DEVOTION: And he built altars for all the host of heaven in the two courts of the house of the Lord. And he burned his sons as an offering in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, and used fortune-telling and omens and sorcery, and dealt with mediums and with necromancers. He did much evil in the sight of the Lord, provoking Him to anger. 2 Chronicles 33:5-6 PLEASE NOTE: THIS DEVOTION IS NOT FOR CHILDREN. PARENTS, PLEASE BE ADVISED THIS DEVOTION CONTAINS SOME FRIGHTENING CONTENT. Much appreciation to Mr. Ian Adnams for calling the subject to my attention. There are times when the world loves to think the devil is a myth, and our generation has no need of God or a Savior. If you or someone you know has ever entertained such a thought, then a recent undercover story by the BBC will dispel that myth. The story began, "We can bury the child alive on your construction site." The rest of the report spoke of how the villages and farming communities around Uganda's capital, Kampala, are living in terror. It seems children are disappearing and when they're found -- if they're found -- they have been murdered in terrible ways. The investigation uncovered witchdoctors who will for a fee produce a charm, which promises wealth to those who have paid the price. On tape the BBC shows one witchdoctor describing how the most powerful charm is made with the sacrifice of a human child. That the witchdoctors would do such a thing is disturbing. What is even more frightening is that some of the richest folk in Uganda apparently believe these enchantments work and are making use of the shaman's services. It is a scene reminiscent of the report of 2nd Chronicles where children were sacrificed to false gods. My friends, it is a frightening thing when the devil feels he can work with such impunity. This is why I would encourage you to remember the country of Uganda, its communities, these parents and these children in your prayers. While we may not be able to do anything personally to change the situation, we can surround these people with our petitions to our God of grace. The Lord Jesus Christ who gave His life for these little ones, who would gladly take them up in His arms and bless them, can conquer the forces of evil. He has done it before and He can do it again in Uganda. And, as long as we're praying for the children of Uganda, let's say a prayer for our own children. While our country doesn't have many witchdoctors murdering children for a price, we have enough sick individuals who try to do it for free. THE PRAYER: Dear Lord Jesus, how sad, how tragic this sinful world can be. Many would like to believe humanity is sophisticated and civilized. We are not. We are sinners who need a Savior. That You are my Savior is a joy inexpressible. Now, as one of Your redeemed, I ask that You will send Your angels to watch over the children of Uganda, as well as those of our own homes. Overcome, overpower, overwhelm Satan and his servants. Let their work be brought to no effect and any who would use their services be shown there is a greater power than that of evil and darkness. This, dear Savior, I pray in Your Name. Amen. |
