DEVOTION: When one rules over men in righteousness, when he rules in the fear of God, he is like the light of morning at sunrise on a cloudless morning, like the brightness after rain that brings the grass from the earth. 2 Samuel 23:3-4
This was one of, in not the last thing that David said. He was dying and he wanted to impart some wisdom to his son. He had learned through many mistakes and heartache what it was like when he didn't rule in righteousness (Bathsheba). He saw what happened to Saul when Saul no longer feared the Lord and let the power get to his head. He didn't want that to happen to his son Solomon.
This isn't just good advice for a king, but it works in all of your relationships. When a father does his job in righteousness his family thrives. When a spouse loves his or her spouse in God's righteousness the marriage is wonderful. When a pastor leads a congregation in righteousness and when he fears the Lord, there is joy and peace. And when he doesn't....... well you know what happens.
I urge you today to pray for righteousness and the fear of the Lord in your life. Wherever God has placed you, whether you are a son, daughter, mother, father, worker, boss, grandparent, church member, mayor, or even president; walk humbly and love mercy, give grace, give God's love and forgiveness, and things will go well and God will be pleased!
Prayer: Lord God, bless me that I may live my life in righteousness and in the fear of you! Amen.
