DEVOTION:  1 Samuel 3:1-20  English Standard Version (ESV)

The Lord Calls Samuel

Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the Lord in the presence of Eli. And the word of the Lord was rare in those days; there was no frequent vision.

At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he could not see, was lying down in his own place. The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was.

Then the Lord called Samuel, and he said, "Here I am!" and ran to Eli and said, "Here I am, for you called me." But he said, "I did not call; lie down again." So he went and lay down.

And the Lord called again, "Samuel!" and Samuel arose and went to Eli and said, "Here I am, for you called me." But he said, "I did not call, my son; lie down again." Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, and the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him.

And the Lord called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli and said, "Here I am, for you called me." Then Eli perceived that the Lord was calling the boy. Therefore Eli said to Samuel, "Go, lie down, and if he calls you, you shall say, 'Speak, Lord, for your servant hears.'" So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

10 And the Lord came and stood, calling as at other times, "Samuel! Samuel!" And Samuel said, "Speak, for your servant hears." 11 Then the Lord said to Samuel, "Behold, I am about to do a thing in Israel at which the two ears of everyone who hears it will tingle. 12 On that day I will fulfill against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house, from beginning to end. 13 And I declare to him that I am about to punish his house forever, for the iniquity that he knew, because his sons were blaspheming God,[a] and he did not restrain them.14 Therefore I swear to the house of Eli that the iniquity of Eli's house shall not be atoned for by sacrifice or offering forever."

15 Samuel lay until morning; then he opened the doors of the house of the Lord. And Samuel was afraid to tell the vision to Eli. 16 But Eli called Samuel and said, "Samuel, my son." And he said, "Here I am."17 And Eli said, "What was it that he told you? Do not hide it from me. May God do so to you and more also if you hide anything from me of all that he told you." 18 So Samuel told him everything and hid nothing from him. And he said, "It is the Lord. Let him do what seems good to him."

19 And Samuel grew, and the Lord was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground. 20 And all Israel from Dan to Beersheba knew that Samuel was established as a prophet of the Lord.

Sometimes you have to tell the truth even if the truth is going to hurt.  Samuel had to tell the man who was raising him that his sons were going to be killed because of what they had been doing by unlawfully taking the meat from the Lord's sacrifices.  Eli, their father, rebuked them for it, but they wouldn't listen to him, and so all three of them perished for their sins.  In the end, all three of them died on the same day.

As a pastor, I often have to call people out on their sins.  It's no fun.  I hate to do it.  The worst part is that when I do, I usually don't get the same reaction that Eli gave to Samuel. It's usually more the way that Eli's sons treated him.  They didn't listen.

Here's the deal folks.  It is always a good thing to tell the truth, but it must be told in love.  If it is told in love, then the conscience is clear.  Samuel simply told the truth and his conscience was clear. He continued to grow into one of the greatest prophets of God ever, so much so, that we still read about him and read his words today some 3,000 years later.

I encourage you to tell the truth and to live by the truth.  If someone is sinning, whether it be against you or simply against God, go and show him his fault just between the two of you.  If he/she listens you have won your brother/sister over.  And that's really what you want, isn't it?  You want to restore the relationship?  You have want to have a clear conscience.  You want to tell the truth.  You want to do what God wants you to do.

Tell the truth, especially when it comes to Jesus!  He is the truth!  It is all about him and faith in him!  Always tell the truth about the life and salvation of Jesus the Christ so that all may know of his love.

Prayer: Lord God, help me to tell the truth, especially when it comes to your Word, Jesus, who is the way, the truth, and the life!  Amen.

DEVOTION:  Psalm 139:1-10 English Standard Version (ESV)

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

139 Lord, you have searched me and known me!
You know when I sit down and when I rise up;
you discern my thoughts from afar.
You search out my path and my lying down
and are acquainted with all my ways.
Even before a word is on my tongue,
behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.
You hem me in, behind and before,
and lay your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;
it is high; I cannot attain it.

Where shall I go from your Spirit?
Or where shall I flee from your presence?
If I ascend to heaven, you are there!
If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!
If I take the wings of the morning
and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
10 even there your hand shall lead me,
and your right hand shall hold me.

The omniscience, omnipresence, and omnipotence of God is beyond understanding.  We just don't get it.  We can hide things from other humans, but we can't hide things from God, and eventually all those things we try to hide will be found out.  God will make them known. The lesson to be learned…. You might as well come clean.  There is no use in holding on to your dirty secrets.  It's liberating, freeing, and cleansing to tell the truth, to confess your sins. To come clean.

It is also good and peace filling to know that even though God is all-everything, he doesn't hold our sins, failures, shortcomings, and just plain awfulness against us.  Instead of pushing us away, keeping us down, or annihilating us, he lifts us up.  He holds us in his right hand.  He covers us with his wings.  He restores us.  He gives us more grace.  When we are weak, He is strong.  When we fail, he succeeds.  When we fall he rises up.  He is our all in all.

All of this is too much for us to comprehend.  It is all way over everyone's heads.  And that is good.  If he wasn't God, he wouldn't have the power to save us.  He wouldn't have the strength to defeat death, the devil, and hell, and he wouldn't have the ability to call you out of darkness and into his marvelous light.  Praise the Lord for his omniscience, omnipresence, and omnipotence!

Lord, thank you for being present wherever I go, having power over me, and knowing everything about me and still loving me and saving me.  Amen. .

Schedule for tomorrow

Alright folks, here's the deal:

It sounds like a short ice storm is almost a certainty for tomorrow around church time. It is supposed to start around 10 or 10:30.  So here's my plan.

1. Saturday, 5pm worship as usual. If you wanna make sure to make it to church, this is your best bet.

2. Sunday, 8:30 worship as usual.

3. Sunday school and adult Bible class at 9:45 is CANCELED.

4. If the storm hasn't started after our early service we'll work on taking down Christmas decorations.

5. If the storm isn't as bad as they have predicted and there is no ice, we'll have 11am service. If it is, we'll cancel it at that time.

DEVOTION: Matthew 2:1-12  English Standard Version (ESV)

The Visit of the Wise Men

Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men[a] from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, "Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose[b] and have come to worship him." When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. They told him, "In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet:

"'And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
    are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for from you shall come a ruler
who will shepherd my people Israel.'"

Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, "Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him." After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. 11 And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. 12 And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.

We sure do want to add a lot more to this story don't we?  There was even a cute animated movie about it this past year called "The Star".  We want to give names and faces to these wise men.  We want to have a certain number of them (most say there was three although I think there were many more than that. We want to fill in the details.

Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, Matthew doesn't do that.  Instead, he does what he is supposed to do.  He keeps the focus and detail on the important person in the story, namely JESUS.  The story isn't about how far these magi traveled, how many there were, what they were wearing, how long they were searching.  It is all about the King of the Jews!  It's all about Jesus!

We want the same thing in our lives.  We want God to fill in all the details.  We want to have it all figured out.  We want to be in charge and put the emphasis and the story on ourselves.  Yet, through our troubles and struggles, our failures and missteps, God reminds us that He is the only one in charge and he is the only one with the full and complete story.  We simply need to trust in him, like a little child simply trust in his mom and dad to care for him and keep him safe.

I love this story of the magi, because it tells us simply that he is King, and it shows the whole world, and even a star, testifying plainly and clearly to is.  I look forward to the day when we will all see Jesus for who he really is, face to face, without a veil or a mystery but fully revealed.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for revealing who you are through these magi.  Help me to keep my focus on you and to leave the details up to you so that I may live free.  Amen.

DUE TO SOME TROUBLES WITH OUR CHURCH EMAIL ADDRESS WE HAVE HAD TO GET A NEW ONE

Our new email address is sjwarrlutheran@gmail.com.  Please change it in your address books!!

Pastor's email, revklaus@hotmail.com will remain the same.

BIBLE STUDY TASK FORCE FORMING!!  PLEASE READ AND REPLY!!

It has been established by many different sources that one of the main signs of a "healthy" church is how many people are in the Bible on a regular basis.  The more people are in the Scriptures, the healthier (content, active, growing) the congregation.  Also, it has been noted that we can study and have our devotions at home or at work alone, but fellowship and the study of Scripture together as brothers and sisters in Christ is essential.

With this in mind, I would like to get two or three people together who are interested in helping me establish a Bible study curriculum for the congregation for 2018.  Goals are the following:

  1. Create a list of studies of all different kinds that will fit all levels of learning and Bible knowledge (Beginner to advanced) and narrow down the list to the best for this particular time and place.  Topics could range from a particular book of the Bible (Proverbs), to a theme in the Bible (Grace), to a more topical study (What does God's Word have to say about financial management), to a Bible study based on the events of the week (prayer and service).

  1. Get 40% or more of the congregation to attend at least one Bible study a week. Right now we are between 10 and 15% during any given week.

  1. Come up with a schedule of days and times that are convenient for everyone.  Right now the only day we have Bible study is Sunday morning and one that meets on the third Friday evening of each month at the Hendershot's house.  It would be beneficial to make at least one study available on several days throughout the week.

  1. Identify people who would be willing and able to lead/facilitate these group. Pastor would not be able to lead them all.  Please note that leading/facilitating doesn't necessarily mean teaching.  Many who are leaders of a study are learning right along with the rest of the group.

Please reply to let me know if you are interested in working on this!
