DEVOTION: There is a time for everything and a season for every activity under heaven...... Ecclesiastes 3:1-17

This is a very familiar verse and passage of Scripture.  Have you ever thought about what it means for you?  It means that there is a time for many good things to happen and a time for quite a few bad things to happen as well.  The good news is that God works His will through them both.

There is a time for strife and a time for healing, a time to live in plenty and a time to be in need.  A time to help and a time to be helped.  A time to talk and a time to keep your mouth shut.  I could go on and on.  How do you see God's hand in all of these times and circumstances?

This time in our church's history is a time of reflection and restoration, a time to look back at where we have been and a time to think about, plan, and prepare for where we want to go.  All of this is guided by God's hand.  "God works all things out for the good of those who love Him and have been called according to His purpose."

We need to be looking toward God and His purpose in the things taking place this week and in the weeks ahead.  He will have His will to be done in and through us!  How exciting is that?  He has big things planned for us!

In this time we don't stop doing God's work.  In fact, He may even ramp it up a bit in our lives.  This week and next we have many things going on.  Below is a list of the main things:

1. OAFC:  If you don't know what it is by now, you need to learn about it.  Go to OAFC.org to learn more about it.    A brief synopsis is that it is a group of high school age kids and their adult leaders who go to a different LCMS church once a month and do Bible study, evangelism and outreach in, for, and with the congregation.  The big parts are Bible study Friday night, Saturday morning, and Saturday night, door todoor canvassing Sat morning and afternoon, a program at a local nursing or retirement home, and leading of worship Sat and Sun.  Many have volunteered to house and feed these wonderful folks  this weekend.  What we really want now is people, both teens and adults, who will take some time out to participate in their activities.  Please call me and let me know if you can be there.

2. LUAU:  The Schirrs have opened their beautiful home to us Saturday night to have a good time of relaxation, fellowship, and good fun.  Thank you Schirrs!  Please call them TODAY if you haven't signed up yet!  This is an adults only party so kids need to stay home.

3. A NEW BIBLE STUDY ON PROVERBS:  It has been a while since we have started a new Bible study.  If you haven't been to Bible study for a while or have never attended, this Sunday is a perfect time to start.  Proverbs is full of God's wisdom!  If you want to know how to live your life in a more God pleasing way, this is the Bible study to be at!

4. JOPLIN RELIEF:  Hopefully by next week I will have a plan to take a group of folks down to Joplin to help with the relief efforts for a few days.  Please stay tuned, especially if you want to go.

Prayer:  Lord God, as we reflect and move forward, herlp us also to continue to do your work in every part of our lives!  Help us to realize that there is a time for everything under heaven, but that your work is always going on!  Amen.

St. John's Group Email FW: How to unfold a rosebud?

I found this piece of wisdom wonderful and a good lesson to learn!  One that I had never heard before.  Thank you Don!

GOD'S Rosebud

A new minister was walking with an older, more seasoned minister in the garden one day.

Feeling a bit insecure about what God had for him to do, he was asking the older preacher for some advice.

The older preacher walked up to a rosebush and handed the young preacher a rosebud and told him to open it without tearing off any petals.

The young preacher looked in disbelief at the older preacher and was trying to figure out what a rosebud could possibly have to do with his wanting to know the will of God for his life and ministry.

But because of his great respect for the older preacher, he proceeded to try to unfold the rose, while keeping every petal intact.

It wasn't long before he realized how impossible this was to do.

Noticing the younger preacher's inability to unfold the rosebud without tearing it, the older preacher began to recite the following poem...

"It is only a tiny rosebud,
A flower of God's design;
But I cannot unfold the petals
With these clumsy hands of mine."

"The secret of unfolding flowers
Is not known to such as I.
GOD opens this flower so easily,
But in my hands they die."

"If I cannot unfold a rosebud,
This flower of God's design,
Then how can I have the wisdom
To unfold this life of mine?"

"So I'll trust in God for leading
Each moment of my day.
I will look to God for guidance
In each step of the way."

"The path that lies before me,
Only my Lord knows.
I'll trust God to unfold the moments,
Just as He unfolds the rose."

Please share this poem with a friend if you enjoyed being reminded to let go and let God unfold your life.

Pastor and Mrs. Schamber (Naomi Johnson's mom and dad) came and took all of the stuff that was donated this week.  We will continue to collect for next Friday as well.

Peace be with you all on your blessed Memorial Day weekend!!

Your Friday funny!

SISTER MARY ANN'S GASOLINE

SISTER MARY ANN'S GASOLINE
Sister Mary Ann, who worked for a home health agency, was out making her rounds visiting homebound patients when she ran out of gas. As luck would have it, a Texaco Gasoline station was just a block away.

She walked to the station to borrow a gas can and buy some gas. The attendant told her that the only gas can he owned had been loaned out, but she could wait until it was returned. Since Sister Mary Ann was on the way to see a patient, she decided not to wait and walked back to her car.

She looked for something in her car that she could fill with gas and spotted the bedpan she was taking to the patient. Always resourceful, Sister Mary Ann carried the bedpan to the station,
filled it with gasoline, and carried the full bedpan back to her car.

As she was pouring the gas into her tank, two Baptists watched from across the street.. One of them turned to the other and said,

'If it starts, I'm turning Catholic.'!!

St. John's Group Email Update on efforts in Joplin, how you can help, and things NOT to do

I have just received this email from President Ray Mirly regarding efforts in Joplin, specifically Immanuel Lutheran Church and Martin Luther School.  Please note that the email says that we should not collect or attempt to take clothing to Joplin.

We are still collecting things to bring down there and Pastor Ken Shamber and his wife, Naomi Johnson's mom and dad,  are hopefully going ot be able to bring it down on Friday.

 RE:                    Joplin Tornado

Psalm 46:10-11 (ESV)

"Be still, and know that I am God.

I will be exalted among the nations,

I will be exalted in the earth!"

The Lord of hosts is with us;

The God of Jacob is our fortress.

Rev. Gene Wyssmann and I were in Joplin yesterday to meet with Rev. Greg Mech, Jeremy Schamber, Principal of Martin Lutheran School, Jason Glaskey (DCE) and several lay leaders of Immanuel Lutheran Church. They want to thank all who have responded with prayers, assistance, and words of encouragement. The challenges that they face are beyond words, but their faith in Almighty God is very evident.

Communication by phone and other technology is at best intermittent. This has made the task of accounting for the whereabouts and well-being of Immanuel members very difficult. Pastor Mech, Immanuel's staff and various lay leaders have made every effort to personally contact every member within the path of the tornado. They believe that they have accounted for every member that lived within the path of the storm. They are not aware of the death of any of their members even though many of their homes were totally destroyed. They have not been able to contact all of the school families.

Fourteen members' homes or apartments were totally destroyed. Countless others sustained significant damage. The parsonage has major roof damage. The school building suffered roof damage, but temporary repairs have already been made. The church has no apparent damage, but is without electricity.

DCE Glaskey shared that the teenagers of the congregation, especially those that lost their homes, are experiencing significant emotional difficulties. Several have requested that he go with them and their family to the site of where their homes once stood to help them begin to deal with their loss.

Rev. William Doubek, pastor of First Lutheran Church, Neosho, has several members that sustained complete loss of their homes in Joplin. An eight year old girl and six year old boy from one of his families were killed by the tornado. The mother of these children is injured and hospitalized, as is her two year old child. Our prayers go out to this family.

As we were leaving the church, Red Cross staff was arriving to establish a command center at Immanuel. The challenge is that the church does not have large enough refrigerators and freezers to neither store food, nor proper space for other donations that are starting to arrive.

Rev. Glenn Merritt and Rev. Carlos Hernandez with Lutheran World Relief and Human Care will visit Joplin today. Mr. Jim Eckrich and a number of other associates from Lutheran Disaster Relief will also be in Joplin today. Both organizations are giving the following advice:

  • Keep everyone in your prayers.
  • Send financial contributions to the organization of your choice. See addresses below.
  • Do not drive to Joplin to assist unless you are a qualified first responder. You will not be permitted into the area of the storm damage. Once search and recovery efforts have been completed, clean-up volunteers will be requested.
  • Volunteers are being coordinated through United Way 211. Groups can register by calling 211 (landline) or (800) 427- 4626 (cell). Registration can also be done online at http://www.211missouri.org/.
  • Do not collect nor attempt to take clothing to Joplin.
  • The water utility hopes to have safe drinking water flowing through its system today. Bottled water is still needed.
  • Phone calls should not be placed to Immanuel Lutheran Church until further notice.
  • Volunteers of the congregation are attempting to keep the website updated. Please go to www.immanueljoplin.com

I have requested Rev. Mech to send me a daily list of needs. Please check the Missouri District website for daily updates. One immediate need is the loan of John Deere Gators (or equivalent) to be used to move supplies through the disaster zone. The authorities will not permit delivery by car or truck. If you or a member of your congregation is willing to loan a Gator type vehicle, contact Karen Siegel, 314.317.4565. She will assist you with necessary delivery information.
