DEVOTION: Jesus answered, "It is written: Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God." Matthew 4:4
have you ever wondered why you are still alive? I imagine that if you are a younger person, it is probably not something that you think about too much. Many older folks, even people my age wonder about it a little more. As we see our peers and those of our same age dying around us and as we think about all of the diseases and other things that plague us, we wonder how we are still alive.
The truth is that all of us are only alive by the grace of God. It is only because God wills it that we are alive. Yes, we have a bit of a hand in it. We eat right, we exercise, we don't run out into oncoming traffic, still, if God wills He can take you out of this earth at the speaking of His Word.
When Jesus said what he did in the reading for today, he was talking directly to Satan who was doing all that he could to tempt Jesus. Satan tried to get him to turn rocks into bread. It seems a silly temptation until you remember that Jesus hadn't eaten for forty days. Think of how hungry you get after just a day. Jesus was literally near death because of starvation.
Yet, in His wisdom and sinlessness, Jesus knew that if he gave in to Satan all would be lost. He wouldn't do it, because he truly knew that man only lives by the will of God.
Realize your total dependence on God today for even your very breath!
Let us pray: Lord God, we are totally dependent on Your will. Thank you for having the will to love us and save us by Your grace. Amen.

MONDAY'S QUIZ: How many Magi (wise men) came to see Jesus? It was trick question. There is no mention of a number. We usually think there were three of them because there were three gifts.
