"More Than a Hero"
August 15, 2013
God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8
The Pontiac Bonneville was stalled on the railroad tracks in Ames, Iowa.
The Pontiac Bonneville with the handicapped license plates was stalled on the railroad tracks in Ames, Iowa.
The Pontiac Bonneville with the handicapped license plates with two old people inside was stalled on the railroad tracks in Ames, Iowa... and a train was coming.
What would you do?
Some people called to the couple to 'Get out before it's too late!" Chris Ihle, father of three, went beyond that. He ran to the tracks and tried to push the Pontiac off. That didn't work. He scampered to the other side of the car, braced his cowboy boots onto the track and pushed again.
The car moved.
Ihle kept pushing and the car kept moving. Eventually, he thought the car was clear of the locomotive, and he jumped back. The train missed the car and Ihle by inches.
By inches.
Now there are a lot of ways I wouldn't mind leaving this world, but I am not ready to go like a bug that has been splattered on a locomotive's windshield. Still, Ihle ran that risk and two people are alive because he did.
God bless him for that kind of courage.
Now I suppose I really don't have to finish this devotion. I don't have to tell you we have been saved because God's Son came into this world and gave His all so that we might be spared from sin, the devil, and the destructive locomotive of death.
Nor do I have to tell you that Jesus, unlike Ihle who escaped with his life, knew He was going to have to die if we were going to live. Nor do I have to go into any detail concerning how -- because of Jesus' sacrifice and resurrection -- hundreds of millions of people will escape damnation and live forever in heaven.
No, I won't tell you all those things. But I will say this: while the actions of Chris Ihle said he is a hero, what Jesus has done says He is our Savior.
THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, I give thanks for those special people who are willing to make a commitment to help complete strangers. May I be more than thankful for my Savior who died so I might live forever. In Jesus' Name I give thanks. Amen.
In Christ I remain His servant and yours,
Pastor Ken Klaus
