DEVOTION: "I lie down and sleep; I wake up again, because the Lord sustains me." Psalm 3:5
Were you surprised when you woke up this morning that you were still breathing, that your heart was still beating, that the sun still rose on yet another day for you? Probably not.
Maybe you were. Maybe you are of such a certain age that you take every day as if it could be your last. When you were younger that was not the case. You woke up as if it was no big deal. You jumped up ready to start the day. Now it takes a bit longer and at least a cup of coffee to get you going. Instead of exclaiming "Good morning Lord!" You are groaning, "Good Lord, morning."
I want to exclaim to you that in either case, whether you are looking forward to the day or dreading it, the Lord will sustain you! He is the one who allows you to lay down to sleep, and as much as you may set an alarm clock, he is the one who allows you to get up for yet another morning.
He sustains your life! Oh, what peace that gives me! It makes me to truly understand that my life is in God's hands. That peace that passes all understanding comes from God. The food, clothes, house, home, wife, children and all that I have to support this body and life comes from God because He loves me and wants me to be alive.
He also sustains my spiritual life. he sustains it with his Word and Sacraments. He sustains it with the spiritual food of the Lord's Supper. He feeds me with his comforting and loving word. He washes me with his water and word in baptism. He gives me a fellowship of believers called St. John's Lutheran church. He alone sustains me, and for that I will be eternally grateful!
I urge you to realize more and more that your whole life hinges on the love of God, especially your eternal life! Live solely in the love of God and in him you will have true and lasting peace!
Prayer: Lord, thank you for sustaining me on this earth, and when your will is for me to leave this earth, thank you for sustaining me eternally in heaven with you. Amen.
