Salt and Light
Taken from the Septembr 2016 LCMS Rural & Small Town Mission Newsletter
Contributed by Rev. Todd Kollbaum, Director, LCMS Rural & Small Town Mission

In his "Theological Statement for Mission in the 21st Century," LCMS President Rev. Dr. Matthew Harrison states, "Where the Holy Trinity is present via the Gospel and received in faith, there cannot but be Witness (martyria), Mercy (diakonia), Life Together (koinonia). These three reflect God's very being as Creator, Redeemer and Sanctifier, and they encompass His holy and gracious will for all in Christ Jesus — namely that all come to believe in and bear witness to Christ, reflect divine compassion and live together in forgiveness, love and joy in the Church (AC I). Missouri District Annual Report on the Way

Last December was the final printed version of The Voice of Missouri. We have tried to expand our electronic communications through the weekly versions of The Voice and President Hagan's Encourage. However, we determined that we wanted to provide the congregations and their members with an Annual Report summarizing the work of the Missouri District in the last year. This report will be sent to those who formerly received The Voice of Missouri. It will also be available online. Please watch for your copy of the Annual Report in the coming days. We hope that it will provide you with helpful information about the district's critical targets and finances, but also inspiring stories about missions across the district and plans for the future."

DEVOTION:  Luke 15:1-10 (ESV)

"The Parable of the Lost Sheep"

15 Now the tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to hear him. And the Pharisees and the scribes grumbled, saying, "This man receives sinners and eats with them."

So he told them this parable: "What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open country, and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it? And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, 'Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.' Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.

"The Parable of the Lost Coin"
"Or what woman, having ten silver coins,[a] if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp and sweep the house and seek diligently until she finds it? And when she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, 'Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that I had lost.' 10 Just so, I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents."

I pray that you realize that Jesus isn't talking about a lost sheep or a lost coin in this passage.  He is talking about people, lost people.  He may even be talking about you.

Most people don't even know that they're lost.  For others, it takes a long time and a lot of struggle, pain, and hopelessness before they realize it.

If you are reading this, chances are that you are not lost, but on the off chance that you are reading this at a time in your life when you feel lost, or when everything in your life is out of control and you don't know which way or where to turn, PLEASE UNDERSTAND THIS!  JESUS IS THE WAY, THE TRUTH, AND THE LIFE!!!

If you're looking for peace look no further than Jesus who is the author and provider of true and real peace.  If you're looking for security, don't look to money or things, they can be taken away in an instant.  Look to Jesus, who secures you all the way to eternity.

If you're looking for true love, don't look for it in meaningless sex, or in people who can't commit to anything, look for Christ who is committed to you forever.  He has shown you what true love is through His suffering, death, and resurrection!

Do you want to be found?  Do you want to be that sheep that the shepherd carried on his shoulders and celebrated?  Do you want to be that coin that the woman found and called all of her friends about?   Turn around!  Turn away from the darkness, from the emptiness and turn to the Light and the peace that is Jesus Christ your Lord and Savior!  Repent and believe the good news that Jesus suffered, died, and rose again all FOR YOU!  Christ is risen!  HE IS RISEN INDEED!  Alleluia!

Prayer:  You are the seeker and savior of the lost.  Seek and save them through me.  Amen.

DEVOTION:  Ezekiel 34:11-24     English Standard Version (ESV)

"The Lord God Will Seek Them Out"

11 "For thus says the Lord God: Behold, I, I myself will search for my sheep and will seek them out. 12 As a shepherd seeks out his flock when he is among his sheep that have been scattered, so will I seek out my sheep, and I will rescue them from all places where they have been scattered on a day of clouds and thick darkness. 13 And I will bring them out from the peoples and gather them from the countries, and will bring them into their own land. And I will feed them on the mountains of Israel, by the ravines, and in all the inhabited places of the country. 14 I will feed them with good pasture, and on the mountain heights of Israel shall be their grazing land. There they shall lie down in good grazing land, and on rich pasture they shall feed on the mountains of Israel. 15 I myself will be the shepherd of my sheep, and I myself will make them lie down, declares the Lord God. 16 I will seek the lost, and I will bring back the strayed, and I will bind up the injured, and I will strengthen the weak, and the fat and the strong I will destroy.[a] I will feed them in justice.
17 "As for you, my flock, thus says the Lord God: Behold, I judge between sheep and sheep, between rams and male goats. 18 Is it not enough for you to feed on the good pasture, that you must tread down with your feet the rest of your pasture; and to drink of clear water, that you must muddy the rest of the water with your feet? 19 And must my sheep eat what you have trodden with your feet, and drink what you have muddied with your feet?
20 "Therefore, thus says the Lord God to them: Behold, I, I myself will judge between the fat sheep and the lean sheep. 21 Because you push with side and shoulder, and thrust at all the weak with your horns, till you have scattered them abroad, 22 I will rescue[b] my flock; they shall no longer be a prey. And I will judge between sheep and sheep. 23 And I will set up over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he shall feed them: he shall feed them and be their shepherd. 24 And I, the Lord, will be their God, and my servant David shall be prince among them. I am the Lord; I have spoken.

This reading is very clear about who does the shepherding, feeds, makes the sheep lie down, seeks the lost, brings back the strayed, and binds up the wounded.   It's God!  It's the heavenly Father.  It's the Son.  It's the Holy Spirit.   It's not us.  All we can do is get in the way.

And we most certainly do get in the way.  We get in the way of the Holy Spirit when we judge (and by judge I mean make ourselves out to be better than them) those who have strayed.  Ezekiel says it this way, "Is it not enough for you to feed on good pasture, that you must tread down with your feet the rest of your pasture and to drink of clear water, that you must muddy the rest of the water with your feet?" ".  "You push with side and shoulder, and thrust at the weak with your horns, till you have scattered them abroad."

When we put restrictions and force the law on people, that we ourselves can't keep, we become hypocrites and self righteous and cloud people's vision of a loving and forgiving God.  When we look down our noses at people just because they sin differently than we do we get in God's way.  When we, as a church, separate ourselves from the world, and refuse to acknowledge our own sin, people will not want to be a part of us.

We need to realize that the Lord is the one who seeks and saves the lost.  He searches us out.  He claims us as His own.  He forgives us and gives us new life.  He loves us to the end no matter how sinful we may become.

Do you want people to come back to church?  Then simply love them!  Love them till your patience wears out and then love them some more!  Love them with Christ's love, not your own!  Forgive them!  Be reconciled with them!

Prayer: Lord, get me out of your way and find those who are lost.  Bring them back to church and fill up our sanctuary.  Help us to love
the lost and to rejoice when you find them!  Amen.

Another prayer request

Please pray for the family and friends of the BEAIRD FAMILY.  Two kids, Gavin (13) and Chloe (7) were killed.  Both mother and father were very badly injured.

Below are the details:

Two Warrenton youths were killed and their parents were seriously injured in a five car accident on Interstate 70 in the Blue Springs area in Jackson County, Monday.

The Missouri Highway Patrol reports that 7 year old Chloe Beaird and 13 year old Gavin Beaird were killed in the accident.  They were passengers in a car being driven by 39 year old David Beaird, who was seriously injured, along with another passenger, 37 year old Jennifer Beaird.

The patrol says David Beaird was going eastbound on Interstate 70 when his car was hit in the rear by another vehicle being driven by James Green from Odessa. Green's vehicle then struck a third car which in turn collided with two other vehicles.

Prayer request

Please pray for the FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF TYLER ROMAKER.  Although he and his family are members at Holy Rosary, he was a friend to many at St. John's.

DEVOTION:  Psalm 119:169-176  English Standard Version (ESV)

169 Let my cry come before you, O Lord;
give me understanding according to your word!
170 Let my plea come before you;
deliver me according to your word.
171 My lips will pour forth praise,
for you teach me your statutes.
172 My tongue will sing of your word,
for all your commandments are right.
173 Let your hand be ready to help me,
for I have chosen your precepts.
174 I long for your salvation, O Lord,
and your law is my delight.
175 Let my soul live and praise you,
and let your rules help me.
176 I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek your servant,
for I do not forget your commandments.

This past weekend we heard the news that the remains of Jacob Wetterling, a boy in my home state who went missing in August of 1989, had been found.  Although he had been missing for nearly three decades, his parents never gave up hope, never stopped searching, always kept their porch light on, and kept loving their son even though he was lost.

It reminded me of another person who does the same thing for us all.  JESUS!!!  He never stops searching for the lost.  He employs us, mere sinful humans that we are, to search for the lost as well.  The Holy Spirit moves us to have the same heart that he does so that we may love the lost like he does.

I know I have the Holy Spirit in me, because he continually gives me a heart for the lost and for those who have strayed away from Him.  If the Holy Spirit was not in me, I would care nothing for those who care nothing for the Lord or for those who have lost their way.  But I do.

Our Lord Jesus did too!  He spent most of his time among the lost.  He loved the lost.  He healed them.  He preached the good news to them.  He forgave their sins.

The church exists to do the same thing.  We are, as Paul puts "the body of Christ", or "ambassadors for Christ".  He makes his appeal to souls through us.  He shows His love to sinners through us.   He allows us to experience the joy and satisfaction of using our voices, our abilities, and our very lives to seek and save the lost!

Don't ever forget why god made you a member of St. John's!  He made you a member so that you could do His will among the members, but more importantly, out in the community among sinners.   So do it!  Love sinners!  Care for them!  Share the good news of Jesus' forgiveness and peace with them!  That's why your here!  Do it and you'll find the satisfaction and purpose you so desire!

Prayer:  Lord,, put me to work in your kingdom finding your lost sheep!  Amen.
