DEVOTION:  If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully follow all his command I give you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations on earth..... However, if you do not obey the Lord your God and do not carefully follow all his commands and decrees I am giving you today, all these curses will come upon you and overtake you.  Deuteronomy 28:1-2 and 15-16

Can you imagine your mom saying, "If you follow all the rules and do everything I say you will be blessed in this house, but as soon as you mess up I am kicking you out."  How long would it be before you were kicked out?  Wouldn't take very long would it?

As we look back on the Israelites and their failure to keep all the laws and decrees of God we can even begin to wonder if God was fair in giving such strict orders.  We see how impossible it is for us to keep everything perfectly and we can call God unjust and unfair.

But let's look at it from a different perspective.  Did God have to allow us to live in the first place?  Did he have to create us?  Did he have to let Adam and Eve live after they disobeyed Him?  Didn't he say that they would surely die?

Indeed, we can often look at God as being unfair.  But in the words of the one and only Bill Cosby, "I brought you into this world and I can take you out."

God has ultimate power and authority over us.  He has authority o bring us into this world and authority to take us out.  And thanks be to Him that He does take us out of this world, that he doesn't hold our sins against us as He could, and that He forgives our wickedness and remembers our sins no more.  He has mercy on us!  He loves us!

Let us pray:  Lord God, help us to see who truly has ultimate authority over whether we live or die, whether we go to heaven or not, whether we are with you forever or not.  Help us to rely on you!  Amen.

DEVOTION:  "Keep my commands and follow them.  I am the Lord.  Do not profane my holy name.  I must be acknowledged as holy by the Israelites.  I am the Lord, who makes you holy and who brought you out of Egypt to be your God.  I am the Lord."  Leviticus 23:31-33

I am in the middle of the law section of the Old Testament in my daily readings so please forgive me if the readings seem to be redundant and overbearing these last couple weeks.  There are a lot of laws.

That is the trouble with reading the Bible for a lot of people.  We do well through Genesis and Exodus because there are so many interesting stories.  It isn't until we get to Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy and we seem to get bogged down and lose interest.  This stuff gets a little tedious after a while.

Isn't that the way regular Christian life goes though too?  Our Christian life can be excited for a time and be full of interesting things, but then we get into the daily grind and the day to day stuff and things seem to get boring.  That is when we start looking for more excitement and unfortunately we look in all the wrong places.

I have come to the conclusion that this is the way with a  lot of people when it comes to the church and especially worship.  We crave excitement and new things and so when we go week to week and there isn't a whole lot of change and there isn't as much excitement as we would like we get bored and there is a danger that we will quit partaking and receiving of God's blessings given in worship and the Sacraments.  I pray that this never happens to you.

We need to be reminded of the passage above when it comes to who our God is and how we live our lives accordingly.  WE cannot fall prey to the devil's schemes to make us uninterested in the Lord.  We cannot think of worship and church as a means of entertainment and a way to satisfy our cravings for excitement.

Worship and our church family is a place where we receive what God wants to give us not what we only want to get.  Sometimes that means the law even if it is not exciting or entertaining.  Sometimes that means God comes to us in the every day mundane operations of day to day life.

My prayer for you is that you see God not as a means to excitement or as someone you can take as you please, but someone who is the LORD, Yahweh, the Holy One of Israel and your Creator and Redeemer.  I pray that you will treat Him with the honor and respect that He is due so that He may truly fill you with His mercy, grace, and peace forever!

Let us pray:  Lord God, help me not to get bored with You.  Make my life worth living as I live in Your grace and as I go through the day to day operations of confession, repentance, absolution and forgiveness.  And even though it may seem tedious at times help me to see the value in living a boring life in You.  Amen.

DEVOTION:

(The LORD said) "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go." Joshua 1:9

All I can say is the folks on the Carnival ship Triumph had it better than Gilligan, the skipper, too, the millionaire and his wife, the movie star, the professor and Mary Ann ....

Sorry, I get carried away.

I'm sure you've heard how there was a fire in the engine room of that great cruise ship. You've also heard how that ship was dead in the water, leaving 4,200 passengers to endure less-than-ideal cruise ship conditions for the next four days. When you heard those things, did you wonder how the passengers spent their time?

Now, with everybody safely home, some of them are beginning to share.

Although the situation never looked truly desperate, many of the folks still found themselves asking, "Although it doesn't seem likely, is this ship going to sink? If it does sink, will the crew be able get everybody off? How can I make sure I will be among those who are evacuated? Is this the way I'm going to leave this earth?"

Those questions motivated people to perform certain actions. For example,

* everybody made sure they knew the path to their designated lifeboat;

* everybody kept track of where they put their life vest and necessary valuables;

* everybody made sure they knew where their shipboard loved ones were.

Those are logical and sensible things to do.

There is one other thing some of the passengers did: they came together for Bible study. That's right, together they searched the Scriptures.

And if you're thinking Bible study is nowhere near as important as lifeboats and life vests, many of those folks have said the words of Scripture "put our hearts at ease" and "helped us feel at peace the whole time."

And if you're wondering what passages these adrift souls turned to, I encourage you to look at what is printed above. That passage from Joshua let the readers know the Lord was with them, that they didn't have to be afraid, that they didn't have to worry about the future or be discouraged with their present situation.

The Lord who had made them, redeemed them, and called them to faith ... remained with them. The Lord had not left them or forsaken them. On the contrary, because of their more-open hearts, He probably seemed closer to them on that dead-in-the-water ship than He did during normal times.

Just thought it was something worth remembering if you ever find yourself powerless and adrift.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, it's easy for me to think I'm at the wheel of my life's ship. I pray You will open my eyes, so I may appreciate Your guidance, presence and direction. Most of all may I always cling to the Savior who has, through His life-offering, brought us together. In His Name. Amen.

DEVOTION:  This is the law about beast and bird and every living creature that moves through the waters and every creature that swarms on the ground, to make a distinction between the unclean and the clean and between the living creature that may be eaten and the living creature that may not be eaten.  (Leviticus 11:46-47 ESV)

I don't know about you, but there aren't many things I won't eat.  I love food and I am willing to try just about anything.  It would drive me nuts to be under the restrictions that the Lord put the Israelites under, especially if I was starving because of a lack of food and there was a good meal right there waiting to be had, and I couldn't have it.

Isn't that how we are a lot of the time.  We want what we want and we want it now.  There is no delayed gratification.  There is no waiting anymore.  We have a hard time even waiting  minute and a fifteen seconds for the oatmeal to get done in the morning.

I am not sure of all the reasons for God giving the restrictions he gave in the Old Testament regarding clean and unclean foods.  I am sure there were myriads of reason for it.  I know that some of it had to do with the other nations around and their false sacrifices to other gods.  I know that some of these kinds of animals brought certain diseases with them.  I know that the creatures that crawled along the ground were associated with the serpent that deceived Eve.  Whatever the reasons for God's restrictions it was to care for His people.  It was to care for their needs.

The next time you aren't getting what you want think of it this way instead of thinking that God is punishing you or that God has something against you.  Think of it as God disciplining you because He loves you.  Think of it as God keeping bad things from you.  Think of it as God caring for your real needs instead of your felt needs.  Think of it as just a part of God's immeasurable and omniscient love!

Let us pray:  Lord God, thank you for caring for me even when I don't understand it or appreciate it.  Thank you for withholding things from me that you know won't be good for me.  Help me to understand these things and to fully rely on Your grace and truth Amen.

DEVOTION:
Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing. 1 Thessalonians 5:11

Laura King's three children were given a free ice cream for dessert.

Now I know that may not sound like a newsworthy topic to many of our Daily Devotion readers. Even so, I hope you will listen to what I think is an interesting story.

The tale begins when Laura King took her three children, ages two, three and eight, to the Sogno di Vino Restaurant in Poulsbo, Washington. The family ate their meal, paid their bill, and went home.

It was only when she was at her house that King noticed the bill wasn't exactly what it should have been. No, she hadn't been overcharged. On the contrary, the bill was $4 less than she expected. A handwritten note on the receipt explained why.

It said, "Discount. Well-behaved kids."

Rob Scott, the restaurant's owner, says servers have the discretion to offer a discount to customers. In this case the servers were incredibly impressed with the manners of the three children. Mrs. King is flattered, but she says, "The children only used the same manners they use at their home supper table."

That's the story of some free ice cream.

And now the point: You know, most of the time, most of us think of ourselves as being pretty good Christians. Recognizing we have been rescued from hell through the Savior's sacrifice, we try to glorify Him by making sure we walk the straight and narrow. Some of us like the straight and narrow so much we keep watch to make sure everyone else is walking as straight and narrow as we.

When the folks we are observing wander off that straight and narrow, we may pray for them, we may speak to them and, sad to say, sometimes we gossip about them. But this devotion is not about what we do when people go astray.

This devotion is about what we do when people are doing good, when they are walking right down the middle of God's straight and narrow path. What do we do then? Well, my friends, I can't speak for you, but I have to confess 95 times out of a 100, I don't do anything.

And that's sad.

It's sad that many of us often ignore Paul's words about encouraging and building each other up. It's tragic we spend far more time criticizing rather than complimenting. It's distressing that the staff at Sogno di Vino are more encouraging than I have been.

Thankfully, this is a shortcoming that can be easily remedied. All we need do is see the good others are doing and thank them for it -- and maybe buy them a $4 ice cream.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, today I pray my life may glorify the Savior, who gave Himself for my salvation. May I not only do what is right, may I also encourage others, as they struggle against the burdens and temptations a sinful world places before them. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

WEDNESDAY'S QUIZ: What were some of the restrictions on the king of Israel?   Only he must not acquire many horses for himself or cause the people to return to Egypt in order to acquire many horses, since the LORD has said to you, 'You shall never return that way again.' And he shall not acquire many wives for himself, lest his heart turn away, nor shall he acquire for himself excessive silver and gold.

DEVOTION: (from LHM Pastor Ken Klaus)

For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them. Romans 12:4-6

I didn't think I would ever say it but, as of tomorrow, Pope Benedict XVI and myself will have something in common. And if you're asking, "What is this common ground?" I can share that both of us will be retired.

When my wife heard about the pontiff's decision, she turned to me and said, "I didn't know a pope could retire." She can be forgiven for not knowing. The last pope who stepped down was Gregory XII, who served as pontiff 70 years before Martin Luther was born.

There have been others who have, as Canon Law decrees, resigned "from an ecclesiastical office for a just cause." Some resigned for a noble purpose. In that category could be put Gregory the XII, who resigned because he wished to put an end to division within the church. Others have stepped down under a cloud. Such a man was Marcellinus (296-304), who was deposed because he had, as the Roman Emperor Diocletian had ordered, made a sacrifice to idols.

So there you have it. Pastors, priests and popes are allowed to step away from the position in which they have been serving. Indeed, anyone can step down, if they feel God wants them somewhere else. I hope you noticed I didn't say they can step down because they don't want to do anything anymore.

The truth is God has a job for each of us to do. That job may change depending on situation and circumstance, but God, most certainly, has a job for you to do.

That's a pretty strong statement, and it's pretty all-inclusive. Even so, it is true.

I remember one lady in my congregation who was dying, for her death did not come swiftly or easily. The particular cancer she had was slow and caused a great amount of physical pain. Still, from a sick bed she recognized God had given her a job to do.

First, she wrote to her grandchildren. To those who were in the faith, she offered words of encouragement, and to those who had wandered away from Jesus, she encouraged their return. Second, she tried, as much as she was able, to offer a Christian witness to the doctors and nurses, who were caring for her. She felt her job was to be as good a patient as she could possibly be.

Eventually, the day came when the Savior took her home. Her work was finished. Can I tell you the results of that work? Three of her grandchildren told me how grandma's letter had brought them back to Jesus. And the hospital people ... if it had been possible, the hospital would have closed down for this Christian lady's funeral. As it was, only a skeleton crew remained on duty, while the rest of the staff came to the funeral to give thanks to God for a Christian woman, whose job had been to point them to Jesus. Their attendance said she had done that job well.

So, I don't know what job the Lord has in store for Benedict the XVI, and I don't know what work He has entrusted to you. But for me, I give thanks the work He has entrusted to me allows me to talk about Jesus with you.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, place me and use me in that place where I may serve You best. May my life be a witness to the wonders of the love and salvation I have received from Your Son. In His Name I pray it. Amen.

MONDAY'S QUIZ: What was a mother, who had just given birth, supposed to give as a burnt offering and as a sin offering?
"And when the days of her purifying are completed, whether for a son or for a daughter, she shall bring to the priest at the entrance of the tent of meeting a lamb a year old for a burnt offering, and a pigeon or a turtledove for a sin offering, and he shall offer it before the LORD and make atonement for her. Then she shall be clean from the flow of her blood. This is the law for her who bears a child, either male or female. And if she cannot afford a lamb, then she shall take two turtledoves or two pigeons, one for a burnt offering and the other for a sin offering. And the priest shall make atonement for her, and she shall be clean."
