Weight Loss Confession Time

Confession Time: This is mostly for my benefit to keep me accountable.

The last time I really weighed myself was the Friday before Thanksgiving, November 17. On that day, I weighed right at 300lbs. I started at 340, so I had lost 40lbs by that date. I got tired of weighing myself, because I was getting frustrated with it. Anyway, I weighed myself for the first time since then today, and I have gained 7 lbs. Needless to say I was quite ticked and disappointed in myself. Only 33 lbs lost over all is very disappointing and frustrating to say the least.

I only have myself to blame. I have been exercising like a mad man. Anyone who's been at the gym can attest to that along with my family, but I've also been eating like a mad man. I haven't been keeping track of what I put in my mouth, and my biggest downfall is eating after supper. I thought my very tough exercise routine would counteract it, but it hasn't.

Anyway, here's the deal folks. I'm still striving to be down 50lbs. by the end of the year. But I need your help.
1. Pray for me, especially pray that I stay away from food and temptation to eat at night.
2. If you see me with food in my hand anywhere besides a regular meal slap it out of my hand or me upside the head. That'll get my attention.
3. Keep me accountable when you see me or talk to me. I need constant accountability.

My goal weight is still 240 and I'm bound and determined to make it.

Here's the promises I'm making today.
1. I'm going to keep a food journal, writing down everything I eat.
2. I will stay under 2000 calories every day.
3. I will not eat after supper.

If you pledged money to support my causes, you can give whatever you see fit, whenever you see fit. But please know that I will do everything I can to get down the 100lbs by Easter, April 1, 2018 so help me God!

Thanks for reading all the way to the end! Jesus loves you and so do I!

DEVOTION: Mark 1:1-8  English Standard Version (ESV)

John the Baptist Prepares the Way

The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.[a]

As it is written in Isaiah the prophet,[b]

"Behold, I send my messenger before your face,
    who will prepare your way,
the voice of one crying in the wilderness:
'Prepare[c] the way of the Lord,
    make his paths straight,'"

John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel's hair and wore a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey. And he preached, saying, "After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."

John the Baptist is a strange and mysterious character.  We just learned about his miraculous birth to two people, Zechariah and Elizabeth, who were about three times the age of childbearing.  We know how he lived out in the wilderness, ate locusts and wild honey, and wore camel's hair with a leather belt around his waist.  He preached repentance for the forgiveness of sins.  What's the deal with John the Baptist?  Why is he so strange, and why is he even there?

While so much about him remains a mystery, one thing we do know is that he was filled with the Holy Spirit from being in his mother's womb.  When someone is filled with the Holy Spirit, he cannot help but proclaim what the Holy Spirit has for him to proclaim.  He will proclaim God's Word and God's Word will work through him.

It shouldn't surprise us that so many people, the whole city in fact, went out to listen and to be baptized by him.  That's what happens.  The Word works through regular, albeit odd in the case of John the Baptist, people who have the Holy Spirit in them.  His Word has power to do great things including bring people to repentance and faith.

This should be an encouragement and relief to you.  If God's Word can do the work it did through a strange man like John, imagine what it can do through a "normal" person like you.  Haha.  You aren't normal and neither am I.  I encourage you to be a vessel of the Gospel!  Share the good news of the birth of Jesus this Advent and Christmas season!  Share God's Word and the Holy Spirit will do His work through you!

Prayer: Holy Spirit, thank you for working in me, through me, and sometimes even in spite of me.  Amen.

VOTER'S MEETING RESULTS FROM LAST SUNDAY

  1. The voters nominated President Lee Hagan for district president and VP Ron Rall for another term.
  2. The voters voted to keep the same mission project, Rev.. Micah and Dorothy Glenn in North County, for 2018.
  3. Larry Schulze, Jim McRae, and Teresa Brockfeld all volunteered to be on the board of trustees!  Thank you to these three volunteers!

  5. The voters approved the budget for 2018.  Thanks to Alan Hofeldt for putting it together.
  6. Since we continuously have trouble filling our boards and committees and since things could be done a whole lot better and more efficiently with a different structure, the voters approved the appointing of a task force to study changes to our governance structure so that we can tap into all the unused potential, so that people who want to do good in the congregation don't have to commit to boards and committees for 9 years, and so that the work of the church can be disbursed among those who actually want to do it!  PRAISE THE LORD!!
  7. The voters approved changing the overflow accordion door to a permanent wall with doors and windows in it to convert the overflow to a cry room.
  8. The voter's also approved a budget of $450,000 for our building project so that we can move forward with hiring an architect.

As you can see, a lot is getting done in and around St. John's.  It may be slow going at times, but God is definitely moving!  I'm excited to see what God has in store for 2018!!  It's gonna be a great year watching A LOT of people come to Christ and become members of St. John's!  If you'd like to volunteer for our task force to look into structure changes, please reply to this email.  Please look for lots of wonderful stuff to be happening in the near future, and PRAY, PRAY, PRAY for St. John's that we can grow in making disciples in, out and together!!

DEVOTION:  2 Peter 3:8-14  English Standard Version (ESV)

But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you,[a] not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies[b] will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.[c]

11 Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, 12 waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn! 13 But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.

Final Words

14 Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace.

I've often referred to this passage when I get a little perturbed at Jesus for not coming back yet. I want him to come back soon and now, but I also realize that God is not bound by time or space, and that my time is but a moment in God's eyes.  Who am I to presume upon God that he should do what I think and ask?  He'll come when we're ready and when he wants.

The other thing is that he is waiting for the total number of people wo will come to repentance and believe to do it.  As far as I can tell, there are still A LOT of people who need to come to repentance.  Millions and Billions of people living on the earth right now need to come to repentance and believe!  Jesus isn't coming back until that happens.

Is it clear enough for you yet?  Do you want Jesus to come back?  Then do what he has called you to do!  Go and make disciples!  Invite people to worship.  Tonight is the perfect night for that! Invite them to supper at 5:30 and worship at 6:30!  GO to your neighbors and ask them if they go to church.  If they don't, invite them to yours!  Go to those who have sinned against you and offer them your forgiveness!  Go to those against whom you have sinned and ask for forgiveness!  Repent and live in repentance!  "Be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace!

Prayer:  Lord, help me to be another John the Baptist here in my own little world today and call people to repentance and faith in you and your love.  Amen.

FW: NEWS RELEASE: Flu season hitting hard in Missouri

I guess we'll have to refrain from shaking hands even earlier this year.  Fist bumps it is.  Also, cover your mouth and nose when you cough and sneeze, and stay home if you're sick!

Flu season hitting hard in Missouri

JEFFERSON CITY, MO – The 2017-2018 flu season is off to an early start in Missouri. As of November 25, 2017, there were 1,545 cases of the flu reported to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, compared to 379 cases reported at the same time last year.

These numbers could indicate that flu season is coming early to the Show-Me State or that it will be particularly severe—as was seen in the southern hemisphere where flu season precedes ours. For 2016-2017, there were more than 70,000 confirmed influenza cases in Missouri. If these trends continue, the state could see even more during the 2017-2018 season.

"We know that historically, the intensity or prevalence of flu can vary from year to year. But this year, all indications are that we are seeing more flu earlier in the year and we anticipate more cases," said Dr. Randall Williams, director of the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. "Now is the time to get your flu shot if you haven't already. The flu shot combined with proper handwashing are the two most effective things you can do to protect yourself and your loved ones this holiday season."

Flu facts:

How big is the problem?
Flu spreads every year, but the timing and severity of flu season is unpredictable. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that flu results in between 9.2 million and 35.6 million illnesses, between 140,000 and 710,000 hospitalizations, and between 12,000 and 56,000 deaths annually in the U.S.

What does flu illness look like?  The most common symptoms of flu include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, and muscle or body aches. Flu viruses spread by tiny droplets when a person with flu coughs, sneezes, or talks. It's important to remember that certain people are at high risk of developing serious flu-related complications, like pneumonia or bronchitis, if they get sick.  Some of these complications are very serious and can lead to death.  Those at high risk for flu-related complications include people age 65 years and older, people with certain chronic medical conditions (such as asthma, diabetes or heart disease), pregnant women and young children.

What can you do to protect family and friends?  A flu vaccine is the best form of defense to protect yourself and your loved ones this winter. It takes about two weeks for the vaccine to reach its full protective abilities. Now is the time to get vaccinated so you can protect yourself and loved ones ahead of the upcoming holidays. In addition to getting your flu shot, take these steps to prevent the spread of flu:

  • Avoid close contact with sick people.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after touching shared objects or surfaces such as door knobs, light switches, remote controls, shopping counters, debit card readers, etc.  If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
  • Clean and disinfect commonly touched surfaces.
  • Stay home while you're sick and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.

It is easy for flu viruses to spread as you travel during the holidays and get together with friends and family.  People with flu can pass the virus on to others a day before feeling sick and sometimes for about a week after feeling better, so it's important to use these steps throughout the flu season.
