DEVOTION:  Matthew 11:12-19

12 From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence, and the violent take it by force. 13 For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John, 14 and if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah who is to come. 15 He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

16 "But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to their playmates,

17 "'We played the flute for you, and you did not dance;
    we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.'

18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, 'He has a demon.' 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, 'Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' Yet wisdom is justified by her deeds."

You can't win with some people.  They are going to be against you no matter what you do.  That's how it was with Jesus.  First John the Baptist came and he stayed away from people and from regular life.  he lived out in the wilderness and ate locusts and wild honey.  They didn't like that, because he was too weird, to eccentric.  he didn't fit into their mold.  They thought he has a demon.

Then there was Jesus who took a bunch of fishermen and a tax collector to be his disciples, and who ate and drank with sinners.  He went to weddings.  He had fun.  he didn't particularly fit in with the people's ideas of what a Savior should be like,

Then there's you and me.  If we are good and do the right thing we are considered too holy or out of touch with people.  If we intermingle with regular folks and live a regular sinful life as sinners who are saved by grace, we are considered hypocrites, or we are not "good" enough to be Christians.

L

It's a good thing God isn't like judgmental people.  He knows and judges the heart.  He is omniscient!  He is holy!  He loves us no matter what we look like.  Praise be to God!

Stop judging people according to your own mixed up standards off what a Christian (or even a pastor) should look like.  Instead judge a person according to the heart, which is loved, saved, and made holy by Christ!

Let us pray: Lord, you treat us with love, mercy, and grace.  help us to treat others the way you treat us.  Amen.

OPERATION BACKPACK FOR OCTOBER IS CANNED VEGETABLES!! !
Many children in our community are very poor.  They are able to get some of their meals at school during the week, but often go hungry on weekends.  Operation backpack is a way that our community has decided to help these kids.

Every month throughout the school year, each church participating will take one food item and collect just that food item.  At the end of the month the food will be delivered to school.  The school officials along with volunteers will distribute the food to kids backpacks to take home.
Throughout the month of October we will be collecting canned veggies. All size cans and even individual portions will be accepted.  The fruit will be delivered to the schools November 1.   We will have a box in the narthex for deposits.
