DEVOTION:  Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Ephesians 5:15-16

If I read the above passage rightly, the eviler the day, the wiser we should walk.

And if that is the case, I have some concerns about a practice recently introduced at a number of congregations this year, including one in Cincinnati: Mount Healthy United Methodist Church.

Now I understand Pastor Patricia Anderson Cook was confident she was doing the right thing. Her confidence was based on the fact she had prayed and deliberated about it. She told the news: "I thought about what Jesus would do, and I'm pretty sure He wouldn't require a mass or a worship service. I'm pretty sure He was out there healing people and touching them with His fingers, even healing someone with spit and dirt, and healing their eyes."

Now while Pastor Cook didn't try to imitate the Savior by healing people, she did follow her Lord by not having an Ash Wednesday worship service, either. Instead of asking people to go into church, this past Ash Wednesday Pastor Cook decided to apply ashes to people by allowing them to drive up in their cars.

Yup, you heard that rightly.

On Ash Wednesday, from 5 to 6 p.m., a person could drive up to Mount Healthy United Methodist Church, and the pastor would apply ashes while he or she remained sitting in their car.

It was Pastor Cook's hope this would reach people who might have personal issues, mobility issues or just feel more comfortable worshipping in their cars and trucks. As she said, (my) "Jesus was an outdoors kind of guy. He came to where they (the people) were, and I want to come where people are comfortable."

It occurs to me that Pastor Cook, like so many others, has focused her attention on only one part of the Savior. It is true that Jesus came to people where they were. He worked with them at weddings and at wells, while they sat in a tree in Jericho or when He hung from a tree in Jerusalem. Sadly, too many people forget that when Jesus worked with these people, He didn't leave them as they were; He changed them.

Lent, including Ash Wednesday, is all about change. Lent is one of the times in the church calendar when Christians reflect on their sins and pray they might be given a repentant heart and a changed life. Most of all, Lent is a time to thank the Lord that Jesus left heaven and came to earth, so He might be the God-given sacrifice that would pay for our redemption.

And I'm not sure you can do that by driving up to a church and stopping for a few seconds.

Let me put it this way: if my son gave his life for you, I'd be pretty disappointed if all you did to show your appreciation would be to drive past the funeral home and wave. It would show me that my son's death just wasn't all that important to you. And, that, dear brothers and sisters ought not to be so.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord Jesus, You became one of us. This You did so we, and our eternal destiny, might be changed. Let us show our appreciation for Your sacrifice. In Your Name. Amen.

update on Libby Pailer

Libby's surgery is scheduled for tomorrow 3-15-12 first thing in the morning. It will be open heart surgery to repair or perhaps  replace the mitral valve and repair the tricusped valve.  Right now the blood is leaking backwards a lot every time her heart pumps and has enlarged one chamber of her heart quite a bit.  He said the surgery would last at least 5 hours and then she'll be in the ICU. If all goes well she'll stay in the hospital for 4-5 days after surgery. She should be back to normal activity 8 weeks after surgery which is an estimate of course.  Once she has healed she should feel a whole lot better than she has for a long time.  Maybe she'll even wait hand and foot on my dad (just the opposite as we all know ;-)

We were very impressed with the surgeon, he spent a lot of time explaining the procedure and we had a lesson in the anatomy of the heart.
Right now mom is in room 4094 at Mercy Heart Hospital  (St. John's for all of you who know St. Louis) if you want to see or talk to her today. After she's out of surgery and the ICU we'll give you her new room number. We appreciate your love and concern.  Keep those prayers coming.

Love and Blessings to all of you,  Larry (aka Bimmy, Grandpa & Papa) Renee & Teresa

DEVOTION:  Jesus said) "You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about Me." John 5:39

When I grew up, there was a television program called, You Are There.

Using a TV news format, the program took the viewer back in time to various historical events. The landing of the Hindenburg, the Salem witchcraft trials, the Gettysburg address, and even the trial of Jesus all were given an episode.

Now it appears You Are There is becoming a reality.

Let me explain. Recently, Daniel Wallace, professor at Dallas Theological Seminary, announced that seven New Testament papyri have been discovered. Six of those writings are from the second century and, one, a fragment of the book of Mark, probably originates in the first.

Simply stated, that means the papyrus was written during the time when eyewitnesses of Jesus' resurrection could still have been alive.

So, what does that mean to the average Joe and Jane?

Since this manuscript would be about 150 years older than any other New Testament Gospel fragment we have, it would imply that it probably is more accurate. That's because there would have been fewer copies made and, therefore, fewer errors made by the copyists.

Indeed, this manuscript moves us 150 years closer to the time our beloved Lord and Savior walked the earth.

Now the manuscripts are not due to be released until next year. I have not seen them, nor has anyone else I know. Even so, I am willing to go out on a limb and, without claiming any prophetic ability, make the following predictions: I predict after this manuscript has been compared with other ancient texts, there will be no glaring or major changes. Further, I predict this manuscript will offer no modifications that might impact any major or minor doctrine.

Once again, in making these predictions I lay no claim to having any prophetic gifts.

What I do claim is a belief that God's Word is God's Word, and the Holy Spirit has protected it, so we might be confident we have an accurate record of God's entire plan of salvation.

This is why, when the manuscripts are published, I pray you will join me in giving thanks that, once more, the Lord has told us the Savior's story of salvation is faithful and true. In fact we can do that right now.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, the Holy Scriptures tell the story of how Your Son paid the price necessary to forgive our sins and save our souls. May we be truly grateful for all You have done, including giving us a book which can be trusted to tell the truth. In Jesus' Name I give thanks. Amen.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ:  What was placed in the ark of the covenant? In the book of Exodus only the tablets of the ten commandments are mentioned, later on a jar of manna, and Aaron's staff are also mentioned as being part of the contents.
(Dolores Deblaze is our winner.)

Here is a more detailed explanation from good ole wikipedia:
The Ark of the Covenant is a chest described in the Book of Exodus[1] as solely containing the Tablets of Stone on which the Ten Commandments were inscribed. According to some traditional interpretations of the Book of Exodus,[2] Book of Numbers,[3] and the Letter to the Hebrews[4] the Ark also contained Aaron's rod, a jar of manna and the first Torah scroll as written by Moses; however, the first of the Books of Kings says that at the time of king Solomon, the Ark contained only the two Tablets of the Law.[5] According to the Book of Exodus, the Ark was built at the command of God, in accordance with the instructions given to Moses on Mount Sinai.[6] God was said to have communicated with Moses "from between the two cherubim" on the Ark's cover.[7] _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Libby Pailer update

Lib had an aterial scan of the heart, an echo scope, but Cardiologist coulnd't get her to swallow the throat echo scanner. Her blood pressure came down after they took some fluid away from her lungs. That was causing the pressure on her chest. The Cardiologist said with certainty that the valve was operable. He didn't sound overly cautious. She was transferred to Mercy hospital on ballas road St. Louis at 4:00 PM. She will not be operated  on Tuesday. The surgeon has patients that are in bad shape and need to be operated as soon as possible. Tuesday will be more tests and rest. There is no garantee that she will be operated on wednesday either. I will up date when I know more, Thank all of you for your prayers. Keep "em coming.
Love to you all from Lib and I

more prayers for Libby Pailer

Hello everyone. This morning 3/11/12 at about 5:30 Am Lib woke me and said we have to go to the emergency room in Washington MO. She was admitted with Tightness of breath, upset stomach, and gurgling in her chest. They took a cardiagram. It showed some fibbulation. The worst was her blood pressure. It was 205 over 145. They spent the morning trying to get that down with meds and IVs. One time it would be lower then spike again. The cardiologist came in around 2PM. He told Lib,Teresa, Suzy, and I that she had leakage in the Mitral and aterial valves. They are monitoring her in ICU. Tommorrow they will take a throat to heart echo scope. That is to take a closer look at the valves. After that they will give her an aterial to heart scope. They will know more as to how to procede after the tests. That won't be until the afternoon. I will keep all informed. Keep up the prayers. My Libby has apositive outlook and is in good spirits. She says the Lord will take care of her. Please Please keep up your prayers.

Jonas's Updates

Friday, March 9

Posted 1 day ago
When Jonas did not make counts to get admitted last Friday they rescheduled him for the next Friday (today). This was suprising news, since they would usually try again asap, like Monday or Tuesday. But we did not complain one little bit because the wait would be a nice, long, welcome relief from the non-stop debilitating effects of the chemo. Little did we know that our friend Luke Minx was coming into town and had a great big surprise in mind with the concert on Friday night- the same day that Jonas was going to be admitted for chemo. Well, Jonas was just not going to miss this concert! On Monday we contacted our nurse practitioner and asked if Jonas could come in any other day but Friday. She responded by telling us that they would fit him in on Tuesday (which was the very next day).
Tuesday afternoon, once we were all checked in, Jonas got a surprise visit from Luke in his hospital room at Children's Mercy! What a welocme surprise! They sat and talked for almost an hour. Luke shared information about his family, about being away at school and about being on American Idol. Jonas shared information about his illness and his treatment. Luke told Jonas that he is an inspiration to so many people, and reminded him that this whole community cares for him and has got his back -- just waiting for him to get back in the game. That held a lot of weight for Jonas. A friend, a hometown talent - branching out in the world, a kid he looks up to, spurring him on. Just that little visit made the two day hospital stay breeze by.
Well here we are now on Friday, looking forward to the concert tonight.
The reality is that Jonas' counts have been dropping since Wednesday and he is feeling pretty peaked. This morning he is looking very pale, the skin around his eyes is very pink, and he feels cool and clammy to the touch. He will have to wear a mask over his mouth and nose and refrain from too much physical contact because he just can't afford another round with infection like he did in February. But Jonas is really hoping to see Luke rock the house! He is a fantastic performer with a beautiful voice. If you cannot go to the concert, but would still like to make a donation, Luke has made that possible too. You can do that online.
Go to LukeMinx.com/Jonas/
I owe a public apology to Kelli Jordan and Verlene Kling. This past weekend I let the ball drop and flaked out individually on two dear people with whom I had made arrangements. I'm sorry for going AWOL. I will make it up to you both. I'm sorry that I infringed on your time and did not come through. I value your help and your friendships and I'm hoping you will let me make a rain check.
Youth Baseball sign-ups were this past weekend in Lee's Summit! Can you believe it? We are fast approaching practice season. Coach Shawn James called to see if Jonas would still be on his team this year. Wow. You wanna know what kind of thing will bring tears to Jonas' eyes? (okay, mine, too?) Well this is it. Shawn said that he would love to have Jonas on the team just so that when treatment is over and Jonas is feeling up to it... he can have even one turn at bat! Since treatment will be over in May (hopefully) and baseball season goes through July, that will give Jonas some wiggle room to get a little muscle built up and get out on the field. Something wonderful to look forward to! Jonas has always said that while he enjoys watching a good game of baseball or knowing stats on professional players, etc.. what he really loves is to PLAY baseball. More than anything he wants to be able to be involved! Thank you for including him, Shawn. That is how you win a boy's heart. Jonas says that regardless of whether or not he can play, he is going to try to come sit on the bench in his uniform for as many games as he can. I can't wait to hear that kid say, "Put me in coach. I'm ready to play today!"
I hope to see you folks at the concert tonight. I sill haven't written all I would like. I guess I will try again to wrap it up tomorrow.

Caroline has a MAIster Singers choir concert tonight so we can't be there, but we are with you in spirit and are huge fans of Luke's from back when he used to do high school theatre with several of my sister's voice students. He's such a talented kid, and thankful he's got such a big heart. Jonas, I'm so glad you're able to get to be at the concert. You are a rock, my Dear. I never cease to be impressed with your strength.

Hope to see you guys tonight at the concert!!! :)

You don't owe me any kind of apology! Don't worry about it - I was sitting here thinking I'd flaked on you because I hadn't checked in recently! No matter how often we see or hear from you (or you hear from us!) know we are praying every day for Jonas and you. I wish we could be at the concert but we can't make it. While we were signing up for baseball, Cam and I were both thinking how great it would be to play with - or even against - Jonas!

DEVOTION:  When the large crowd of the Jews learned that Jesus was there, they came, not only on account of Him but also to see Lazarus, whom He had raised from the dead. So the chief priests made plans to put Lazarus to death as well because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus. John 12:9-11

In Arabic the town is still known as al-Izzariya, that is, "The house of Lazarus." You can, if you wish, go to the grave which was, according to ancient traditions, the place where Jesus' friend was first buried.

You know the story. You know how Jesus had been told His friend was sick, but arrived to find Lazarus had already been buried for four days. You know how Jesus stood before that tomb and summoned His friend back to life.

What most people forget is that the raising of Lazarus is -- more than anything else Jesus did -- responsible for the religious authorities plotting His murder.

True, Jesus had raised other people from the dead. But those miracles had taken place far away in Galilee, where the unsophisticated souls could easily be fooled. For a number of reasons the raising of Lazarus was different:

1. It was different because Lazarus was well known by many.

2. It was different because Lazarus' death was very real and not some hoax.

3. It was different because Lazarus had been dead for a lengthy period of time.

That is why when Lazarus came out of his tomb, people started to believe on Jesus. I should think so. It's difficult not to believe when something happens, which only God's Son could do.

Lazarus is why the Pharisees and the chief priests came together to put Jesus into a tomb. And, as long as they were at it, they decided to get rid of Lazarus, too. After all, their thinking went, as long as Lazarus is alive, people will still believe that Jesus was the Messiah, the Savior.

Scripture doesn't give us the time, the place or the cause of Lazarus' second death. It does, however, tell us that these religious leaders were successful in putting Jesus' into His borrowed grave.

Back then there must have been some serious rejoicing when the Savior was put in His sealed and guarded tomb. They thought they had found a permanent solution to the Redeemer. Over the years there have been others who thought they also had been successful in reburying the Savior and stopping His salvation story from being told.

They thought they had been successful, but they weren't.

They weren't successful because Jesus won't stay dead, even as He won't stay buried.

Lazarus knew, the whole world should know that Jesus told the truth when He said to Lazarus' sister ... "I am the Resurrection and the Life. Whoever believes in Me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in Me shall never die" (John 11:25b-26).

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, every age produces people who try to push Jesus back into that tomb. May they be brought to know their error and Your truth, which says whoever lives and believes on Him will never die. May this be and remain our resurrection hope. In Jesus' Name. Amen
