DEVOTION: Psalm 103:1-12 English Standard Version (ESV)
Bless the Lord, O My Soul
Of David.
103 Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and all that is within me,
bless his holy name!
2 Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and forget not all his benefits,
3 who forgives all your iniquity,
who heals all your diseases,
4 who redeems your life from the pit,
who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy,
5 who satisfies you with good
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's.
6 The Lord works righteousness
and justice for all who are oppressed.
7 He made known his ways to Moses,
his acts to the people of Israel.
8 The Lord is merciful and gracious,
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
9 He will not always chide,
nor will he keep his anger forever.
10 He does not deal with us according to our sins,
nor repay us according to our iniquities.
11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him;
12 as far as the east is from the west,
so far does he remove our transgressions from us.
In a world where everything seems to be falling apart, where trouble seems to be endlessly brewing, and where some are wondering if the end of the world is near, we need to be continuously reminded of the Lord's benefits and blessings. We need to remember that we are not alone, but that God is with us and he will never leave us or forsake us.
As we remember 9/11 as the day where it looked like evil had taken over, we also remember that the Lord Jesus defeated all of that evil on the cross. It may rear its ugly head from time to time, but that head has been crushed and is only wriggling and writhing for a short time longer.
As people come and go out of our lives and even in and out of the church, and we need to remember that God will never go away. He will stay by our side. Although the world forsake us, the Lord never will.
The Psalm above is one of which I have remembered countless times over the years. We can take so much comfort from this passage that it is one that we should memorize and call to mind every time things are looking so good. When your heart rate and blood pressure increases, when you wake up with that uneasy feeling and your mind is spinning with all that you need to do and all the troubles you are going to face in the day, take a step back and repeat this Psalm! Repeat it throughout your day! Let the devil know that he will not gain a foothold in your life, but that the Lord will fill you with his Spirit and the peace that comes with Him. Let the world know that you are a person of peace and forgiveness!
Prayer: Lord, thank you for reminding me that you love me, forgive me, and will always be with me. Amen.
