DEVOTION:

Psalm 112:1-9 English Standard Version (ESV)

The Righteous Will Never Be Moved

112 [a] Praise the Lord!
Blessed is the man who fears the Lord,
    who greatly delights in his commandments!
His offspring will be mighty in the land;
    the generation of the upright will be blessed.
Wealth and riches are in his house,
    and his righteousness endures forever.
Light dawns in the darkness for the upright;
    he is gracious, merciful, and righteous.
It is well with the man who deals generously and lends;
    who conducts his affairs with justice.
For the righteous will never be moved;
    he will be remembered forever.
He is not afraid of bad news;
    his heart is firm, trusting in the Lord.
His heart is steady;[b] he will not be afraid,
    until he looks in triumph on his adversaries.
He has distributed freely; he has given to the poor;
    his righteousness endures forever;
    his horn is exalted in honor.

What are you afraid of?  I can honestly say that I'm not afraid of anything.  There's some things that I wouldn't like if they happened to me.  A car accident, cancer, the death of anyone I love.  These things are things I wouldn't like very much.  They would hurt.  They wouldn't be fun.  But they aren't things that I'm afraid of.  I will do all that I can to avoid them, but I'm not afraid of them.

As Christians we need to understand the difference.  There is nothing to really fear, because God is on our side, and He will put an end to all pain, suffering, and death.  We will endure these things for a time, but they will eventually come to an end and we will be free from them.

In this passage we also see that the man who fears the Lord is generous.  It is ok to be generous, even if those to whom we are generous don't always use the gifts we give in a righteous way, because we know that it is all God's in the first place, and He is the one who commands us to give generously.

So live life generously in love and peace and don't be afraid!  The Lord will take care of all of your needs, especially your need for salvation and eternal life!

Prayer: Lord, thank you for making me free from fear!  Help me to live generously and at peace with everyone so far as it depends on me.  Amen.
