As the Our Savior Christian Academy (OSCA) school year comes to end in late May, there is much to be accomplished. The Academy is currently preparing for their High School Open House which is scheduled for Wednesday, May 4 at the OSCA East campus in Smithville. The event will highlight OSCA's new partnership with Northland Career Center, as well as 2016-2017 core and elective classes. DEVOTION:  John 10:22-30 English Standard Version (ESV)

I and the Father Are One

²² At that time the Feast of Dedication took place at Jerusalem. It was winter, ²³ and Jesus was walking in the temple, in the colonnade of Solomon. ²⁴ So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, "How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly." ²⁵ Jesus answered them, "I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father's name bear witness about me, ²⁶ but you do not believe because you are not among my sheep. ²⁷ My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. ²⁸ I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. ²⁹ My Father, who has given them to me,^[a] is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand. ³⁰ I and the Father are one."
 
This verse reminds us that we are not the ones who make Christians out of people.  We don't do the converting, the Holy Spirit does.   We are only the hands, feet, and mouth of the Holy Spirit.  We just share the Gospel, we don't make the Gospel work. 
 
So the next time you are frustrated that a person you love isn't receiving the Gospel like he or she should, don't blame yourself.  Don't try to shove it down the person's throat.  Don't force the Gospel on him or her.  Just tell the good news with your mouth and show the good news with your actions of love and forgiveness, and then get out the way and let the Holy Spirit do His work. 
 
It also tells us that He will give us eternal life, we will never perish, no one is able to snatch us out of His hand.   Nothing should give us greater comfort and peace than this today!  If you believe in the Lord Jesus and His suffering, death, and resurrection, you will be with Him forever!  Rejoice!
 
Prayer: Lord, help me to relax when it comes to sharing the Gospel and just let it flow from my mouth, and from my forgiveness and love.  Then swoop in and do what You do best.  Give me Your grace in abundance so I can rest and enjoy this day despite all that is going on around me.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S  BIBLE QUIZ:         Who was Absalom and what was unusual/different about him compared to everyone else?

Well, yesterday's quiz answers part of this question. He was King David's hot-headed, third son. His name, BTW, means "Father of peace," – which is pretty ironic, considering all the violence he created throughout his life. According to 2 Samuel 14:25, he was the hottest dude in all the kingdom. (He was known for his long, flowing hair). And he apparently knew he was a stud muffin, since he liked to live the good life. He took advantage of the whole royal entitlement thing, living in a really nice palace, owning a spiffy chariot, and having an entourage of 50 men running before him. Sort of a Justin Bieber on steroids. Same attitude, same empty head. Well, except for the hair.

Aside from being the son of David, he was also the grandson of the King of Geshur – and that was where he went, after snuffing out his half-brother, Amnon. Which makes one wonder why David – knowing he was offending not only his royal wife, Maacah, by not defending her daughter Tamar, but also Maacah's father, a neighboring king – would turn a blind eye to his 2nd son's actions. By allowing Amnon to go unpunished, David was basically thumbing his nose at an entire people. Not a very smart political move.

Anyway, Absalom later led a revolt against his father, which ended up with him hanging in a tree, by the afore-mentioned hair. Despite failing in his own revolt, his branch of the family did eventually inherit the throne, through his daughter Maacah's marriage to Rehoboam.

BEGINNING FIREARMS SAFETY TRAINING  TO BE HELD TUESDAY, APRIL 26, 7-9pm!!! 

 

Below is all you need to know

 

1. This will be led by two very seasoned and knowledgeable gun owners:  Paul Brockfeld (Brockfeld Gunsmithing) and Jason Cluver (State Trooper in Montgomery County).  

 

2. This will be a good review for all who have been handling guns for years, and a good beginner course as well.

 

3. This safety class is to kick off St John's Gun Club!   After the class we will start planning fun and safe outings!!

 

4. The class is for EVERYONE 11 years old and up. 

 

5. If anyone knows of any SAFE ranges that are cheap or free, that don't require a membership, and that can take group reservations (or are usually able to hold a group of 10 or so) please let me know. 

 

6. It will be the beginning of hunter safety certification and satisfy the first part of it, but will not complete the course.  The second four hours has to be led and taught by a "certified" instructor at one of their locations.  There will be a course held at the VFW in Warrenton on August 6, from 8am-noon.

For PASTOR'S MOM, who is having hip replacement surgery on April 25.

DEVOTION: Revelation 7:9-17  English Standard Version (ESV)

A Great Multitude from Every Nation

⁹ After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, ¹⁰ and crying out with a loud voice, "Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!" ¹¹ And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, ¹² saying, "Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen."
¹³ Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, "Who are these, clothed in white robes, and from where have they come?" ¹⁴ I said to him, "Sir, you know." And he said to me, "These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation. They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

¹⁵ "Therefore they are before the throne of God,
    and serve him day and night in his temple;
    and he who sits on the throne will shelter them with his presence.
¹⁶ They shall hunger no more, neither thirst anymore;
    the sun shall not strike them,
    nor any scorching heat.
¹⁷ For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd,
    and he will guide them to springs of living water,
and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes."

 
Who are these clothed in white robes?  They are YOU and ME if we are believers in the One who died and rose for us.  CHRIST IS RISEN!!!!  HE IS RISEN INDEED!
 
On this earth all Christians will have their differences.  Right now we go by our interpretation of the Scriptures, and there are many interpretations, believe me.  We can and will get into all manner of discussion and disagreement  when it comes to things like baptism, the Lord's Supper, and all manner of other doctrinal differences.  Yet, when the end comes it all of us who have "washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb." 
 
How do we wash our robes in the blood of Jesus?  We do so in the way He has told us.  "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved."  "Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."   "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him will have eternal life."
 
Right now we are going through this "great tribulation" called life.  It is filled with all manner of good things, but quite a bit of bad stuff too.  We get tired.  We are constantly tempted.  We fall into that temptation.  We hurt others, ourselves, and especially God with our words, thoughts and actions.  Need I go on? 
 
My family is going through some tough times right now.  My sister's father in law is on life support and isn't expected to make it.  My dad is dealing with gall bladder problems, and my mom is having hip replacement surgery in a week and a half.  PLEASE PRAY FOR THEM ALL!!
 
All of this makes me long for Jesus to return.  It is hard to have patience and to wait for it.   The good news, actually the BEST NEWS is that there will come a day when this tribulation will end.  We will "come out of the great tribulation" with our white robes on singing praises to the Lord and enjoying His perfect presence and our perfected souls forever and ever! 
 
Again I say, "CHRIST IS RISEN!!  He is risen indeed!  Alleluia! 
 
Prayer: In the middle of this tribulation help me to constantly remember that I have washed my robe and made it white in Your blood and there will come a day when I will get to wear that robe for all eternity and it will never get old or uncomfortable.  Amen. __________________________________________________________________________________________

YESTERDAY'S  BIBLE QUIZ:        Who was Amnon and what did he do that caused his half brother Absalom to kill him?

Amnon was the oldest son of David, who raped his half-sister, Tamar – who was Absalom's full sister. What happened was, Amnon had the hots for Tamar, and pretended to be sick, so that she would come and make a special meal for him. After he raped her, he kicked her out of his house – as though he was the offended party. Right.

And even though King David was really, really "mad" about it – again, right – he couldn't bring himself to punish his oldest son. This defied his responsibility to protect his daughter, and also went against Go (see Leviticus 18:11). Plus, caused resentment between the members of his house – due to his favoritism. Not smart.

Anyway, Absalom took matters into his own hands, and two years later, invited Amnon to a stag party, got him drunk, and killed him. Which was also not right.

But, if David had punished Amnon in the first place – instead of basically just saying, "boys will be boys," the whole thing might have turned out differently.

BTW, poor Tamar was the real loser in this story. Like Jacob's daughter, Dinah, her reputation was totally trashed. And back then, that was all a woman had. Once lost, her life was pretty much ruined. She could never hope for a respectable marriage, and would have even been treated like a pariah, even by her own family. Plus, David and the rest of the family, probably blamed her for the whole mess.

BEGINNING FIREARMS SAFETY TRAINING  TO BE HELD TUESDAY, APRIL 26, 7-9pm!!! 

 

Below is all you need to know

 

1. This will be led by two very seasoned and knowledgeable gun owners:  Paul Brockfeld (Brockfeld Gunsmithing) and Jason Cluver (State Trooper in Montgomery County).  

 

2. This will be a good review for all who have been handling guns for years, and a good beginner course as well.

 

3. This safety class is to kick off St John's Gun Club!   After the class we will start planning fun and safe outings!!

 

4. The class is for EVERYONE 11 years old and up. 

 

5. If anyone knows of any SAFE ranges that are cheap or free, that don't require a membership, and that can take group reservations (or are usually able to hold a group of 10 or so) please let me know. 

 

6. It will be the beginning of hunter safety certification and satisfy the first part of it, but will not complete the course.  The second four hours has to be led and taught by a "certified" instructor at one of their locations.  There will be a course held at the VFW in Warrenton on August 6, from 8am-noon.

 

6. If you are planning on participating in the safety course please RSVP asap!!

OPERATION BACKPACK FOR APRIL IS CANNED SOUP AND RAMEN NOODLES

 

(Remember this is for the poor and needy children of our community and county that often receive two breakfast and lunch at school, and have very little or no food at home.)

For LYNN FIGURA who is recovering from knee replacement surgery at Delmar Gardens in Florissant. .

 

For EVELYN TOEDEBUSCH, Lois Boeger's mom, who is dealing with severe back pain and has been moved to a rehab nursing home. .

 

For PASTOR'S SISTER'S FATHER IN LAW, CLARENCE SICKMANN, who is having seizures and tremors after an aneurysm and surgery to fix it.

 

For PASTOR'S DAD, ROGER KLAUSTERMEIER, who is awaiting word from the surgeon as to what to do about his gall bladder.

 

For PASTOR'S MOM, who is having hip replacement surgery on April 25.

 

For DON BRAZEE as he has been moved to Breeze Park in Weldon Spring for rehab and to receive his cancer treatment.

 

For PASTOR PIPER, from St. Paul, New Melle, as he recovers from a heart attack he had while running a 5K in Florida.

 

For DENISE SCHLESSELMANN as she is in need of more funding to continue her mission work in the Czech Republic.

DEVOTION: Acts 20:17-35

¹⁷ Now from Miletus he sent to Ephesus and called the elders of the church to come to him. ¹⁸ And when they came to him, he said to them:

"You yourselves know how I lived among you the whole time from the first day that I set foot in Asia, ¹⁹ serving the Lord with all humility and with tears and with trials that happened to me through the plots of the Jews; ²⁰ how I did not shrink from declaring to you anything that was profitable, and teaching you in public and from house to house, ²¹ testifying both to Jews and to Greeks of repentance toward God and of faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. ²² And now, behold, I am going to Jerusalem, constrained by^[a] the Spirit, not knowing what will happen to me there, ²³ except that the Holy Spirit testifies to me in every city that imprisonment and afflictions await me. ²⁴ But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God. ²⁵ And now, behold, I know that none of you among whom I have gone about proclaiming the kingdom will see my face again. ²⁶ Therefore I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all, ²⁷ for I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole counsel of God. ²⁸ Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God,^[b] which he obtained with his own blood.^{[c] 29} I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; ³⁰ and from among your own selves will arise men speaking twisted things, to draw away the disciples after them. ³¹ Therefore be alert, remembering that for three years I did not cease night or day to admonish every one with tears. ³² And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified. ³³ I coveted no one's silver or gold or apparel. ³⁴ You yourselves know that these hands ministered to my necessities and to those who were with me. ³⁵ In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.'"

 

 

You can hear the pain in Paul's voice as he is talking to the Ephesians.  Evidently the Holy Spirit had revealed to Paul in some way that this was going to be the last time he would see the Ephesians.  After these verses we will see that the Ephesians were very sad too. 

 

I've been in many hospital rooms at the end of many lives and seen loved ones weep, because they won't see their loved ones alive again.  I've been there with my own family.  If you've lived long enough on this earth you've gone through it too.  It's a very sad thing.  It hurts like nothing else.  It is the end of an earthly relationship.  It leaves a big hole.  It is no good.

 

At the same time it is NOT the end but only the beginning of life for a believer.  We are sad for ourselves, but we need not be sad for the person who is dying or who is gone.  Paul was sad that he wouldn't see the Ephesians again.  He was also sad that he was going to go through imprisonment and death at the hands of those who would want him dead.  But he wasn't sad that he was going to die!  He was happy about that!  In fact he says in one of his letters.  "I desire to be with the Lord, which is better by far."  He also says, "whether I live or I die I belong to the Lord." 

 

The cold hard and yet wonderful truth is that none of us knows when our last day is going to be.  We often talk about an "untimely" death, but there is no such thing as an "untimely" death when it comes to the Lord.  Death is the gate to life immortal!  It isn't convenient.  It isn't lovely.  Death is harsh.  Death is the result of sin.  Yet, God uses this gruesome and awful thing called death to release us from these sinful bodies and give us real rest forever. Praise the Lord!

 

Prayer: As Paul was sad because he wouldn't see his beloved Ephesian brothers and sisters again, we are sad at the loss of loved ones as well.  Help us to rejoice that we will see our loved ones again in paradise forever.  Amen.
