DEVOTION: Daniel 12:1-3 (ESV)

The Time of the End

12 "At that time shall arise Michael, the great prince who has charge of your people. And there shall be a time of trouble, such as never has been since there was a nation till that time. But at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone whose name shall be found written in the book. And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. And those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky above; and those who turn many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever.

Reading this, you may think that we are in the very time of the end, and you'd be right.  It's also good to think that.  It's good to think that you may not be here tomorrow or that the earth itself may not be here tomorrow, or even that there may not be a tomorrow.

It's good to think that, because it helps you to put things in perspective.  There is nothing so serious that it won't be overcome by the Lord.  There is nothing so ominous that it hasn't been defeated and brought to nothing by the power of Christ.  Yes, there will be a time of trouble.  It will be a terrible time like the world has never seen.  And I'm not talking about protests on college campuses, or even government that wants you to pay more taxes.  I'm talking about real trouble.  I'm talking about the persecution of Christians to death.  I'm talking about ISIS beheading Christians in the streets.  I'm talking about you not being allowed to share your faith openly anymore with the punishment being imprisonment and death.  Get it?

In Daniel's time that was happening.  Remember Daniel in the Lion's Den?  Remember the fiery furnace?  They weren't allowed to even acknowledge the Lord God much less pray to him.  Yet, they did!

They weren't afraid to proclaim and confess that there was only one God!  They weren't afraid to defy the king to worship and serve God alone.  They faced death and overcame it!

We will too!  We will face death and overcome it too!  Whether it is a peaceful death in our sleep, a painful death in physical agony, or a death by persecution, we will overcome because Christ has overcome and won the victory!  We will shine like the stars!  We will be as bright as the noonday sun!

As you go through your suffering today, whatever it may be, know that the Lord has won victory over it.  It may hurt for a while.  It may even be unbearable.  Yet, the Holy Spirit will give you the faith, and through that faith, the peace, comfort and joy you need to endure!  Then, after it's all said and done, you will still be standing for all eternity!  Trust and believe in that promise from God Himself today!

Prayer: Lord, even though there is trouble all around us and in us today, help us to continue to stand firm in the faith that you give us.  Amen.
