1 Samuel 15:29
When you were younger did you ever try to persuade your mom or dad to give you something you really wanted? At first they may have said no, but you keep on asking and keep buttering them up till they are worn down and eventually give in. I must confess that both of my kids have done that to me a time or two. I don't like it that I am so weak and that I cave in so easily. It has cost me many a dollar that I did not expect to spend.
Thankfully God is not like that. In our passage for today, Saul directly disobeyed the Lord's command. Instead of destroying everything and everyone of the Amalekites, he kept the King and the best of the flocks and herds. Because he did this and didn't obey the Lord fully, Samuel pronounced the judgment of the Lord which was that the kingdom would be ripped from him and given to one of his enemies. The Philistines would take it over and the war between the Philistines would become a long and arduous one. Eventually the kingship would be given to David who would, in turn, be the ancestor of Jesus.
God tells us that story to teach us that if we are to be successful and at peace in this life we need to obey the Lord in everything. That especially comes in when it comes to confessing, repenting and receiving forgiveness. Saul tried to excuse his keeping of the best of the flocks and herds by saying that he was going to use them for sacrifices. Instead of simply confessing his sinfulness and needs for forgiveness, Saul's pride and honor got in the way.
When you fail to do the Lord's will, the best thing you can do is fess up and admit your guilt. Don't excuse it. Don't sugarcoat it. Give it up to God! Let God's mercy and grace take care of it. Let it shower over you so that you may truly experience God's will for your life, that he loves you till the end.
Prayer: Lord, keep us from excusing our sinfulness. Keep us from trying to change your mind. Help us to surrender to your will and rely on you for everything. Amen.
