March 2, 2018 | | | All Nations Church Uses Grand Opening To Raise Money for Public School District

When All Nations Church, a church plant of the Missouri District in University City, celebrated the Grand Opening of their new storefront property, they decided to use it as an opportunity to serve their community.
"We know the heart-cry of our community is save our kids, and save our schools," said Pastor Chris Paavola, "so while people might not care about a new church in town, they'll care about what we do for their kids. This was a chance to demonstrate our vision to be a church that prospers the city." At their Saturday Open House, for every signature they received, All Nations Church gave $1 to the School District of University City, an amount that was matched dollar-for-dollar by an anonymous donor. In addition, they added the entire offering from their Sunday morning service to that amount and presented to the School District at the end of the service. "We're an urban community," said Pastor Chris, "and our average monthly household offering is $125. So it was a bit of a step of faith to invite the School District to our services not knowing what we'd be able to raise for them."

PHOTO CREDIT: Lihau Lewis But God stirred the hearts of the people, and All Nations Church presented an oversized check of $3,100.50 to Superintendent Hardin. With tears in her eyes she thanked All Nations Church, "My heart is so full. Just knowing that our schools have your support means the world to us. Thank you."

Recently during President's Day weekend, the Missouri District hosted high school youth for a Peer Ministry Training at Sojourn Retreat Center. Led by six Missouri District adult trainers, 40+ youth stepped bravely into an environment where they were challenged to be present with one another. With no devices to hide behind each group went headfirst into the experience driven training. The youth not only learned how to say 'hello' to each other, but rather they greeted each other with open arms as they learned new names and new stories. They didn't simply learn about listening, they actively listened and cared for those who shared from the heart. In addition to sitting at the feet of Jesus in hearing God's Word, they became the hands and feet of Jesus by ministering to one another. Read more . . .
| | | | Cheryl Haun Named 2018 LEA Distinguished Lutheran Early Childhood Administrator
Cheryl Haun was selected to receive Lutheran Education Association's 2018 Distinguished Lutheran Early Childhood Administrator award. Ms. Haun is the director of early childhood education at Zion Lutheran School in St. Charles, Mo. Zion's early childhood program is host to more than 200 children ages 18 months through kindergarten. She leads, mentors, and coaches 36 teachers and their assistants as well as plans programs, develops curriculum and parent engagement, and manages public relations. In addition, Cheryl serves in many capacities for a large variety of Lutheran early childhood initiatives. Ms. Haun was selected by the LEA Leadership and Early Childhood Networks. All Parish Nurses and Health Ministers serving in LCMS Congregations as well as those who have served in the past are invited to participate in the second Missouri District Parish Nurse Convocation. The Convocation is designed to affirm and encourage Parish Nurses and Health Ministers. The planning committee has utilized the evaluations and discussion summary from the 2017 Missouri District Parish Nurse Convocation to plan the program. The schedule provides time for participant sharing and networking. President Lee Hagan will lead the opening Bible study and Rev. Gene Wyssmann will facilitate discussion. Participants are encouraged to bring brochures, display boards, information about programs that were both successful and unsuccessful. The Singing Saints, the fifty-voice concert choir of Saint Paul Lutheran High School, Concordia, Mo., under the direction of Dr. Jerrode Baker Marsh, will present a concert of sacred choral music at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 12345 Manchester Road, Des Peres, MO on March 20, 2018, at 7 p.m.
The concert program features choral works that focus on our call as Christians to rejoice with voice and instrument in this world, because we know that heaven will be our eternal home. The diverse musical program spans many centuries and represents many cultures. Works performed will be from the Latin Renaissance, Baroque and Classical, American Colonial-era, African-American Spirituals, along with songs from the South African, French Taizé, and American Appalachian traditions.
The Singing Saints Choir is under the leadership of Dr. Jerrode Baker Marsh, who in the fall of 2015 came to Saint Paul Lutheran High School from Frankfurt, Germany, where she worked for nearly two decades as a professional musician, performing as a pianist, conductor and collaborative artist throughout Europe, as well as working as a church music director.The award-winning Singing Saints Choir has toured annually since 1973 with over 1,000 appearances in 29 states and Canada. In 1994, 2006, and 2013, they performed as part of a mass choir in Carnegie Hall in New York City.The choir will embark on its first international choir tour in May 2018, where they will sing in Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, and Hungary. Saint Paul Lutheran High School is a four-year residential high school of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.
