169 Let my cry come before you, O Lord;
give me understanding according to your word!
170 Let my plea come before you;
deliver me according to your word.
171 My lips will pour forth praise,
for you teach me your statutes.
172 My tongue will sing of your word,
for all your commandments are right.
173 Let your hand be ready to help me,
for I have chosen your precepts.
174 I long for your salvation, O Lord,
and your law is my delight.
175 Let my soul live and praise you,
and let your rules help me.
176 I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek your servant,
for I do not forget your commandments.
This past weekend we heard the news that the remains of Jacob Wetterling, a boy in my home state who went missing in August of 1989, had been found. Although he had been missing for nearly three decades, his parents never gave up hope, never stopped searching, always kept their porch light on, and kept loving their son even though he was lost.
It reminded me of another person who does the same thing for us all. JESUS!!! He never stops searching for the lost. He employs us, mere sinful humans that we are, to search for the lost as well. The Holy Spirit moves us to have the same heart that he does so that we may love the lost like he does.
I know I have the Holy Spirit in me, because he continually gives me a heart for the lost and for those who have strayed away from Him. If the Holy Spirit was not in me, I would care nothing for those who care nothing for the Lord or for those who have lost their way. But I do.
Our Lord Jesus did too! He spent most of his time among the lost. He loved the lost. He healed them. He preached the good news to them. He forgave their sins.
The church exists to do the same thing. We are, as Paul puts "the body of Christ", or "ambassadors for Christ". He makes his appeal to souls through us. He shows His love to sinners through us. He allows us to experience the joy and satisfaction of using our voices, our abilities, and our very lives to seek and save the lost!
Don't ever forget why god made you a member of St. John's! He made you a member so that you could do His will among the members, but more importantly, out in the community among sinners. So do it! Love sinners! Care for them! Share the good news of Jesus' forgiveness and peace with them! That's why your here! Do it and you'll find the satisfaction and purpose you so desire!
Prayer: Lord,, put me to work in your kingdom finding your lost sheep! Amen.
