DEVOTION: Psalm 111 English Standard Version (ESV)
Great Are the Lord's Works
111 [a] Praise the Lord!
I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart,
in the company of the upright, in the congregation.
2 Great are the works of the Lord,
studied by all who delight in them.
3 Full of splendor and majesty is his work,
and his righteousness endures forever.
4 He has caused his wondrous works to be remembered;
the Lord is gracious and merciful.
5 He provides food for those who fear him;
he remembers his covenant forever.
6 He has shown his people the power of his works,
in giving them the inheritance of the nations.
7 The works of his hands are faithful and just;
all his precepts are trustworthy;
8 they are established forever and ever,
to be performed with faithfulness and uprightness.
9 He sent redemption to his people;
he has commanded his covenant forever.
Holy and awesome is his name!
10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;
all those who practice it have a good understanding.
His praise endures forever!
Did you know that vinyl records are making a comeback. Yup, old record stores are a thing now. One thing about records though is that if they get a bad scratch in them, they will skip and they will keep playing the same sound over and over again.
Sometimes as a pastor, I feel like I am a broken record, I keep saying the same things over and over again. Get back to church, come to Bible study, get your kids to Sunday school, we need more volunteers, and on and on and on it goes. Yet, these things are what I was called to do and to say and so I will keep on saying them until I don't need to anymore, when Jesus returns.
Another sound that you will hear over and over again until Jesus returns, and for eternity is his praise. "His praise endures forever!" Thank the Lord that we will always have that "broken record" in our ears. We will always hear God's praises from our own mouth and from the mouths of others. Even in the bleakest days, when the government is shut down, and the Vikings lose another NFC championship game, and the world seems lost, His praise endures forever.
Prayer: Lord, thank you for being my God, may your praise endure on my lips forever. Amen.

DEVOTION: Mark 1:14-20 English Standard Version (ESV)
14 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, 15 and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand;[a] repent and believe in the gospel."
16 Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen.17 And Jesus said to them, "Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men."[b] 18 And immediately they left their nets and followed him. 19 And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets. 20 And immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants and followed him.
Some of you may remember an old commercial on TV that ended with "when EF Hutton talks, people listen". E.F. Hutton was a Wall street heavyweight 40 years ago. I'm not even sure they're around anymore. Probably not. Yet, back in those days they were the firm you would talk to about investing and money management. They had the corner on the goods. They were "it". If they would tell you to invest in a certain stock, you better do it.
Jesus is way better than E.F. Hutton, one, because he's got the real truth. E.F. Hutton isn't around anymore. Jesus is. If you want the real truth about certainty in life and peace in it, don't worry about who's got your money, worry about who's got your soul.
Jesus says "Repent and believe the good news". Do you? Well, DO YOU? Trust in Jesus, and when He talks LISTEN TO HIM!
Prayer: Lord, thank you for giving me ears to listen to your Word. Help me to listen when you call me and do what you say. Amen.

DEVOTION: 1 Corinthians 7:29-35English Standard Version (ESV)
29 This is what I mean, brothers: the appointed time has grown very short. From now on, let those who have wives live as though they had none, 30 and those who mourn as though they were not mourning, and those who rejoice as though they were not rejoicing, and those who buy as though they had no goods, 31 and those who deal with the world as though they had no dealings with it. For the present form of this world is passing away.
32 I want you to be free from anxieties. The unmarried man is anxious about the things of the Lord, how to please the Lord. 33 But the married man is anxious about worldly things, how to please his wife,34 and his interests are divided. And the unmarried or betrothed woman is anxious about the things of the Lord, how to be holy in body and spirit. But the married woman is anxious about worldly things, how to please her husband. 35 I say this for your own benefit, not to lay any restraint upon you, but to promote good order and to secure your undivided devotion to the Lord.
Undivided devotion to the Lord, isn't that what we are all after? We live in a very difficult world. Our interests, allegiances, and time are pulled in so many different directions. Kids are taught that to be successful (whatever successful means), you have to be the best at whatever it is you do. We can see this in youth sports. Sports is no longer done simply for enjoyment. It's used as a way to get ahead. We can't just play a game anymore, we have to "excel" at it. School is no longer just a place to learn, but a place to catapult you into your future endeavors. If you don't get straight As and get that scholarship, then your life is worthless.
In the middle of all this we've lost sight of what's important, our relationship with Almighty God. People are pulled everywhere earthly while their spirits, their souls, are drying up from lack of attention and nurture. While they have to have all everything that the world has to offer, they're fine with "still having faith" or "just believing" in Jesus. They want to excel in everything else but their eternal relationship with Almighty God. All the time they should have this mantra "Nothing matters but Jesus and Jesus makes all the difference."
Now I'm not saying shoot for mediocrity. I'm not saying that you shouldn't try. What I am saying is that you need to get your priorities straight. Your relationship with God should direct everything else you do in life, not the other way around. And what I see in too many lives is that it is the other way around. It is the tail wagging the dog. We are majoring in minors.
It's time to repent! In one sense Paul is saying that it is better not to be married, if that marriage is going to divide your time and energy. On the other hand he is saying that it is good to get married, because that can enhance your relationship with God. Your marriage should not put you in a bind. It shouldn't take you away from your relationship with the Lord, but should always bring you back to the Lord! Let your relationship with the Lord guide and direct your marriage.
I encourage you to think about everything you do and the amount of money and time you spend on things. What is getting in the way of your relationship with Jesus? What is enhancing it? Then change what needs to be changed. I'm not saying quit your job, or make your kids quit the team, but realize that the only be all and end all of your life is your relationship with Jesus and how that relationship affects and directs everything else you do!
Prayer: Lord, thank you for being my everything. Direct my life and all that I do so that it may please you and I may grow in your strength. Amen.
