DEVOTION:  Matthew 14:22-33

Jesus Walks on the Water

22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone, 24 and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.

25 Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake.26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. "It's a ghost," they said, and cried out in fear.

27 But Jesus immediately said to them: "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid."

28 "Lord, if it's you," Peter replied, "tell me to come to you on the water."

29 "Come," he said.

Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, "Lord, save me!"

31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. "You of little faith," he said, "why did you doubt?"

32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God."

This is one of those great Sunday school stories that if you went to Sunday school, or Lutheran grade school, for any length of time you probably read it and learned it.  It's a great story for so many reasons.

      The biggest one for me is that it shows the ultimate power of God (Jesus) over the most basic of elements as well as His control over the whole universe, versus our lack of power and control over anything.

       How many times in your life have you questioned God, whether he was real or not, what he was doing, how he was doing it, when he was doing it, why he wasn't doing more, etc.?  There is so much that scientists can't even begin to understand about this world, and yet we would trust them blindly just because they're scientists and they know more than we do about some things.  All of them are mere humans who just went to school a bit longer than us for something different than we did.

     God, on the other hand, created the universe, and he created those scientists, even the ones that disagree with him or don't believe in him.  The same Jesus who walked on the water, told the waves to be still, and fed 5,000 men besides women and children, created the universe.  He created the wheat from which the bread came, he created the fish the water it swims in.

       Maybe it's time that you gave God a bit more credit over your life.  Maybe it's time that you surrendered your will to God's will and left your mind and heart up to him.  Maybe it's time that you rested in God's grace and let him work out your life instead of trying to manipulate everything and work it all out for your good.

       Have peace today that the story of Jesus walking on water is a real and true story, and that the same God who can do that is Lord of your life and your Savior and Redeemer!

Prayer: Lord thank you for showing me your power, mercy, and grace through pages and stories of Scripture.  Help me to surrender to you and rest in your arms today.  Amen.

DEVOTION:  Romans 10:5-17English Standard Version (ESV)

The Message of Salvation to All

For Moses writes about the righteousness that is based on the law, that the person who does the commandments shall live by them. But the righteousness based on faith says, "Do not say in your heart, 'Who will ascend into heaven?'" (that is, to bring Christ down) "or 'Who will descend into the abyss?'" (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead).But what does it say? "The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart" (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. 11 For the Scripture says, "Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame." 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. 13 For "everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."

14 How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard?[a] And how are they to hear without someone preaching? 15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!" 16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, "Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?" 17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

A stronger faith doesn't, or for that matter faith at all, doesn't come from ascending to heaven.  You can't work your way to a greater faith.  It's not the same as what eating right and exercising does for your body.  You can't do ore good stuff and expect to have a stronger faith.

Faith, and stronger faith, comes by HEARING THE WORD OF CHRIST!  The more you hear it, the more you read it, the more you live in it, the stronger your faith will be.

And that Word will cause you to do certain things.  It will cause you to fall to your knees and repent.  Just like it did when the Israelites heard it after being away from it for 70 years in Babylon.  Just like the person who doesn't know that their sexual sin is truly sin until they read the Scriptures that call it what it is.  Just like the pastor who hasn't been sharing the good news like he should, and cries out to God for mercy.

Then it causes us to hear that good news, that freedom giving, peace giving, joy giving Gospel.  The good news that the Father sent His Son, Jesus to earth to be born of a virgin, suffer, die and rise again all for us, on our behalf.  It causes you to throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles and run the race that is marked out for you which has as its finish line eternal life with Jesus!

Stop thinking that you can go it on your own.  Stop thinking that being a Christian is all about being a "good" person (whatever that means), and following the rules.  Stop thinking that being a Christian means being "religious", whatever that means.

Instead, read the passage above again with the restful good news of Jesus in mind, and then get out into the world and live free!

Lord, thank you for giving me people in my life who loved me enough to share the good news with me and made sure that I confessed with my mouth that your Son is Lord and believed in my heart that God raised Him from the dead.  Amen.

Yesterday's Message

There's a reason that you'll always see you more older folks than anyone else in worship.  They're the wisest.  They know how important and life giving God's Word truly is, and how after running after everything else to find satisfaction and being disappointed, they finally found true, real, and lasting satisfaction in Christ and His Word.  Check out this message today to learn more!  Forward it if you want!

DEVOTION:  Psalm 18:1-9  English Standard Version (ESV)

The Lord Is My Rock and My Fortress

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David, the servant of the Lord, who addressed the words of this song to the Lord on the day when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul. He said:

18 I love you, O Lord, my strength.
The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer,
    my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge,
    my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised,
    and I am saved from my enemies.

The cords of death encompassed me;
    the torrents of destruction assailed me;
the cords of Sheol entangled me;
    the snares of death confronted me.

In my distress I called upon the Lord;
    to my God I cried for help.
From his temple he heard my voice,
    and my cry to him reached his ears.

Can you imagine the folks you once called friends and family, a king who took you in as his own under his own wing, suddenly turning on you and trying to kill you?  Can you imagine a whole army of men going after you to hunt you down to get rid of you, because of a crazy king's rage and jealousy?

Can you imagine the Lord, being on your side and keeping you safe through it all?  Can you imagine the relief you would feel when it was all over and then the thanks and praise you would want to give God for keeping you safe as He did?

That's what you have in this Psalm.  David was anointed to be king when he was a kid.  After that he went as a young man and killed Goliath.  Because of his bravery and valor, King Saul had him live with him as a servant.  David continued to grow in favor and became a great warrior.  He commanded Saul's army and won many battles.  This all became known to the people so that the people praised David more than they praised Saul which made Saul crazy with jealousy.  He went nuts and several times tried to kill David himself.  Prince Jonathan, David's friend and Saul's son, warned David to flee from the land so that he wouldn't be killed.  David spent a long time on the run, and finally was able to come back to Jerusalem when Saul died.

And you think you have it bad….  The Lord cares for us just the same.  He may allow us to go through times of struggle, deep sorrow, and anguish; but these are only to form us and shape us, and to grow us in our relationship with him so that we may look only to him for all our strength and comfort.  Then, when we take our last breath, we will be ready to join him in paradise.  He will use our story of faith, and our very life, to show His power and grace.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for being our mighty fortress, for caring for us through the storms of life, and for preparing us and keeping us for life eternal.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ

How did King Josiah die in battle?

Don Nolte:  Pharoah Neco king of Egypt went up to the king of Assyria to the river Euphrates.  King Josiah went to meet him, and Pharoah Neco killed him at Megiddo, as soon as he saw him. 2 Kings 23:29.

Pat King: The account of his death is found in two books - 2 Kings 23:29 and 2 Chronicles 35:20

He decided to go to war with Neco, the king of Egypt – despite being told by that king the he, Neco, had been commanded by God to fight the war. Anyway, he disguised himself, and during the battle was shot full of arrows by Neco's archers. Which just goes to show, you should pay attention when God speaks.

Rural Small Town Parish Defying The Odds

Immanuel Lutheran Church, Rader, has been around for 146 years, and has had a very eventful and impactful history. Over the years Immanuel has birthed many churches in southwest Missouri, including most of the ones in the Springfield area. The church was once a thriving, growing congregation, however, over the past 40 years it has had its ups and downs. Attendance diminished and the community lost industry, jobs, and residents. Countless vacancy pastors and fill-ins have served the church throughout the past few decades, because it financially struggled to keep a full-time pastor. However, things have started to turn around in the past several years. The church has had a full-time pastor for seven years, and attendance is increasing. Read more . . .

Last year they had 18 participants, 35 different styles and 185 gallons of home brew were consumed. The home brewer sampling form can be downloaded. Please complete and return at your soonest convenience.

On behalf of the 35 member schools serving 9,000 students in the Greater St. Louis area, thank you again for your participation.
