DEVOTION:  "O my strength, I watch for you, you, O God, are my fortress, my loving God.  Psalm 59:9

This morning on the news I heard about a terrorist group, Al-Shabab, attacking a university in Kenya and killing at least 15 Christians, and more than 500 students unaccounted for.  Reports continue to come in.  It literally gives me a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach when I hear of these things.  I have seminary classmates and friends who are missionaries in that part of the world.  I am Facebook friends with many Lutheran pastors over there.  It is quite a dangerous place and time to be a Christian.  There are hundreds of people losing their lives each day simply for believing in the one true God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and for confessing that Jesus is Lord and Savior.

At the same time, guess what, THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH AND ESPECIALLY THE LUTHERAN CHURCH IS GROWING IN AFRICA, ESPECIALLY IN PLACES LIKE KENYA AND UGANDA!

You read that right, despite persecution the Christian church is GROWING!

This is simply because the Lord our God is OUR STRENGTH, OUR FORTRESS AND OUR LOVING GOD!  In spite of enemies all around us, and in spite of those who are trying to attack our freedoms they cannot take away our faith.  In the middle of persecution many are seeing the bold and courageous faith of Christians and seeing how strong they are in Christ and they want what that person, whether he has lived or died, has in Christ!

Please pray for the Lutheran churches and all the Christians in Kenya as they face persecution and terror today.  Pray for that whole part of the world where terrorist seem to be ruling the day.  Pray for our country that we may retain our freedoms and that terrorists would stay away, but if they come, that we would be fierce and strong in the Holy Spirit to defend our freedom and our faith.  Keep praying!

Let us pray:  Lord bless the Christians in Kenya who are under attack.  Bless us as we are under attack by Satan with your fierce and complete protection so that we may stand firm in our faith till the end.  Amen.

Good Christians never fight! ... or do they? (Invitation to a one day conference at Chapel of the Cross in St. Peters

BELOW IS INFORMATION AND AN INVITATION TO A ONE DAY CONFERENCE/BIBLE STUDY ON HOW TO FORGIVE AND HOW TO BE AN AGENT OF FORGIVENESS FOR OTHERS.  Please consider going.  I am going and I'd love you to go with me.  If the fee is a hindrance to going we can work that out!

"It has been years since I've talked to my parents, but I still can't forgive what they did."

"The pastor needs to go, or we're out of here!"

"With all the fighting we do, divorce seems like the only answer."

"How could someone who calls himself a Christian treat people the way he does?"

It's no April fools joke! Christians can and do fight like everyone else... When we do, relationships wither, businesses and careers suffer, and the witness of the church is weakenedYou can help to reverse this pattern. Learn what opportunities God gives you in His ministry of reconciliation. In this one day of Bible study, God can change your attitude towards conflict and your relationship to others.

We are just a few weeks away from our first-ever Cultivating Lifestyles of Reconciliation Conference!

We've added a new option just for you - those living in the St. Louis area. For just $35 you may attend the Blessed are the Peacemakers Seminar presented Friday, April 17th at the conference.  Lunch is included! Register for this option and join us for a day of Bible study and discover how it can transform relationsionships in your life today!

Register today!

A student shared this: "I was moved to tears by the stories of real people in real fights experiencing real healing."

Rev Klaustermeier, we would also love to serve you with our full Cultivating Lifestyles of Reconciliation Conference April 16-18.  You will want to register soon.

Your brother in Christ,

"
Pilate's Gamble"

April 1, 2015
Lenten Devotion 2015 cover
"But you have a custom that I should release one man for you at the Passover. So do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?" (John 18:39).
Read John 18:38-40.
Pilate won't listen to Jesus; he is too busy trying to work this out himself. How can he force the Jewish authorities to accept his decision to set Jesus free? Maybe one of the local customs might do the trick. It was implemented to improve Roman-Jewish relations. At the Passover feast, the Roman governors released a prisoner the Jewish crowds requested. Normally it was a popular person who had been imprisoned for speaking against the Roman government. This time Pilate would offer the choice between Jesus and the most dangerous criminal in the prison: Barabbas.

This was a stroke of genius! Jesus offered no true threat to public safety and clearly Barabbas was as dangerous to the Jewish leaders as he was to the Romans. But Pilate misjudges the Jewish leaders, who are convinced Jesus is a much greater threat to them and to the Jewish nation than Barabbas.

When the leaders convince the crowd to demanded Barabbas' release and crucify Jesus, Pilate finds himself in a far worse position than if he had simply set Jesus free and lived with the consequences.

Whenever we shun the responsibilities God gives us-to speak up for those who are defenseless, to bring up our children in the fear and knowledge of God or those in any other area of life-we are just like Pontius Pilate.

Jesus didn't step away from His responsibility but freely took the punishment of our sins upon Himself.

THE PRAYER: Lord, thank You for paying the price for all the times I walk away from the responsibilities You give me. Give me courage and commitment to step forward and do what You want me to do. Amen.

March newsletter from Denise Schlesselmann

Hi all,
It's a good thing everyone there is behind the Czech Republic . It's 11:47  in the evening as I'm writing this. I only have 13 minutes until it is no longer March.
Have a blesses Holy Week.
Denise

DEVOTION:  David said to the Philistine, "You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.  This day the Lord will hand you over to me, and I'll strike you down and cut off your head."  1 Samuel 17:45-46a

All off us are unsure and uneasy in life.  If we weren't there would be no need for blood pressure medicine.  If we weren't we'd all be confident in our abilities.  Yet, because of our sinful minds, Satan tempts us to be unsure and to forget that our whole being, soul, mind, and body completely relies on God to begin with.  When he is successful we begin to worry and be frightened about things going on in life.  We are afraid of that person who is against us.  We are afraid that we will fail.  We are afraid of what people will think of us.

In those times of uncertainty and fear, we can be reminded of this story of David here.  David was so sure that God would give him success that he went right up to the 9 foot tall giant and told him he would cut off his head and feed his carcass to the wild animals.  He knew the power of God and he was sure of it.

Brothers and sisters, we need not be afraid!  We need not be unsure!  No, let me change that a bit.  We can be unsure of ourselves all day, because we will fail.  On our own we can do nothing good.  Yet, because God loves us, he sent his Son, Jesus for us.  he has already conquered death.  He keeps his promises!  He has already done it!  Of this you can be sure!  Have the confidence of David today and go up to Satan and tell him, "You come at me with temptations and trials and struggles, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and he has the victory over you!  He has already cut off your head.

Prayer:  Lord God, thank you for giving me your name to go against evil so that I may win.  Help me to fight against evil in my own life and in the life of others today so they may know your name and your love.  Amen.

DEVOTION: "He who is the Glory of Israel does not lie or change his mind, for he is not a man, that he should change his mind."
1 Samuel 15:29

When you were younger did you ever try to persuade your mom or dad to give you something you really wanted?  At first they may have said no, but you keep on asking and keep buttering them up till they are worn down and eventually give in.  I must confess that both of my kids have done that to me a time or two.  I don't like it that I am so weak and that I cave in so easily.  It has cost me many a dollar that I did not expect to spend.

Thankfully God is not like that.   In our passage for today, Saul directly disobeyed the Lord's command.  Instead of destroying everything and everyone of the Amalekites, he kept the King and the best of the flocks and herds.  Because he did this and didn't obey the Lord fully,  Samuel pronounced the judgment of the Lord which was that the kingdom would be ripped from him and given to one of his enemies.  The Philistines would take it over and the war between the Philistines would become a long and arduous one.  Eventually the kingship would be given to David who would, in turn, be the ancestor of Jesus.

God tells us that story to teach us that if we are to be successful and at peace in this life we need to obey the Lord in everything.  That especially comes in when it comes to confessing, repenting and receiving forgiveness.  Saul tried to excuse his keeping of the best of the flocks and herds by saying that he was going to use them for sacrifices.  Instead of simply confessing his sinfulness and needs for forgiveness, Saul's pride and honor got in the way.

When you fail to do the Lord's will, the best thing you can do is fess up and admit your guilt.  Don't excuse it.  Don't sugarcoat it.  Give it up to God!  Let God's mercy and grace take care of it.  Let it shower over you so that you may truly experience God's will for your life, that he loves you till the end.

Prayer: Lord, keep us from excusing our sinfulness.  Keep us from trying to change your mind.  Help us to surrender to your will and rely on you for everything.  Amen.
