DEVOTION:  Romans 13:1-10  English Standard Version (ESV)

Submission to the Authorities

13 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, for he is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God's wrath on the wrongdoer. Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God's wrath but also for the sake of conscience. For because of this you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, attending to this very thing. Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed.

Fulfilling the Law Through Love

Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. For the commandments, "You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet," and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." 10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

I love this passage, because it speaks to many of the current struggles in our society so much.   If you do what is right and love others you will be free from guilt.  You may not always be treated the way you should, but at least you won't have to have that fear of shame and guilt.  You won't be constantly looking over your shoulder waiting for someone to catch you and convict you.

It's very simple, all the commandments can be summed up in two sentences.  Commandments 1-3 can be summed up with, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength."  Commandments 4-10 can be summed up with, "Love your neighbor as yourself."  It's that simple.

If you love God, you won't have any other gods, you won't use God's name wrongly, and you will be in worship.

If you love your parents and authorities you will do what they say as long as what they say isn't against God's will.  If you love your spouse, you will be committed to him/her as long as you both shall live.  If you love your neighbor, you won't try to harm him/her in his/her body, you won't try to get what is theirs, you won't talk about them in a wrong way, and you won't covet what is rightly theirs.

Very simple, right?  Yet, we aren't perfect and so we break the commandments.  After the breaking of these commandments and the guilt that comes with it, we have the greatest opportunity for love as we forgive if we were the one sinned against, and ask for forgiveness if we were the one who sinned.  Hard to do, but when you do it you will have the greatest satisfaction and peace that God can give.

I encourage you to love everyone today!  Love your enemies!  Love your neighbors!  You're your family!  Love God!

Prayer: Lord help me to love the way you want me to love.  Amen.
