever you feel like it.

Some of you have already sent in your donation.  That's not a problem.   I appreciate your donation!

I also appreciate your prayers and your encouragement!!  Keep them coming!

DEVOTION:   Ezekiel 33:7-9  English Standard Version (ESV)

"So you, son of man, I have made a watchman for the house of Israel. Whenever you hear a word from my mouth, you shall give them warning from me. If I say to the wicked, O wicked one, you shall surely die, and you do not speak to warn the wicked to turn from his way, that wicked person shall die in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at your hand. But if you warn the wicked to turn from his way, and he does not turn from his way, that person shall die in his iniquity, but you will have delivered your soul.

Whoa, that's some serious stuff.  Does God really mean that it is Ezekiel's fault if he doesn't preach the warning God has called him to preach and those who were supposed to hear it die in their iniquity? Answer: YES!

This is the burden not just of a preacher (pastor), but of all those who know the truth and have been given opportunity to care for a brother or sister who is hurting themselves in their sin, or who is in danger of losing faith all together, and does nothing about it.  It is truly a burden of love for the neighbor that our Holy Spirit gives to us by faith.

A lot of times we keep ourselves from speaking the truth in love, because we don't want to hurt someone's feelings or lose a friend all together.  We want to keep that friendship so we keep from warning a person that what they are doing is harmful to their soul.

The question we should then ask ourselves is do we want to lose that friend forever in hell?  So then we should always speak the truth, but speak it always in LOVE!  If you had a growth on your back that you couldn't see or feel, that was cancerous, would you want someone to point it out to you even though you'd be embarrassed, or would you want the person to spare you the embarrassment and then die from cancer?

Let us pray: Lord, thank you for sending people into our lives to speak the truth when I need to hear it.  Make me a person who loves someone enough to speak the truth to them and save their life.  Amen.
