DEVOTION: Acts 2:37-39
37 Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?" 38 And Peter said to them, "Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself."
Peter had been preaching to them about what they had done to Jesus either directly or indirectly. Some of them probably were there and did shout out "crucify him". You can imagine how they would have felt when Peter preaches the law to them and tells them that they are guilty of murder. Other were responsible for Jesus' death indirectly, because their sins were what caused Jesus to go to the cross in the first place.
ONE OF THEM IS YOU! It was your sin and my sin that caused Jesus to have to go to the cross and suffer hell (literally). It is because of your unwillingness to worship him on Sunday that he died on the cross. It is because of your hate and your unwillingness to forgive the person who hurt you. It is because you keep looking at and lusting after other people instead of simply loving and caring for your spouse. It is because of your selfishness. It is because of your laziness. It is because of your pride. It is because of your love of money. Need I go on?
If you aren't cut to the heart and if you aren't brought to your knees in repentance when you hear this message then there is something else wrong with you. WE ALL NEED TO UNDERSTAND THIS! IT IS OUR FAULT THAT JESUS WENT TO THE CROSS! And it is for our salvation that HE was willing to do it, because He loves us.
The message hasn't changed since that instant. When we are cut to the heart because of our sins we often cry out, "what can I do?" The answer is always the same "repent and be baptized". Once you are baptized believe in your baptism! Believe in the forgiveness won for you on the cross and imparted to you at your baptism and every time you hear the good news! Your sins have been washed away. You are forgiven! Rejoice!
Repentance means a turn around, a complete 180. How are you going to turn around from your sin today? Of what do you need to repent? Repent and believe the good news! JESUS PAID THE PRICE FOR ALL YOUR SINS! Stop living in them and rejoice in Christ!
Prayer: Lord God, thank you for taking the penalty of eternal death and judgment that I deserve. Cause me to repent and amend my sinful life so that I may live securely and peacefully in your forgiveness. Amen.
