DEVOTION: Naaman said, "12 Are not Abana[a] and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? Could I not wash in them and be clean?" So he turned and went away in a rage. 13 But his servants came near and said to him, "My father, it is a great word the prophet has spoken to you; will you not do it? Has he actually said to you, 'Wash, and be clean'?" 14 So he went down and dipped himself seven times in the Jordan, according to the word of the man of God, and his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean.
Too often we think that we need to d some great and terrific thing in order to make our situation better. We think that it all depends on us and how well we can take care of things. We figure out a big plan and do all sorts of convoluted, crazy things to put it into place.
Then and only then, after we have put our plan into place with no exceptions and no changes, do we ask God for help. And even then, we only want him to do it our way. We don't want Him to take care of things, we just want Him to do what we want.
In the reading for today, Naaman wanted healing from his leprosy, but only on his terms. He thought it silly that the prophet would tell him to wash in the dirty Jordan river when there were much nicer cleaner rivers closer to where he lived. So, instead of listening to the Lord and doing what He said, he walked away from a perfect chance to be healed.
Naaman had to be humbled. he had to know who was truly in charge of his healing so that not only his skin would be healed but his heart as well. We need that same healing every day. We need to be humbled so that we don't walk away from the perfect soul healing that God provides for us. If we're not humbled we too often walk away and get further and further away from the Lord.
Look at your life today and all of the places in it where you haven't let God be Lord of our life, where you have said, "I'll do it my way." The humble yourself before the Lord and He will lift you up and give you peace!
Let us pray: Lord God, help me not to be like Naaman, but help me to see that your yoke is easy and your burden is light and that I will find true rest for my soul only in You. Amen.
