Prayer request from Pat King

Sent via the Samsung Galaxy S®6 active, an AT&T 4G LTE smartphone

I would like to add my 18 year old nephew, Jacob Hammers, to our prayer list. He went into the hospital late Friday night after having 3 grand mal seizures at home. He had another in the ER, then his heart stopped for about 10 seconds. Thanks be to God, he spontaneously cardioverted.  His heart rate remained unstabled that 1st 24 hours – dropping down to the low 40s then bouncing up into tachycardia. Last night his heart rate dropped down to the 30s. Since that first arrest in the ER, he's had at least 2 others.

He has been moved to Mo. Baptist in St. Louis County.

I am guessing his sinus node is not firing, causing his heart to fail to beat. And, after just talking to my niece Jenny – his mom – the docs at Mo Bapt. tend to agree. Whether it is just a cardiovascular issue – or a neurological one, with the brain failing to send the proper message to the heart – they are currently uncertain. Either way, it is serious.
Since this is a potentially life-threatening situation, we would really appreciate some prayers. He is only alive right now, through Divine intervention.

DEVOTION:  Matthew 13:44-52

44 "The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.

45 "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, 46 who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it.

47 "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was thrown into the sea and gathered fish of every kind. 48 When it was full, men drew it ashore and sat down and sorted the good into containers but threw away the bad. 49 So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come out and separate the evil from the righteous 50 and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

51 "Have you understood all these things?" They said to him, "Yes."52 And he said to them, "Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house, who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old."

Jesus is throwing all kinds of comparisons at us today in this reading.  He wants to help us understand what the kingdom of heaven is like.  He wants to, but our brains are so corrupted by the ways and means of the world that it all goes over our heads.

Some say that it means that the man and the merchant are both God and that he gave up everything (His own beloved Son) to purchase us.

Others say, that the merchant and the man are both us. When we receive the good news, ie. the field and the pearl, we will give up everything, even our very lives, to attain it.

Then we have another judgment parable.  This simply reminds us that there will be a judgment at the end of this world and those who are good fish will be kept forever with Jesus.

At the end Jesus says something that is really hard to understand.  Most scholars believe that the "treasure" Jesus refers to is the Word of God.  The "old" is the Old Testament and the "new" is the New Testament which many of his disciples would alter record.

So much stuff to digest and we've only cracked the surface.  God's Word is full and we'll never understand it all.  He who has ears……

Let us pray: Holy Spirit, open my ears, my mind, and my heart to better understand your Word more and more each day.  Amen.

SEE YOU SUNDAY!

DEVOTION:  Romans 8:28-39English Standard Version (ESV)

28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good,[a] for those who are called according to his purpose. 29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. 30 And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.

God's Everlasting Love

31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be[b] against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?33 Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.[c] 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36 As it is written,

"For your sake we are being killed all the day long;
we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered."

37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

I know of no other section of Scripture that is quoted to help people who are struggling than these verses.  I'm sure a lot of you have a piece of wall art, a plaque, at t-shirt, or a picture that has at least one quote from these verses.  There are tons of wonderful and helpful words of encouragement in these verses.  I've probably used it more than any other section when it comes to encouraging people who are struggling with any number of issues.

You should memorize this whole section of Scripture so that when you are feeling down, when you are discouraged by the way things are goin in your life or in the world, or when you just need to be reminded of God's power, might, and love you can easily call these verses to mind.

He is on our side!  He is FOR US!  Nothing can separate us from His love!  He is going to work everything out for our good!  He is the one who is judge, jury, executioner, lawyer, and advocate and he is FOR US!

Take these words to heart today!  Live in them!  Keep them as your motto, your battle cry, and your constant reminders!

Prayer: Lord, thank you for being on my side, being FOR ME, and for working it all out.  Amen.

DEVOTION:  Deuteronomy 7:6-9  English Standard Version (ESV)

"For you are a people holy to the Lord your God. The Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth. It was not because you were more in number than any other people that the Lord set his love on you and chose you, for you were the fewest of all peoples, but it is because the Lord loves you and is keeping the oath that he swore to your fathers, that the Lord has brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt. Know therefore that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations,

The only reason God has mercy on us is because he loves us.  It is NOT because of any merit or worthiness in me.  It is NOT because I go to church.  It is NOT because I dedicated my life to Christ.  It is NOT because I am a good person.  It is NOT because I have it all together.

It is only because He chose to love me and have mercy on me.  He sent His Son to die for me, before I was even a person on this earth.  Jesus chose to suffer and die even before I took my first breath. "IT IS BECAUSE GOD LOVES YOU AND IS KEEPING THE OATH HE SWORE TO YOUR FATHERS."

So whatever you're going through today, whatever guilt is keeping you from a right relationship with Jesus, whatever pain you may have caused, whatever tough circumstances you may be dealing with, know that the Almighty, omniscient, omnipresent, omnipotent Lord of all creation loves little, insignificant you!

Prayer: Lord, thank you for loving me so much that you died for me, even though I don't deserve it.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ :

Why is Jeremiah called the "weeping prophet"?

Great answer Don!  Thanks!

His calling was to warn and prophesy the to the people of Judah hammering them with prophesy after prophesy only to be rebuked.  The land was full of vice and idolatry.  The people slew the prophets and would have vices and idolatry go unrebuked.  He foretold of the punishment that was at hand, the destruction of Jerusalem and the 70 year Babylonian captivity.  This wore on him as they would not listen to his warnings.  For over forty years, down to the captivity, he had to say hard things to obstinately wicked people. He had to look on while the people grew from bad to worse, always wanting to kill him, and putting him to much hardship. He had to look o with his own eyes how the land was destroyed and the people carried away captive, amid great misery and bloodshed.  Afterward he had to preach and suffer in Egypt, for it is believed that he was stoned to death by the Jews in Egypt.  I'd cry too.

DEVOTION: Psalm 125

The Lord Surrounds His People

A Song of Ascents.

125 Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion,
which cannot be moved, but abides forever.
As the mountains surround Jerusalem,
so the Lord surrounds his people,
from this time forth and forevermore.
For the scepter of wickedness shall not rest
on the land allotted to the righteous,
lest the righteous stretch out
    their hands to do wrong.
Do good, O Lord, to those who are good,
and to those who are upright in their hearts!
But those who turn aside to their crooked ways
the Lord will lead away with evildoers!
    Peace be upon Israel!

Every day I try to be strong.  I work out my body.  I try to be tough.  I don't let the stuff of this world effect me too much.  At least I don't think I do.  I think that I have it all pretty well together.  Or do I?

Really, in and of myself, I am very weak.  One thing going askew in my day can throw off my whole day.  An illness could knock me down at any moment.  Something happening to someone in my family would ruin me if it were only up to me.  I am weak in and of myself.

Yet, I am strong because the Lord surrounds me.  He is the barrier between the devil and me.  The devil will shoot little arrows that may cause pain from time to time, but the mortal wound will never come.  He will try to get to me, but as long as I remain in and trust in the Lord, he can't and won't.

It is in that truth that we put our daily trust.  The Lord is with us.  The God of Jacob is our fortress.  He surrounds us with His might, love, forgiveness, and peace so that we can live our lives free from the worry and doubt that still plagues unbelievers.  Have peace in that truth today!

Prayer: Lord, thank you for constantly surrounding me with your love and mighty strength, for defeating the devil and keeping him away until the day of eternal life.  Amen.

YESTERDAY'S QUIZ :

In your own words, what does it mean when Isaiah says "I delight greatly in the Lord"?  What does it mean to "delight" in the Lord?

From Don Nolte:  Delight means great joy.  He took great joy in the fact that he had a God who was his salvation.  One he could worship and follow.  The same is our great delight to worship in God's house to praise Him for all the wonderful things He has done for us.
