DEVOTION: Psalm 27:1-9English Standard Version (ESV)
The Lord Is My Light and My Salvation
Of David.
27 The Lord is my light and my salvation;
whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold[a] of my life;
of whom shall I be afraid?
2 When evildoers assail me
to eat up my flesh,
my adversaries and foes,
it is they who stumble and fall.
3 Though an army encamp against me,
my heart shall not fear;
though war arise against me,
yet I will be confident.
4 One thing have I asked of the Lord,
that will I seek after:
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
all the days of my life,
to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord
and to inquire in his temple.
5 For he will hide me in his shelter
in the day of trouble;
he will conceal me under the cover of his tent;
he will lift me high upon a rock.
6 And now my head shall be lifted up
above my enemies all around me,
and I will offer in his tent
sacrifices with shouts of joy;
I will sing and make melody to the Lord.
7 Hear, O Lord, when I cry aloud;
be gracious to me and answer me!
8 You have said, "Seek my face."
My heart says to you,
"Your face, Lord, do I seek."
9 Hide not your face from me.
Turn not your servant away in anger,
O you who have been my help.
Cast me not off; forsake me not,
O God of my salvation!
It may look like the world is crumbling all around us, and it may well be. The Lord never told us to put our trust in the world. We should not be surprised when evil rears its ugly head, or when trouble comes upon us. These are things that have happened and will continue to happen till Jesus returns. It may even get worse.
But when the storm gets worse, when trouble seems to be closing in, and when our worries get the best of us, we always need to remember that we can and should run under the cover of God's almighty love and grace. We keep running back to Jesus and take shelter under his almighty arm.
How do we do this? We do it when we go to God in prayer. He hears us and answers us like a loving father answers his children with love and compassion. We go to God's Word and we read it like we would read the comforting words of our mom when we're sad or distressed. We remind ourselves of all the times God ahs taken care of his people, and then we realize that we are his people. We kneel at the altar where we can literally take Jesus' body and blood into ourselves. We remember our baptisms where we were washed and made God's children! We go to worship where we see, hear, and say all the things that God wants for us in the presence of our brothers and sisters in Christ. There we have opportunity to counsel and be counseled in the fellowship of the believers.
David, knew where his comfort was to be found. While we was out on the battlefield and his enemies were around him on every side he says these words,
"4 One thing have I asked of the Lord,
that will I seek after:
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
all the days of my life,
to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord
and to inquire in his temple."
Be in and with the body of Christ and you will have peace!
Prayer: When the world is closing in all around me, remind me to run to the shelter of your arms and to dwell with you in your temple forever. Amen.
