DEVOTION:  From Lutheran Hour Ministry

(Jesus said) "Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.'" Matthew 25:41

Toward the end of September, I had the opportunity to speak at the LCMS Training and Equipping Conference for Prison and Jail Ministry.

While there I met many fascinating individuals and congregational representatives, who are doing great hands-on ministry for the 2.4 million prisoners in the U.S. It was interesting listening to these pioneers of prison ministry talk about maximum-security prisons, minimum-security facilities, and all kinds of prisons with all kinds of protection and precaution levels between these two.

Now, if I were given my druthers, I would prefer to stay out of all prisons, at least as a resident.

On the other hand, if I were going to be incarcerated, I think I'd like to be locked away at the only jail in American Samoa: the Territorial Correctional Facility. From recent news articles, that jail seems to have some perks that even America's minimum security jails lack.

Curious as to what they might be? I hope so, because I'm about to explain.

It appears the jailers, at least two of them, allowed the inmates out of prison to go buy beer and food. Apparently, it was a good arrangement: the criminals had their beer, and the guards ended up receiving potato chips and cookies.

The situation might have gone on unnoticed, if it weren't for the fact the prisoners didn't hide their contraband too well, and the jailers weren't very picky as to who they let go shopping. Apparently, the higher-ups took a dim view of letting out a man who is serving time for having attacked another individual with a machete. All of this explains why two of the guards have now become inmates in the Territorial Correctional Facility.

All of this takes me to the text for today's devotion. From what I've been told every prisoner has the hope that someday they will be released. Even though the judge has said they have "no possibility of parole," criminals still think some kind of weird circumstance or situation will give them their freedom.

Our text reminds us there is a prison from which there are no great escapes; there is no appeal; there are no retrials, and no clemency is ever accorded to those who are there. The Lord Jesus Himself refers to this prison as the place of "the eternal fire."

Thankfully, it is a prison to which no person need ever be sentenced.

Knowing the pain and suffering that awaits unsaved souls, the Lord sent His Son into this world to offer Himself as the ransom -- the payment -- which would offer clemency and forgiveness to all who were brought to faith in the Christ. To accomplish this job, which would grant forgiveness to a condemned world, Jesus lived a life of perfection and carried the sins we have committed. Then, when everything necessary to win our salvation had been accomplished, He allowed Himself to be nailed to a cross and die the death that should have been ours.

Isaiah 53:5 summed up Jesus' sacrifice by saying, "He was pierced for our transgressions; He was crushed for our iniquities; upon Him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with His wounds we are healed."

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord Jesus, for giving Yourself to win my salvation, You have my eternal gratitude. By Your suffering and death I have been given complete freedom, forgiveness and salvation. May my life express my gratitude. In Your Name. Amen.

STEWARDSHIP SPOLIGHT FOR THE MONTH OF OCTOBER IS PATRIOT PACKAGES
As we all know, our military forces are still spread throughout the world.  Many of our loved ones are deployed and arond the world and on bases throughout our own country.  Ptriot Packages, formerly known as G4U "Goodies for You" is a small yet effective way that we can care for all those men and women in a very real and practical way.  A group of people get together once a month to fill care packages to send out.  These packages have very specific items that these soldiers request, that are scarce or nonexistent where they are.

What they need from us is money so that they can buy the specific items they need.  As always, make checks payable to St. John's and in the memo line write "patriot Packages".  Also, as always, this should be above and beyond your regular offerings.

OUR ANNUAL CIRCUIT REFORMATION SERVICE IS SUNDAY, OCTOBER 28 at 2PM at St. John's.

There are three things I need.

1. People to be in the mass choir.  (You will have just one practice at 1pm.)  Let me know if you'd be willing to be in this choir.  Toni Schwartz will be directing it as well as playing organ for the service.

2.  Hosts and/or hostesses for a  small reception in the overflow before the service (especially for those who will sing in the choir) and after the service for those who would like to stay for a little while afterward.  All you would do is set up and clean up including drinks, coffee, tea, lemonade.

3. I would also like to have several people donate cookies, brownies, etc. for this.  Please let me know if you would be willing to donate.

DEVOTION: 2 Corinthians 9:6-12  The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.  Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.  And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having al sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.  As it is written " he has ditributed freely, he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever.  He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righeousness.  You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God.  For the ministry of this service is not only supplying the needs of the saints but is also overflowing in many thanksgivings to God.

Last night, at our special voters meeting it was approved 50-10 to call a DCE (Director of Christian Education) who is also skilled in leading worship music (choirs and bell choir) .  What a blessed joy it is to know that we care about our worship and our children/youth as much as we do.  We want to spare no expense to provide for our children's spiritual needs.  We want to make sure they hav every opportunity to grow in Christ.

The challenge is this.  A worker is worth his/her wages.  A church worker cannot live on air.  He/she needs to be able to earn a living wage so that he./she can do his/her job with confidence without hindrance.  This DCE will be called as soon as we have a solid plan in place to be able to pay for it.    This plan must be approved by the church council.  A committee will be appointed to come up with this plan very soon!!  But the plan isn't going to succeed if the whole congregation doesn't get behind it and do what is necessary.  It will only remain a plan.  Our present budget cannot support it.  It has to be raised.  The only way it can be raised is if we receive more in our weekly offerings.

God is good!  he provides what we need.  How many times have we heard this, spoken this, or thought this?  Does God provide out of thin air?  NO!  he provides through his creation and through his children.  He provides through you and through me.  I'm sure that you have heard, "It is more blessed to give than to receive."  You know who first said that?  IT WAS JESUS.  Does Jesus lie?  Can you beieve Jesus?  Then show you believe it by your actions!

Jesus knew where true blessings come from.  The true blessings, the true goodness, the true joy comes from giving the goodnes of God to others.  If it were not so, he wouldn't give us the responsibility to do it.  he would just do it himself.  he would cut out the middle man.  Joy comes from sharing the love of Christ.  It comes from giving all the good things you have received from God away so that others may enjoy them and live from them.  Even your faith has been given, not so you can keep it for yourself, but so you can give it away to others!

These next few months are the key. You have heard the phrase "Put your money where your mouth is."  I want to change that up a little bit.  How about, "Put your money where your faith is".

Prayer:  Lor dGod help us to put all that we have where our faith is, our money, our time, our things, our abilities, so that you may use them for Your glory!  Amen.

DEVOTION:
"Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God.  Truly I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it."  And he took them up in His arms and blessed them, laying His hands on them.

THERE IS A SPECIAL VOTER'S MEETING TONIGHT!!  SUPPER WILL BE SERVED AT 6:30 AND THE MEETING WILL START PROMPTLY AT 7!

Over the past eleven years, and dare I venture to say that it was the same way before I started as pastor here, the congregation has said, in many and various ways, that children and youth of the congregation are most important to us.

We want to make sure our kids are safe and secure in their Christian faith.  We want to know that they are well taken care of whaen it comes to the knowledge of their Lord and Savior Jesus.  We don't want to leave anything to question or to chance.

Tonight, at our meeting, we will have an opportunity to work towards that goal.  We will be voting on whether or not to call a DCE/Music minister (DCE stands for director of Christian education).  THis person will work towards making sure our kids have every opportunity to hear the Gospel, grow in their faith, and live out that faith in their daily lives.  This person will also be able to lead our music ministry so that we may worship the Lord fully and ot the best of our ability and His glory in song.

We spend an awful lot of money on our kids, don't we?  Music lessons, sports teams, tutoring, not to mention all of that technology stuff that they always seem to need.  We do this to invest in their future, to make sur ethey have every opportunity to succeed in this world and to live lives free of hindrances.  What better investment is there to invest in their faith and their spiritual lives?  I can't think of anything.  There is nothing more important.

IF YOU ARE A PARENT OR GANDPARENT, PLEASE COME TO THE MEETING TONIGHT!!  It is very important that you be there.  BABYSITTING WILL BE PROVIDED BY CARA KLAUSTERMEIER AND ANYONE WHO MAY WANT TO HELP HER!

Prayer:  Lord God, help us to grow our children in their faith so that the church might continue to grow throughout the next generations.

DEVOTION:
Then Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who were instructing the people said to them all, "This day is sacred to the Lord your God.  Do not mourn or weep."  For all the people had been weeping as they listened to the words of the law.  Nehemiah 8:9-10

One of the greatest stories that often goes untold is the story of the Israelites returning to Jerusalem and the reading of the law before the people.   It is very interesting to see the reaction of the people to the hearing of the law.  They wept.  They sat in sackcloth and ashes.  They mourned over their sin.  They were horrified at how they had negelcted God and worshipped idols instead.  They were ashamed of themselves as they heard what the Lord's will was for their lives and realized that they had not even begun to accomplish it.  They were guilty and they knew it.

You can run away from your problems all you want.  You can deny your guilt from sun up to sun down.  You can fill your lives with stuff and never feel a sense of peace, because your sin hasn't been dealt with.  You haven't confessed and turned from it and so the sickness is still there.  You can mask the symptoms for a while, but eventually your sickness of sin will overtake you.

It is wonderful to be able to confess our sins to God, because we know that when we do we will be relieved of our anguish and guilt.  We know that He has taken our sins to the cross and put them to death there.  They are removed from us as far as the east is from the west.

Nehemiah, Ezra, and the Levites told the people not to mourn and weep.  They knew that the Lord was being gracious and merciful to them.  They knew that the Lord would provide a Savior from sin.  When you go to church on SUnday (or whenever you go) you may get there with a heavy heart full of sin and disappointment, full of guilt and bitterness.  Don't stay that way!  Confess your sins to God!  Give them to Him!  Don't stay at hthe cross!  Go to the empty tomb!It is empty because He isn't there!  He has risen from the dead!

Rejoice that your sins are forgiven!  Rejoice that they have been dealt with on the cross!  Have peace in your heart and joy in your life!  Christ is risen!  he is risen indeed!  Alleluia!

Prayer:  Lord God, help me to quit dwelling ont he past.  help me to live in thepresent and future forgiveness that You have won for me on the cross, so that Imay rejoice with all the rest of the saints.  Amen!
