DEVOTION:  Genesis 4:1-16 (ESV)
"Cain and Abel"

Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying, "I have gotten[a] a man with the help of the Lord." And again, she bore his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, and Cain a worker of the ground. In the course of time Cain brought to the Lord an offering of the fruit of the ground, and Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions. And the Lord had regard for Abel and his offering, but for Cain and his offering he had no regard. So Cain was very angry, and his face fell. The Lord said to Cain, "Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen? If you do well, will you not be accepted?[b] And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is contrary to[c] you, but you must rule over it."

Cain spoke to Abel his brother.[d] And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him. Then the Lord said to Cain, "Where is Abel your brother?" He said, "I do not know; am I my brother's keeper?" 10 And the Lord said, "What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood is crying to me from the ground. 11 And now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand. 12 When you work the ground, it shall no longer yield to you its strength. You shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth." 13 Cain said to the Lord, "My punishment is greater than I can bear.[e] 14 Behold, you have driven me today away from the ground, and from your face I shall be hidden. I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me." 15 Then the Lord said to him, "Not so! If anyone kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold." And the Lord put a mark on Cain, lest any who found him should attack him. 16 Then Cain went away from the presence of the Lord and settled in the land of Nod,[f] east of Eden

Evidently, Abel gave his offering from the heart and Cain just out of obligation.  How much off your day do you spend doing things out of obligation instead of doing it with the sense of honoring the Lord with your heart?  Probably a lot, right?  I know I do.

We are all sinful like Cain.  Yet, because the Holy Spirit lives in us we are able to serve the Lord with our heart.  Our offerings, therefore, can and should be given with the heart.  2 Corinthians 9:7 says "Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."

If you decide in your heart to not giving an offering at all, that's so much worse, because then you have no joy in your heart toward God.

Cain hated God and so he took it out on his brother.  He had no love for God.  He had no regard for God so God had no regard for him.  When God convicted Cain of his sin, Cain finally repented, and God gave him grace.  Cain was afraid that someone would take revenge on him and kill him, but God put a mark on him so no one would.  We don't know what the mark was, maybe it was the first tattoo, maybe it was a big birthmark, we don't know.  Whatever it was, when people saw it, they knew not to harm Cain.

God has marked us too by baptism and through His Word and Sacraments.  We are marked for eternal life.   Satan cannot harm us.  Praise the Lord!

Prayer: Lord, thank you for marking us even though we don't deserve it.  Make us to give generously and with a joyful heart, because that is the kind of offering you regard and accept.  Amen.

DEVOTION: Psalm 5  "To the choirmaster: for the flutes. A Psalm of David."

Give ear to my words, O Lord;
    consider my groaning.
Give attention to the sound of my cry,
    my King and my God,
    for to you do I pray.
O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice;
    in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you[a] and watch.

For you are not a God who delights in wickedness;
    evil may not dwell with you.
The boastful shall not stand before your eyes;
    you hate all evildoers.
You destroy those who speak lies;
    the Lord abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man.

But I, through the abundance of your steadfast love,
    will enter your house.
I will bow down toward your holy temple
    in the fear of you.
Lead me, O Lord, in your righteousness
    because of my enemies;
    make your way straight before me.

For there is no truth in their mouth;
    their inmost self is destruction;
their throat is an open grave;
    they flatter with their tongue.
10 Make them bear their guilt, O God;
    let them fall by their own counsels;
because of the abundance of their transgressions cast them out,
    for they have rebelled against you.

11 But let all who take refuge in you rejoice;
    let them ever sing for joy,
and spread your protection over them,
    that those who love your name may exult in you.
12 For you bless the righteous, O Lord;
    you cover him with favor as with a shield.

In this passage we see a definite contrast between those who trust in the Lord and those who trust in themselves, between the Lord's will and way and the world's will and way.

The trouble is that we live in both.  We live in Christ and in the world.  We are free in Christ, but still able to be tempted.  We are not of the world, but we still live in the world.  I guess, in this way, we are experiencing what Christ experienced, although imperfectly.  Christ lived in this world and was tempted in every way, but al2ways resisted and never fell into temptation.  We fall into temptation on a constant and continual basis.

With God those two things cannot dwell together.  There cannot be evil and righteousness in the presence of Almighty God.  He doesn't allow evil to  exist in his presence!

So we cry out to God and say "Lead me, O Lord, in Your righteousness."  and "Make your way straight before me."  We ask God to do this for us while we are here on earth so that we can live in Him and rest in His grace until the day we receive the blessings and benefits of the victory that has already been won.  Until then, take refuge in Him, rejoice in Him and sing for joy, because the victory is already yours in Christ alone.

Let us pray:  As I have one foot in heaven and one on earth, keep me safe from my enemy, the devil, give me joy and peace while I survive in this world, and take me home to you as soon as you see fit, according to your will.  Amen.

DEVOTION:  Luke 18:1-8  (ESV)

"The Parable of the Persistent Widow"

18 And he told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart. He said, "In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor respected man. And there was a widow in that city who kept coming to him and saying, 'Give me justice against my adversary.' For a while he refused, but afterward he said to himself, 'Though I neither fear God nor respect man, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will give her justice, so that she will not beat me down by her continual coming.'" And the Lord said, "Hear what the unrighteous judge says. And will not God give justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them? I tell you, he will give justice to them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?"

A lot of people misunderstand this parable.  They think that Jesus is saying that the more you bug Jesus, the more you are "persistent" in your prayers, the more likely God is to answer you.  As if you can nag Jesus into giving you what you want.  That's not what this passage is about.  It's about the goodness, mercy, and grace of Jesus.

Sometimes, according to our timing, God seems to take longer to give us the justice, mercy, and help that we need.  It isn't that God is taking too long, God's timing is always perfect.  It's that he even in his timing he is giving you what you need.  It may be a lesson in patience that you need.  It may be a "toughening up" through suffering that you need.  It may be a breaking down so that you repent that you need. It may be that you suffering leads to physical death which will ultimately lead to eternal life.  God is ALWAYS working everything out for your good.

So don't quit praying.  Keep your conversations with God going, but realize that God speaks back to you in His Word.  You need to have your ears open.  If you try to talk to someone on the phone but don't have the receiver anywhere near your ear, you're not going to hear the person on the other end.  If you have your ear pressed up to the phone you'll hear a whole lot better.

Have your ear pressed up to God's Word while you talk to Him in prayer.  Listen intently to what He has to say to you.  When you do, you will realize that, even though he may not be blessing you in the way you want, He is truly blessing you in an even better way, and you will have that peace that passes all understanding!

Prayer:  Lord, bless me through my prayers.  Help me to not give up, but to trust that You are working everything out for my good and Your glory.  Amen.

DEVOTION:  2 Timothy 3:14-4:5  (ESV)
14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom[a] you learned it 15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God[b] may be complete, equipped for every good work.

I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. For the time is coming when people will not endure sound[c] teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.

It used to be that most people liked to hear the TRUTH, the whole TRUTH, and nothing but the TRUTH; but it doesn't seem as though that is the case anymore.  The truth is that it hasn't necessarily been the way it is for a very long time.  Even back in Paul's day, as he is writing to Timothy, there were people who "will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths."

What about you?  Do you balk at every time someone tries to give you advice, or even worse, when someone tells you that you are dong something wrong, that you are a SINNER?

Oh no, I used that word "sinner".   Did you cringe when you saw that word?  Did you turn off your ears?  Are you looking for a different devotion to read, someone who tell you that you are a good person, that everything is fine, and that God will let you into heaven because you are good enough?

The trouble is that those things are NOT the truth!  If you want to hear or read the truth, you will hear it from me and you will read it in these devotions.   If you want to hear something that might make you feel good, but is far from the truth go somewhere else.

The truth is that you and I, and every human being, is a sinner.  We would have been doomed to eternal death and destruction if it had not been for the Lord God having mercy on us and sending His one and only Son, Jesus to live a perfect life, suffer, die, and rise again.  Jesus took our place on the cross, because God, in His infinite wisdom, knew that we couldn't pay the price ourselves.

Live in that truth!  Live in that peace!  Live in that TRUE JOY today!  Stop only listening to people and to preachers who will tell you what you want to hear.  Listen to people who will tell you the truth even when it's not nice, even when you don't want to hear it.

You're a sinner and you're saved by grace through faith!  That's the TRUTH!

Prayer: Lord, bless us with preachers and teachers who will tell us the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.  Amen.
