DEVOTION:  1 Corinthians 8  English Standard Version (ESV)

Food Offered to Idols

Now concerning[a] food offered to idols: we know that "all of us possess knowledge." This "knowledge" puffs up, but love builds up. If anyone imagines that he knows something, he does not yet know as he ought to know. But if anyone loves God, he is known by God.[b]

Therefore, as to the eating of food offered to idols, we know that "an idol has no real existence," and that "there is no God but one." For although there may be so-called gods in heaven or on earth—as indeed there are many "gods" and many "lords"— yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist.

However, not all possess this knowledge. But some, through former association with idols, eat food as really offered to an idol, and their conscience, being weak, is defiled. Food will not commend us to God. We are no worse off if we do not eat, and no better off if we do. But take care that this right of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. 10 For if anyone sees you who have knowledge eating[c] in an idol's temple, will he not be encouraged, if his conscience is weak, to eat food offered to idols? 11 And so by your knowledge this weak person is destroyed, the brother for whom Christ died. 12 Thus, sinning against your brothers[e] and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ. 13 Therefore, if food makes my brother stumble, I will never eat meat, lest I make my brother stumble.

I have always had a bit of a problem with this passage, especially as an American.  I have the right to do what I want, don't I?  If I want to eat meat sacrificed to idols that's my business, isn't it?  I mean, I know that an idol isn't a real thing, and that meat tastes really good, so I'm going to eat it if I want to eat it.  You can't tell me what to do.

            The trouble is that sometimes, and I've been guilty of it, we do things that we know aren't against God's will, but others think they are, and so if we rub it in their faces, so to speak, we are hurting them and their consciences.  We are causing them to judge us and are also causing them to stumble and sin.  So if we are in the company of a person who is against drinking alcohol for whatever reason, we should politely refrain from drinking alcohol in front of him.  I have been guilty of this a time or two without even really thinking about it and have felt awful about it afterwards.

            It's really all about keeping stumbling blocks away from the path to Jesus.  It's about the Gospel and grace.  It's about loving people enough to say that we will sacrifice our comfort or our rights to help another person get faith and keep faith. Don't be a stumbling block.  Don't make your rights and privileges as a Christian more important than the faith of another.  Do everything you do and live the way you live for the sake of the Gospel and you will do well!

Prayer: Lord, thank you for giving me the gift of the Gospel. Help me to love you and others enough to refrain from doing things that will hurt my confession and witness.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ:  Who was Zipporah?

(From Pat King)  Well, since I haven't been answering in a long time, I decided to do so today. Because I know you've missed me.

So, this is a little known fact – which I, of course know! – but Zippy was the inventor of zip-lock bags. No lie!

But before she was inventing food-storage solutions, she took time to marry Moses. Number 12 refers to her as a Cushite woman who Aaron and Miriam disliked, because of her ancestry. Cushites were supposedly descendants of Kush – Ham's descendants – and identified with nations of Africa (Egypt, Ethiopia, Libya, etc). The word "Kushim" was used to describe dark-skinned people.

She is also talked about in Exodus 4 – 24-27, where she circumcised her son, when God came to kill Moses - Harks back to the covenant made with Abraham – and saved the day.

And that's a fact!

Don Nolte also answered: "She was Moses' wife."

DEVOTION:  Deuteronomy 18:15-20  English Standard Version (ESV)

A New Prophet like Moses

15 "The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your brothers—it is to him you shall listen— 16 just as you desired of the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly, when you said, 'Let me not hear again the voice of the Lord my God or see this great fire any more, lest I die.' 17 And the Lord said to me, 'They are right in what they have spoken. 18 I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. And I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him. 19 And whoever will not listen to my words that he shall speak in my name, I myself will require it of him. 20 But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in my name that I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods, that same prophet shall die.'

Every time I read a passage like this, I am overwhelmed at the magnitude and just sheer awesomeness and finality of the Lord's power, strength, and might.  His power was so great and so magnificent that the people couldn't handle it.  They said to Moses, "Let me not hear again the voice of the Lord my God or see this great fire anymore, lest I die."  Can you imagine a power like that so great that if you partake of it you'll die?  It is unfathomable and cannot be understood.

            I've heard people say things like, "Why doesn't God just come down and speak plainly to us?  Why does he have to be so mysterious and veiled in these things like Word and Sacraments?  Or "Why doesn't God just show himself to us if he is real?"  Here you have your answer.  You wouldn't be able to handle it.  You'd straight out die of fear from a heart attack.

            At the same time, this is exactly what will happen on judgment day.  Every eye will see him.  Every ear will hear him.  He will come on the clouds with great glory and might and will judge all the people.  He will lay bare the earth and bring it to nothing.  Then he will restore it to what he had planned for it from the beginning before the fall. Then we will see him face to face and not be afraid.  We will live in perfect peace and joy forever free from sin and everything that goes with it.

            Rejoice today that God will reveal himself to you fully once again at the last day.  Until then, thank the Lord that he doesn't speak to you or show his face to you while you are still in your sins.  You couldn't handle it.  Thank the Lord for his unending patience and mercy on this sin sick world. Look forward to the world to come!

Lord, thank you for having mercy on me and not showing me your glory in my sinfulness.  Remove my sinfulness from me on that last day so I may see you face to face and live.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ:

What were the king of Egypt's first and second plans? to deal with the every increasing strength and number of Israelites in his land (Let's see if someone can beat Don Nolte in answering this question first!!)

First he decided that they should all be forced into slave labor with ruthless task masters over them.  Then, when that didn't work and they continued to get stronger, he decided that every Hebrew baby boy should be killed.

Thanks Don!

Libby Pailer has gone to be with Jesus

Please keep Libby's family and friends in your prayers as Libby has gone from death to eternal life this evening.

Update on Libby Pailer

Libby is not doing well. She has several blood clots that are obstructing blood flow which has caused sepsis. She is not a candidate for surgery as they are certain she wouldn't make it through the surgery. The medicine that they used to tried to dissolve the blood clots didn't work.  She has decided to stop all further extraordinary measures and to go on hospice care.

Please pray for all her family and friends as they care for her and each other.

In her own words "I'm ready to go meet Jesus."

Prayer request for Libby Pailer

Please pray for Libby Pailer as she had a possible stroke on Friday and was put in the ICU last night.

DEVOTION:  Psalm 111  English Standard Version (ESV)

Great Are the Lord's Works

111 [a] Praise the Lord!
I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart,
    in the company of the upright, in the congregation.
Great are the works of the Lord,
    studied by all who delight in them.
Full of splendor and majesty is his work,
    and his righteousness endures forever.
He has caused his wondrous works to be remembered;
    the Lord is gracious and merciful.
He provides food for those who fear him;
    he remembers his covenant forever.
He has shown his people the power of his works,
    in giving them the inheritance of the nations.
The works of his hands are faithful and just;
    all his precepts are trustworthy;
they are established forever and ever,
    to be performed with faithfulness and uprightness.
He sent redemption to his people;
    he has commanded his covenant forever.
    Holy and awesome is his name!
10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;
    all those who practice it have a good understanding.
    His praise endures forever!

Did you know that vinyl records are making a comeback.  Yup, old record stores are a thing now.  One thing about records though is that if they get a bad scratch in them, they will skip and they will keep playing the same sound over and over again.

        Sometimes as a pastor, I feel like I am a broken record, I keep saying the same things over and over again.  Get back to church, come to Bible study, get your kids to Sunday school, we need more volunteers, and on and on and on it goes.  Yet, these things are what I was called to do and to say and so I will keep on saying them until I don't need to anymore, when Jesus returns.

        Another sound that you will hear over and over again until Jesus returns, and for eternity is his praise.  "His praise endures forever!"  Thank the Lord that we will always have that "broken record" in our ears.  We will always hear God's praises from our own mouth and from the mouths of others.  Even in the bleakest days, when the government is shut down, and the Vikings lose another NFC championship game, and the world seems lost, His praise endures forever.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for being my God, may your praise endure on my lips forever.  Amen.
