DEVOTION:  Psalm 121  English Standard Version (ESV)

My Help Comes from the Lord

A Song of Ascents.

121 I lift up my eyes to the hills.
    From where does my help come?
My help comes from the Lord,
    who made heaven and earth.

He will not let your foot be moved;
    he who keeps you will not slumber.
Behold, he who keeps Israel
    will neither slumber nor sleep.

The Lord is your keeper;
    the Lord is your shade on your right hand.
The sun shall not strike you by day,
    nor the moon by night.

The Lord will keep you from all evil;
    he will keep your life.
The Lord will keep
    your going out and your coming in
    from this time forth and forevermore.

I often think about how fragile life really is.  Just this morning I was listening to the news and they were talking about a serious accident, with serious injuries, that shut down the highway at Chesterfield Airport Rd.  I think about that person or those people in the accident and how their lives will be forever changed.  I think about the people stuck in traffic and how their lives will be effected.  Just that one little instance has a ripple effect on so many things.

I also think it is amazing that people can live 90-100-110 years on this earth.  With all of the different things that can happen, with all of the diseases, with all of the accidents to which each of us is prone, it is amazing that things are as good as they are for humans in this world.

It's amazing until you read the Psalm today.  Then, you are reminded of who is watching out for you, who is caring for you, who is keeping the sun in its place so it doesn't burn this whole world up in an instant, who is keeping the earth spinning and rotating so that this world can sustain life, who keeps your heart beating for as long as he wants to and no longer.

Lent is a time to remember that you are dust and that you will return to dust, but that who you are, your soul, your spirit will last forever only because of the mercy and grace of God!  Trust in that mercy and grace today!

Prayer: Lord, help me to realize how fragile I really am so that I can surrender more to you and rest in your grace.  Amen.]
