DEVOTION: John 15:1-8 English Standard Version (ESV)
I Am the True Vine
15 "I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. 7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ What is a "song of ascent" in the Psalms?
From Don Nolte: "Psalms of Ascent" are 120-34 based on their titles. Exact meaning of the title is unknown, but two possibilities are likely. "Ascents" could refer to the 15 steps in the temple between the Court of Women and the Court of the Israelites. The psalms were perhaps read or sung on the steps during the great festivals. The title could also refer to the religious pilgrimages each year going to Jerusalem. The psalms would be sung as the worshipers approached Jerusalem's hills. The Psalms of Ascents have no single theme, though they are all short and frequently mention Zion and Jerusalem.
From Pat King: Oh! I know this, and I didn't even have to look it up! But why, a choir member isn't answering, is beyond me. So, a "song of ascent" is one of those hymns that the choir sings while walking – or in the case of some of our choir, hobbling – up stairs. No lie!
There are 15 of them (Psalms 120-134; or 119-133 in the Septuagint and the Vulgate) – which corresponds to the 15 steps that led into the inner courtyard in the Temple. They were sung by the Levite priests who were going there. Also, pilgrims would sing these songs – as did the captives returning from Babylon.
Anyway, you can read all about it anywhere online, or here: Song of Ascents for Dummies: https://www.chabad.org/library/article_cdo/aid/655450/jewish/What-is-a-Song-of-Ascents.htm
