Students celebrated the week with service projects, parties, special dress-up days, fun assemblies, and special person days. Several schools began the week by participating in Sunday worship services that highlighted the blessings of Lutheran education. The theme of this year's week was "Life Together" based on 1 Corinthians 1:9 "God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord."                   Immanuel, St. Charles                                     Immanuel, Wentzville          Favorite Book Character Day                                    Super Hero Day   Lutheran South students sang at the LCMS International Center and three singers were featured on KFUO's Faith N Family with Andy Bates.   Lutheran North students celebrated Special Persons Day (like Grandparents Day) and had a special chapel to celebrate the love of families and the importance of Lutheran education.  New Missionaries Appointed by LBT Board                                                 Five new individuals were appointed to begin missionary service with Lutheran Bible Translators (LBT). At the January 2016 meeting of the Lutheran Bible Translators Board of Directors, five missionary candidates were presented and their appointment was unanimously approved. DEVOTION: Luke 9:28-36 English Standard Version (ESV)

The Transfiguration

²⁸ Now about eight days after these sayings he took with him Peter and John and James and went up on the mountain to pray. ²⁹ And as he was praying, the appearance of his face was altered, and his clothing became dazzling white. ³⁰ And behold, two men were talking with him, Moses and Elijah, ³¹ who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure,^[a] which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. ³² Now Peter and those who were with him were heavy with sleep, but when they became fully awake they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. ³³ And as the men were parting from him, Peter said to Jesus, "Master, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah"—not knowing what he said. ³⁴ As he was saying these things, a cloud came and overshadowed them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. ³⁵ And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, "This is my Son, my Chosen One;^[b] listen to him!" ³⁶ And when the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and told no one in those days anything of what they had seen.
 
Can you imagine this scene?  It's a scene of heaven really.  Jesus and two of his saints talking together and the voice of the Father speaking clearly.  What a beautiful and overwhelming sight this must've been for the three.  First seeing Jesus in his glory, then seeing Moses and Elijah, the two most important figures in all of Israel's history.  It would be like us seeing George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Jesus. standing together and talking about the forming of the United States, except much bigger and more important than that.
 
How wonderful it will be to be in the true and full presence of Almighty God.  I can't wait.  Until then, it is most wonderful to know that we are in the real presence of Christ in the Lord's Supper.  We can even partake of His REAL presence as we eat His body and drink His blood. 
 
The fact is that we are always in his presence.  He promised that he would never leave us or forsake us.  He is omnipresent!  he is with you where you are and with me where I am.  He knows us better than we know ourselves and even knows our futures. 
 
In a way, we are already experiencing a little bit of heaven.  We can rest secure and assured that He is with us for all eternity.  Even when we stumble and fall in this world, he picks us up, he makes us clean!  His presence is a most wonderful thing!
 
Prayer:  Lord, we rejoice in your presence, knowing that we need not fear it, but can rest in it.  Help us to appreciate your presence more and more each day.  Amen.

LENT DINNERS START AT 5:30 THIS COMING WEDNESDAY!!

Over the last many, many years your Jr. and Sr. high youth and their parents (mostly their parents) have been serving dinner on Wednesday nights during Lent.  While this is a good way for the youth and their parents to serve and give back to the congregation, it is also supposed to be a way for them to raise money for their service projects and trips. 
 
Unfortunately over the past several years, they have barely broken even on these dinners.  The parents usually donate the desserts and even much of the other food out of their own pockets.  Without that the youth would probably lose money. 
 
It is especially important that they make money this year, as they will need all they can get to make their goal for the National Youth Gathering in new Orleans.
 
I want to encourage you all to attend these dinners, and, while there is no set price per person for these dinners, a generous free will offering is strongly encouraged!!

SPRINGTIME IN BRANSON

Sign the sheet in the narthex if you are interested in a two day trip to Branson on April 16 and 17.  Cost will be around #300 per person.  The itinerary for Saturday upon arrival in Branson is to head to the College of the Ozarks (a.k.a. Hard Work U) for a tour led by a college student.  . From there we will go to do a self guided tour of the Keeter Museum.  Saturday evening we will go to the Sight and Sound Theater for "Moses".  This is the first year for "Moses" in Branson.  Watch the February newsletter for more details.  There will be a surprise for Sunday.  We are running out of time, so please, if you know your friends want to go, sign up quickly as deposits need to be made and tickets purchased.  Remember, the more people we get to go the cheaper it is for all.

For PASTOR PIPER, from St. Paul, New Melle, as he recovers from a heart attack he had while running a 5K in Florida.

 

For THOSE DEALING WITH FLOODING PROBLEMS in the days and weeks ahead, that the Lord would provide for their needs, and use us, if need be, to help. 

 

For DENISE SCHLESSELMANN as she is in need of more funding to continue her mission work in the Czech Republic.

 Please pray for Don Brazee, as he has had a lot of health problems lately.
 
1. He fell at the beginning of the month.
2. Had a pacemaker put in on January 26.
3. Is dealing with unidentified swelling in his joints and will be seeing a rheumatologist tomorrow.

Daily Email: Wednesday, February 3, 2016

DEVOTION: Hebrews 3:1-6
3 Therefore, holy brothers,^[a] you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, ² who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God's^[b] house. ³ For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses—as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself. ⁴ (For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.) ⁵ Now Moses was faithful in all God's house as a servant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, ⁶ but Christ is faithful over God's house as a son. And we are his house if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.
 
We are called a lot of things when it comes to our relationship with Jesus.  Today we are called his house.  What does it mean that we are God's house?  Well, let's see what the verse says:
1. The builder has more honor than the building.  Yes, a nice house is nice to look at, and if it is functional, it will be a house that is good for many things.  If the house is sturdy it will stand for many years and withstand tons of storms, but when all is said and done, it is the builder who will be esteemed for his craftsmanship and attention to detail.  So it is with us.  We are created by Jesus to be beautiful, functional, and strong.  He created us for his purpose which is simply to love him.  So we do what he created us and sustains us for. 
 
2. "Moses was faithful IN all God's house as a servant...... but Christ is faithful OVER God's house as a Son."  Christ is over us.  He is our owner.  As our owner, he doesn't abuse us or treat us harshly, but loves us, cares for us, and keeps us free of things that will harm our structure to tear us down.  A house can't take care of itself.  Neither can we take care of our spiritual selves.  We may be able to care for our bodies by eating what is right, exercising, and getting good sleep, but if our soul isn't cared for we will crumble into dust. 
 
3. "We are God's house if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope."  Holding fast to confidence and hope is the one thing that makes Christianity different from all other Religions.  All others hold fast to what a person can do and is commanded to do by God.  We hold fast to what Christ has done!  We have confidence in Christ, not ourselves. 
 
You are Christ's house!  Live like it!  Be sturdy (confident).... in JESUS!  Be functional (serve the Lord).... by the power of the Holy Spirit. And be beautiful in the love of Jesus!! 
 
Prayer: Lord, we are your house,. Keep cleaning us, shoring us up, and filling us with your goodness and grace.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S  BIBLE QUIZ:     What is an ephod?

 

Here is Don Nolte's fine answer:  An ephod is a vest woven in a pattern of squares.  The ephod, breastplate, lace of blue, and a blue robe were luxurious apparal worn by the priests.

 

 

Here is Pat King's answer for a little humor to start your day!!  (I'd share the picture, but it is too big to fit.)

I'm back!!!! And I know this one. Don't even have to look it up.

 

An "ephod" is an Old Testament iPad. For real! Everyone thinks those old dudes used to just text by chipping away on rocks. But Noooooooooo! They had ephods! First one was invented by a dude named:  Betzalel Sha'ar (aka: translated into Bill Gates). It was a big hit with teens.

 

But the oldies had a different definition of it: A part of the sacerdotal habit among Jews, being a covering for the back and breast, held together on the shoulders by two clasps or brooches of onyx stones set in gold, and fastened by a girdle of the same stuff as the ephod. The ephod for the priests was of plain linen; that for the high priest was richly embroidered in colors. The breastplate of the high priest was worn upon the ephod in front.

 

In other words, a fancy name for an apron.

For THOSE DEALING WITH FLOODING PROBLEMS in the days and weeks ahead, that the Lord would provide for their needs, and use us, if need be, to help. 

 

For DENISE SCHLESSELMANN as she is in need of more funding to continue her mission work in the Czech Republic.

DEVOTION: Deuteronomy 34 English Standard Version (ESV)
"The Death of Moses"

34 Then Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which is opposite Jericho. And the Lord showed him all the land, Gilead as far as Dan, ² all Naphtali, the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the western sea, ³ the Negeb, and the Plain, that is, the Valley of Jericho the city of palm trees, as far as Zoar. ⁴ And the Lord said to him, "This is the land of which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, 'I will give it to your offspring.' I have let you see it with your eyes, but you shall not go over there." ⁵ So Moses the servant of the Lord died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the Lord, ⁶ and he buried him in the valley in the land of Moab opposite Beth-peor; but no one knows the place of his burial to this day. ⁷ Moses was 120 years old when he died. His eye was undimmed, and his vigor unabated. ⁸ And the people of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days. Then the days of weeping and mourning for Moses were ended.

⁹ And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him. So the people of Israel obeyed him and did as the Lord had commanded Moses. ¹⁰ And there has not arisen a prophet since in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face, ¹¹ none like him for all the signs and the wonders that the Lord sent him to do in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh and to all his servants and to all his land, ¹² and for all the mighty power and all the great deeds of terror that Moses did in the sight of all Israel.
 
Yes, there was none like Moses before or after him, that the Lord knew face to face.  But also Moses was counted among the Israelites who was not allowed to enter the Promised Land because of his sin.  In stead of speaking to the rock so that water gushed out of it, as the Lord had commanded him, he decided to strike the rock instead.  That little sin, as trivial as it may sound, was what kept Moses from entering.  It may sounded trivial, but it wasn't to God.  To God it looked like disobedience just like Adam and Eve's.  To God it looked like a sin he would have to send His Son to die for.  To God, that one sin deserved hell just as much as a million other sins that Moses had committed. 
 
When you are thinking of your own sinfulness, don't compare it to others.  You may be better than others, and your sins may not even compare in how serious you think they are.  But just remember that God kicked Adam and Eve out of the garden for eating a piece of fruit that was off limits.  He considers all sins rebellion against him.  As innocent as you may think they are, there is no such thing as innocent sin. 
 
All sin, even if it is just one lone sin, condemns!
 
At the same time, we see him at the Transfiguration speaking with the Lord Jesus.  That tells us something.  It tells us that the Lord Jesus was still with Him even in death.  It shows us that Moses is still alive with Jesus!  Jesus saved Moses just like He will save you!
 
Rejoice that even though your sin is serious, Christ's grace is more serious!  He has conquered sin and death!
 
Prayer: Lord, help me to realize the seriousness of my sins so that I may turn to you, my Savior!  Amen.

Moses asked for contributions from the people.  Contributions received were gold silver and bronze, blue, purple and scarlet yarns and fine twined linen, goat's hair, tanned  rams' skins, goatskins, acacia wood, oil for the lamps, spices for anointing oil and the fragrant incense, onyx stones, and stones for setting for the ephod and for the breast plates. SPRINGTIME IN BRANSON

Sign the sheet in the narthex if you are interested in a two day trip to Branson on April 16 and 17.  Cost will be around #300 per person.  The itinerary for Saturday upon arrival in Branson is to head to the College of the Ozarks (a.k.a. Hard Work U) for a tour led by a college student.  . From there we will go to do a self guided tour of the Keeter Museum.  Saturday evening we will go to the Sight and Sound Theater for "Moses".  This is the first year for "Moses" in Branson.  Watch the February newsletter for more details.  There will be a surprise for Sunday.  We are running out of time, so please, if you know your friends want to go, sign up quickly as deposits need to be made and tickets purchased.  Remember, the more people we get to go the cheaper it is for all.
