THE NATIVITY OF ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST

June 24, 2018

________________________________________________________________________________

AS WE GATHER

Did you notice that today is a birthday? Very few birthdays are remembered on our Church calendar—only two, in fact. Jesus', of course, for that is what Christmas is about, and John's, who prepared His way. Every other saint is commemorated on the death day.

John, the name given by the angel, means "God is gracious." John fulfilled the meaning of this name by heralding the arrival of the long-promised Messiah. It was not merely a father's pride that gave a song to Zechariah, John's father. This miracle birth was the signal for a greater miracle—the fulfillment of a promise that went back to Adam and Eve in Eden. Though we call him John the Baptist, perhaps the term "John the Forerunner" best describes him. John was born into a priestly family; his birth was marked by the angel for his special role. In the visit of the Virgin Mary to Elizabeth, John kicked in the womb, leaping for joy. As Jesus prepared to begin His public ministry, John began to preach repentance, to baptize, and to fulfill Isaiah's prophecy.

Pastor:                  In the name of the Father and of the X Son and of the Holy Spirit.

People: Amen.

People: for He has visited and redeemed His people.

Pastor:                  He had given the knowledge of salvation to His people

People: in the forgiveness of their sins.

Grant us Your grace so that we are prepared to hear Your Word and receive Your Holy Sacrament to amend our sinful lives, love You above all things, and love our neighbor as ourselves. Amen.

Pastor:  Almighty God, our heavenly Father, has had mercy upon You and has sent His only Son, who suffered for us to forgive us all our sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the X Son and of the Holy Spirit.

People: Amen.

Pastor:  May He who began this good work within you bring it to completion on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. Peace be with you.

People: And also with you.

(Please greet one another with the peace of the Lord)

So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:

Psalm 124 English Standard Version (ESV)

124 If it had not been the Lord who was on our side—
    let Israel now say—
if it had not been the Lord who was on our side
    when people rose up against us,
then they would have swallowed us up alive,
    when their anger was kindled against us;
then the flood would have swept us away,
    the torrent would have gone over us;
then over us would have gone
    the raging waters.

Blessed be the Lord,
    who has not given us
    as prey to their teeth!
We have escaped like a bird
    from the snare of the fowlers;
the snare is broken,
    and we have escaped!

Our help is in the name of the Lord,
    who made heaven and earth.

FW: update on a prayer request

Hi Pastor,

I just wanted to update all who have been praying for Mark's Godfather Steve.

His surgery went well and he is starting to recover nicely if…in his wife's words "would just learn he needs slow down so he can recover".

They removed another suspicious nodule last week and today the results are that it is benign.

Thank God and thank you to everyone who has prayed for this wonderful man!

Mark 4:26-34 English Standard Version (ESV)

The Parable of the Seed Growing

26 And he said, "The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground. 27 He sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows; he knows not how. 28 The earth produces by itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. 29 But when the grain is ripe, at once he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come."

The Parable of the Mustard Seed

30 And he said, "With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable shall we use for it? 31 It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when sown on the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth, 32 yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes larger than all the garden plants and puts out large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade."

33 With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it. 34 He did not speak to them without a parable, but privately to his own disciples he explained everything.

PASTOR AND ALAN HOFELDT WERE AT THE MISSOURI DISTRICT CONVENTION THIS PAST SUNDAY THROUGH TUESDAY…   WHAT IS THE MISSOURI DISTRICT OF THE LCMS AND WHAT WERE THE RESULTS OF THE CONVENTION?

The Missouri District is all of the 268 Lutheran Church Missouri Synod congregation located in Missouri.  We have our own system of governance and our own structure of ministry together.

Every three years a lay delegate and a pastor from each congregation meet in convention in Columbia to elect our president and officers for the next three years and to decide other important business.  Below are the results that pertain specifically to you as members of St. John's:

  1. President Lee Hagan was re-elected to his second term.
  2. I (pastor) was elected as the "circuit visitor" for eight congregations (Christ, Augusta; Holy Cross, OFallon; Immanuel, Wentzville, St. Paul, New Melle; Trinity, Troy; Trinity, Wellsville, Grace, Wellsville; and St. Paul, Jonesburg).  (This basically means I will be helping out congregation when challenges arise or when they need a new pastor).
  3. A restructuring was approved that is very similar to the restructuring we are doing at St. John's.  They eliminated four boards and created one new board of directors and a council on mission and ministry.

Please say a prayer of thanks for all of those who serve at the district level and pray as they continue to assist congregations in making disciples.
