St. John's Group Email Wednesday, April 20, 2011 (amended)

DEVOTION:
For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons. ... Romans 8:14-15a

Patrick is a pit bull, a breed of dog many people try to avoid.

Apparently, Patrick's owner should be included in that group. I say that because the individual, who will remain nameless in this devotion, tied Patrick to a railing in her Nevada apartment building. Then she went to visit some friends.

For a week she visited her friends.

While she visited, Patrick waited. Patrick waited for his owner's return. He waited to be fed. He waited to be given some water. Eventually a mailman found Patrick at the bottom of a trash chute. By then Patrick was curled up into a ball, unable to stand.

Patrick was rushed to a veterinary clinic.

The vets examined the dog and experience told them Patrick was a goner -- a dog without hope. They agreed that Patrick would die as he had lived: unwanted and alone.

That's what logic said should have happened.

What did happen was quite different. The doctors felt sorry for Patrick. They gave him therapy, a special diet and some transfusions. And Patrick responded. He put on weight. Before long a grateful Patrick started following his benefactors all around the clinic. Indeed, appreciation became a 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week kind of job for the rescued pooch.

And at this point I probably don't need to say Patrick's story ought to be our story.

Because of sin and Satan we were chained up -- doomed and destined to die eternally.

Logically there was no other choice. After all, Scripture says the soul that sins will die. But God's Word also tells us, in spite of this logic, a gracious God sent His only Son into this world to rescue us. By living the perfect life that was beyond us, by dying the death we deserved, Jesus took our place and carried our sins.

Because of what Jesus has done for us all who have been given faith in Him will not perish but are given everlasting life.

This ought to take us to one other similarity between Patrick and us; like the rescued, no-longer-unwanted dog, grateful Christians ought to live their lives in thanksgiving to our Divine Rescuer and Redeemer.

THE PRAYER: Dear Heavenly Father, please accept the praises of those whom You have rescued. Because of Your grace, Jesus was made both our Substitute and Savior. May I be filled with a sense of gratitude for His sacrifice? This I pray in His Name. Amen.

CARE PROCESS TO START WEDNESDAY,  APRIL 27 AT 6:30pm with a congregation meeting.
The leaders of our church and many others would appreciate as many people being there as possible.

Let me know if you need someone to watch your kids so you can be there.

Even if you have no conflicts within the church, it would be good for you to be there to lend your encouragement and support to those who need it and to show your concern for your brothers and sisters in Christ.  Besides, you may have use for some of the things you learn in other parts of your life.

I really want you all to make every effort to be there.  I will find a babysitter for you if you need one.

St. John's Group Email Jeremy Klaustermeier needs your help

Hey everyone,

One of my wonderful friends, not sure who (they get to remain anonymous), nominated me to be "arrested" for Jerry's Kids (The Muscular Dytrophy Association).  I get to be arrested on May 19.

My bail has been set at $1,000.00 and if everyone I know makes a tax-deductible donation, I'll reach my goal quickly!

Just click here to make a secure, online donation before 05/19/11. This is a fun event benefiting individuals and families served by MDA who are affected by neuromuscular disease. I am honored to partner with MDA, and help this important cause.

Don't hesitate to call or e-mail me with any questions.

Thanks in advance for your help. Together we'll make a difference.

Pastor

GREETINGS ALL YOU St. John's C.H.U.R.C.H. Ministry go-getters!!!!!!!!!!       (Christians Helping Uplift R(our) Community in Him  Ministry)

It's that time again!!

On Thursday, May 5, 2011 we are hosting a National Day of Prayer observance like we did last year.  We are serving a continental breakfast in the church overflow area from 6:30 AM - 7:00 AM.  Everyone is invited.

At 7:00 AM Pastor Klaustermeier will begin a prayer and devotion time in our sanctuary with music by Gene Hilgendorf.

You all have another opportunity to help out by donating the items for the breakfast.  We did have a pretty good turnout last year; but we never really know how many to expect.  I believe the following list should be plenty to serve the folks who come that morning.  Hopefully, some of our Little Lambs and their parents will be able to attend before school begins at 8:15 AM.  And...hopefully more of our St. John's family will be there to greet and meet all of our guests from the neighborhood!  We have had many folks from other Christian churches in Warrenton join us and that has been a real blessing to get to know other believers in Jesus.

DEVOTION:
And when He (Jesus) drew near and saw the city, He wept over it. Luke 19:41

For all but three years of my parish ministry I had a parochial school.

That means I had a quarter-century of opening-day emotions. On that day I often tried to get down to the kindergarten to help with the tears, the sobs, the feeling of loneliness and lostness ... and that was from the moms.

Sometimes I was even asked to help with the children who were upset.

Most of the time our teachers took care of things. They would take a child to the side, give a hug, and talk quietly and patiently with the distraught little one. It was amazing to see the miraculous transformation those teachers could bring about.

Apparently a kindergarten in Virginia Beach, Virginia, has a different technique.

There a kindergartner, Bronson Clark, was upset about having to leave mom. He was so upset he did some serious crying. For that grave infraction of the rules the little one was given an out-of-school suspension. You see this particular kindergarten has a zero-tolerance policy in regard to children disturbing a class -- and a lonely child's tears are a disturbance.

It is my hope that you and all those you know do not have a similar policy in regard to Jesus and the tears He shed.

If you look at the Savior's life, you will find a number of times He cried. Jesus cried at the tomb of His dead friend, Lazarus; He cried for the city of Jerusalem, which He knew, in a few short years, would be destroyed; He cried out from the cross as He allowed Himself to be sacrificed for our forgiveness and salvation.

Did you ever think there is a pattern there? Look carefully and you will see Jesus always cried and cried out for others ... not for Himself. Yes, in the Garden of Gethsemane He prayed, if it were possible, that the cup of suffering might be removed from Him, but even there Jesus put us first.

The depth of Jesus' concern for the world's sinners is something beyond my understanding. If I had been in the Savior's place and looking at Jerusalem in the distance, I would not have been brought to tears by her upcoming destruction.

On the contrary, I probably would have murmured something like: "Reject me, will you? Jerusalem, you're looking at some nasty times ahead. You can count on them. After all you have rejected me, haven't you?"

This is just one of the many reasons why Jesus is the Savior and I am the person being saved; it's the reason I'm the sinner being rescued and He's God's Son who is doing the rescuing.

And that's why -- as a forgiven and redeemed sinner -- I'm going to try to live in a way that will make the Savior smile and not cry.

THE PRAYER: Lord, I give thanks that Jesus cared so much for sinners. Now, as a redeemed member of the family of faith, may I live in a way that shows my appreciation. In His Name. Amen.

St. John's Group Email Prayer request for Robyn McNew's brother Ken Meyer

Below is an urgent prayer request from Robyn McNew.

My brother Ken had cardiac arrest last night maybe like 4 times for 3-5 minutes each. They operated and fixed the 100% blockage, but he is unresponsive. They don't know if he has any brain damage, and if so, how extensive it is. They are performing a protocol where they cool his body to 33 degrees and wait to see if it can stabilize. We might know if he is going to wake up in the next 3 days. Please pray for him and my family that is still saddened by my brother Kevin's death in August. He is gravely ill in ICU at DePaul Hospital in St. Ann.

DEVOTION:  Then the Pharisees went out, and held a council against Him, how they might destroy Him. Matthew 12:14

Here's a question for you fellas out there who have a daughter: Is there any man in the world who is good enough to be her husband? I know your answer already. The only question is how long did it take you to give that answer?

That maybe explains why we have kind of a sick smile on our faces when the minister asks, "Who gives this woman to be married to this man?" We say, "Her mother and I do," but we really want to say, "Me and my baby girl are outta here. I've been against this wedding from the beginning."

Of course, we're usually the only folks who feel that way.

Not so for Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Threatening to disrupt their wedding are terrorists and anarchists and anti-monarchists along with a whole gaggle of other protesters.

Poor kids. They've got too many groups against them.

This is pretty much the way Jesus must have felt when He was here on earth. In the text above it was the Pharisees who were trying to kill Him. Look in other passages and you will find the Sadducees were after Him, as were the Herodians, as were the ...

So many groups were plotting His murder. They need not have bothered. Even before He was born He was headed to the cross. Before He ever took His first nap in that Bethlehem manger, He was set on the path that would end at Golgotha.

Amazingly, even though He knew where His path was going, even though He fully knew what He would have to endure, Jesus continued on.

And He did so carrying our sins.

It was His Father's will and wish. It was the fulfillment of the plan that would cleanse us of our sins and open the doors of heaven to all who believe.

Yes, Jesus continued on and I am thankful He finished His work on the cross and showed us His Resurrection Day victory.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord and Heavenly Father, I pray You will watch over the young royals and all those who will soon be married. Be with all of us and allow us to stand firm in the faith. This I ask in Jesus' Name. Amen.

St. John's Group Email Prayer request from Gene Hilgendorf

As of yesterday, I was notified that my sister has been taken off treatments for her cancer. She has fought a valient fight but has lost the battle. Five years is a long time of suffering and I hope and pray that she will be able to spend her remaining time at home with her family and friends. Two to threemonths is the time given but I'm guessing it will be sooner than that. Not my time to say when but her body has taken a beating and has just lost it's ability to fight infection and any other type of bug that comes along. Her name is Gertie Bessert and would appreciate including her in our prayers  now and Sunday. Thanks

There is no one signed up for this Sunday (Palm Sunday and Confirmation Sunday) and the late service on Easter.  These are two very important services and it would be really nice to have someone set for those days so I am not rushing aorund looking for someone on Confirmation day and Easter Sunday right before the service.

Please, please, please volunteer!

Peace on your day!
